Name: Cave Johnson
Age: Unknown
Gender: Genderless, but has a masculine voice and is referred to with masculine pronouns.
Species: Organic Intelligence, contained within an Aperture Science Personality Construct
Personality: Like GLaDOS, the process of being dumped into a computer drove him farther into insanity than he already was. Also like GLaDOS, the process increased his already considerable intellect, though his intellect is still not really in knowing how the "science stuff" works, but in how to run a business and compete. He sometimes has flashbacks in which he thinks he's still in his original body, though these are fairly rare. You'll know it if he's in one when he starts making prerecorded messages identical to the ones found in Portal 2. He sometimes skips a bit in dialogue, mainly because of his heavily fragmented personality. The technology of extracting consciousness from a dead body wasn't perfected when they performed it on Cave's body, and the results show. He's more insane, more unpredictable, and has become sadistic, which is a quality not really found in life. Unlike GLaDOS, he was not programmed with the need to test because of how much Cave enjoyed testing people in life, so he does it without having to have a protocol in the background that makes him feel good while testing. However, unlike in life, his tests became dangerous and prone to killing test subjects. He doesn't care about death. If he loses a test subject, he doesn't care. He'll just replace the test subject and continue testing as though nobody died. As such, his tests are much more difficult than the ones GLaDOS created, since GLaDOS had a protocol preventing her from killing test subjects in the background.
History: Cave Johnson, as we all know, is the founder of Aperture Science Innovators. He founded Aperture in the 60's, initially making shower curtains. Eventually, they started doing scientific research and came close to beating Black Mesa in technological advancement. The only reason Aperture fell behind is because Black Mesa used dark matter and dark energy to advance their technology. By the time Aperture had nearly caught up with Black Mesa, Cave was already deceased. By then, Aperture had perfected the technology to extract a consciousness from the human brain and had dumped Caroline Johnson, Cave's wife, into a computer. Caroline had become the first incarnation of the Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System, or GLaDOS. This proved to be a disaster, because Caroline resisted. This caused a fluke in the process of transferring her consciousness into a computer, making her an insane, sadistic supercomputer. But she was the first computer with true intelligence instead of the artificial intelligence that the personality cores had, though she thought she had artificial intelligence. GLaDOS tried to kill the entire Aperture staff, and they managed to survive by planting a Morality Core on her. This removed all desire for her to kill. All was well for a while. Then Chell was released from her relaxation vault and GLaDOS was killed.
During the lull where GLaDOS was restricted by the morality core, Aperture began work on consciousness extraction once more. They decided that they should find a way to do a data recovery of sorts and extract the consciousness from a corpse, allowing great minds of history to be brought back in the form of a computer. The method would end up bringing Aperture flying past Black Mesa to the top. Work began in earnest, and after a few years, they had an idea of how to do it. Instead of using the brain itself, they extract their personality from the DNA found on the corpse, which, just as it can be used for cloning, could hold the key to a person's personality. However, the method was, by its very nature, flawed. Personalities are shaped by experiences, making a person completely unique. The first attempt to return Cave Johnson to life ended up with an infantile personality; a baby Cave, in other words. Attempts to correct this were not quite successful. Each attempt resulted in a fragmented personality, with bits and pieces of the original. The project was then abandoned with little hope of success.
The project was not completely abandoned, though. A small team of scientists continued work in the concept, using their own salaries to fund the project. Work was slow due to deficient funding, but they eventually found a way to get the personality to at least resemble the original. It required the brain, however, which was a problem for those long-dead individuals who came before cryogenic storage of cadavers (Cave had made it very clear that he wanted his body donated to the science he loved more than anything (except Caroline, that is)). They immediately shared the method, and Aperture immediately began construction of the housing for the consciousness. After a month of work in the matter, the housing for Cave's consciousness was complete, and he was dumped into it. Thus, GLaDOS 2.0 was created and put in charge of the facility, with GLaDOS assisting him boredly.
It proved to be a disaster. The transfer into the housing corrupted the consciousness, warping the personality to a sick and twisted version of Cave. Every test Cave made killed dozens of test subjects, and those who survived each one were killed in the next more often than not. Those who survived them all, Cave personally killed. It was as though he just didn't care anymore, which was unlike Cave. Aperture was forced to plant a Morality Core on him, but Cave's will was much stronger than Caroline's. He managed to resist the effects of the Morality Core and keep killing test subjects. Thus, Aperture was forced to take drastic measures. They poured much of their resources into creating a much stronger core, and produced the Dormancy Core, an amplified version of the Morality Core. They lost several employees in Cave's resistance to the core being planted on him, but they managed to do it. Cave was down, in a state similar to deactivation.
Eventually, Wheatley accidentally disabled the Dormancy Core while awakening a group of test subjects, causing Cave to reactivate.
