Early Adult - Equivalent to early 30's
6' 4" (193cm)
Long, slender, and elegant. His body is a myriad of lustrous black, midnight blue, and highlighted white feathers. In regards to others of his ilk, he seems frail, but his posture commands a sense of hidden strength and athleticism.
Lustrous midnight blue to sky blue gradient feathers in a triad of crests. The main crest and secondary crests are slicked back to give a false appearance of slicked back hair. Based on emotional state or conscious effort, the crests can erect at a rough 45 degree angle with a slight outward curve. Near the sides of the "face", thin lines of small, white feathers trace from the connection of the crest and temple to the lower jaw.
Foreign garbs unusual to the typical Averian dress, he wears clothes akin to Japanese Edo Era. His pants are charcoal grey hakama, allowing for full mobility. The fabric in the back has been modified to allow comfortable wear around his tail-feathers. On his upper body he wears a dark blue Jinbei with the shoulders hemmed off. This lack of sleeves allow for his mid-thigh length arm-feathers to move freely and comfortably.
Although a dead-shot with a bow, he does not actively carry one. He prefers his aptitude with magic combined with martial arts. He wears customized gauntlets to each side, used to maximize his hand to hand abilities and allow for more aggressive attacks as opposed to bare talons. He also regards these weapons as tools of research for their ability to increase his control of magical energies in field studies.
As a man/bird of science, he carries a shoulder-sling bag made of the same material as his clothes. Within such are multiple objects, tools, scrolls, and writing materials to facilitate spontaneous field research. He is also exceptionally farsighted, requiring the use of special glasses to see close.
Talents, Abilities and Spell Aptitude
His father being a master bow craftsman for the Raptorial gaurd, trained Tobias in the art of archery. Tobias did not favor the use of the weapon, but demonstrated an exceptional marksmanship at long distance, precision shots. He was thoroughly trained and tested until he became fascinated with the magical arts. His father forced a strict, daily archery regimen up until the day of his exile. Tobias devoted his later years to the study of magic, meditation, and grew more fond of the art of hand to hand combat. However, he maintains a hidden talent with the arrow.
A talent passed down to him as a son of a master fletcher. Tobias has intermediate knowledge of bows, arrows, fletching, and quality of materials used to craft such weapons. Able to perform an array of field repairs with the proper equipment, Tobias possesses the aptitude to survive on his skills as a craftsman alone. He has not yet found or made a bow to his level of standards for which he would be willing to carry and call his own. Although talented and knowledgeable, he harbors little interest in archery and the arts associated.
No stone, pebble or feather goes unturned in this Averian's mind. He is utterly obsessed with the study of existence and the role magic plays in it. Through years of observation, unorthodox experiments, and research, Tobias believes he is on the brink of understanding why certain people poses varying degrees of magical aptitude. He even has strong theories relating to the phenomena of portals and the abyss. With such an array of mental resources and curiosity, Tobias possesses an uncommon ability to rapidly assess and fabricate alternate approaches to complicated situations and problems. Many call him unorthodox, even mad, but there are few who regard him as brilliant.
Through years of research, Tobias has accumulated, modified, and practiced varying forms of martial arts. Although not a master in the field, Tobias has been known to instigate duels with various adventurers to practice and apply new methods of engagement. Gifted with the talons of the Averian race, Tobias has been successful in developing several solid techniques for defense and offense. Because of his relation with the Ambassador and fellow craftsman in Nexulai, Tobias has acquired and learned to use custom gauntlets to bolster his defense and offensive capabilities. Sparring matches with member of the guard have prepared him and his unique weapons for engagements involving varying forms of opposing weaponry. Unfortunately, Tobias seeks mastery of the martial arts simply out of obligation to his own well being and will avoid physical confrontation at all costs.
In his quest for truth in the origin of life, magic, and the portals, Tobias has made headway into learning his own innate ability to manipulate magical energy. Although not explicitly proficient in any one art, Tobias harbors a general understanding and skill in all branches of magic. Typically used for daily tasks and assistance in labs experiments, Tobias has also played with the use of magic as a supplement to both archery and his martial arts. Although unable to practically test their effectiveness in sparing matches, he yearns to test his findings and hypotheses in an actual combat situations.
His father, Azurius Fletcherson, was a master fletcher and craftsman for the Averian Archery Batallion. His bows were of some of the finest supplied to the Averian Guard. Azurias was also one of the few purebred Azure Jay descendants left within the Corvidan Tribe. His mother was member of the medical research division and often oversaw the wounded guardsmen who were careless in their training. She was a beautiful Starlette Magpie, sharp-minded as she was striking. The two met whilst in the barraks and, although rough in the beginning, developed a uniquely strong love for one another. In but a few years, the two decided to settle down in the merchant district of the Averian homeland. Azurias and his new wife, Isabelle Fletcherson, comfortably survived selling items and skills of their respective trades. I was not long after, that Isabelle became pregnant.
Tobias came into the world during a time where the ripples of war still lingered on the faces of his kin. As he grew, his young, impressionable eyes experienced the plethora of stories and imagery of a recovering people. His father, seeking to continue the family business through his child, began teaching Tobias the ways of the bow at an early age. The young featherling was reluctant to learn the ways war, already exposed to stories of suffering it could cause. The young mind spent more interest in the teachings of his mother, learning the ways of science and medicine. Through this, Tobias grew a great appreciation for life and a hunger for knowledge.
As Tobias grew older, he took great pride in his prowess and exceptional learning ability. His father, strict and determined in his ways, forced Tobias to learn everything he had to teach about his craft. Although clearly disinterested, Tobias could not help but to learn what he could for the sake of learning. Personally unable to settle for less than standard, Tobias demonstrated exceptional knowledge retention, discipline, and mastery of what his father had to teach. His mother and he grew a much stronger bond in their time together. Always more compassionate than his father, Isabelle met little resistance getting Tobias to learn the methods of her trade. So successful in her endeavors, that Tobias quickly began adopting and inquiring new methods of thought and healing. It was through his inquisitive nature that he began to research and learn more about life, medicine, and alternate practices. Around this same time, his kin made a push of increased efforts into understanding the 100 year old portals and the phenomena of magic. Tobias took to these new developments like a moth to a flame and quickly obsessed himself in newly discovered light magics.
In his later years, Tobias created connections between the portals, magical abilities, and theorizing their involvement with life as he knew it. His general curiosity caught the eye of Corvidan researchers who offered him a position on their team in the study of magics. The goal of these researchers was to breakdown the science of magic to discover a use to allow sustained flight back to the Averian race. Initially interested in the same goal, Tobias obsessed himself in research at the sacrifice of relations with his family and others. His findings help give direction to his fellow Corvidan, until some of his experiments became unusual to the norm. Without proper authority, he began experimenting with living creatures and their reactions to magical energies. Unfortunately, some subjects were lost in the research which created unrest with his fellow scientists. It wasn't long before he was kicked from the research department, forced out of his element to a world he had largely ignored.
Unable to access tools and means to continue his obsession, Tobias spent months frustrated with no outlet for his growing madness. One day, his mother came to him and offered to teach him an ancient Averian art used to calm the mind and release stress form the body. This art was similar to hand to hand combat but involved slow, fluid movements of the hands and feet. Tobias was surprised at how effective it was at bringing him peace. With an outlet for his frustration, he began to seek new sources of income for his projects. Tobias took to his father's craft, although with distaste, and began to make a living through the craft of the bow. With his earnings, he pursued further knowledge and began to draw a connection between his own mind, body, and these new magic energies. He continued his unorthodox experiments and began to learn a connection between traits of the body and aptitudes for magic. It wasn't long for the word of his findings to whisper into the ears of individuals interested in progressing such findings. Tobias soon found himself in excess of funds from various and mysterious advocates to his cause.
As word began to spread of his private research, so too did the details of his methods. One late evening, a group of unknown Averian forced their way into his home and workshop. They destroyed vital pieces of research, and inflicted the ultimate dishonor upon Tobias. His assailants stripped him not only of his clothes, but plucked him clean of his feathers, tying him to the door of his own home. It was not uncommon for this type of torture to kill its victims through shock, hypothermia, and blood loss. No one came to his aid except for his mother, and not a moment too soon. His father could not bare the dishonor nor disgrace of his own blood bringing such a fate upon himself. Recovery from such trauma was long and painful. The few that have seen such brutality usually suffer disfigurement, or mental repercussions. Though with both his mother's care, and his own knowledge in new medical magics, Tobias was on a promising track for recovery.
During this time, he was visited by a messenger from Nexulai bearing a message. This letter wore the seal of the Grand Ambassador. Within, it spoke of Tobias's research and the Patriarch's desire to see him exiled for his immoral experiments and methods. The Ambassador, Sokolniki, had requested Tobias see him in Nexulai as soon as his condition allowed. The words of this message weighed heavy on his mother's heart and Tobias's mind. Uncertain what his immediate fate would be, they both focused on his recovery. The healing progressed well and resulted in absolutely no disfigurement. In fact, his new plumage grew in with greater luster and color, but he would forever be shamed by the event; he was no longer welcome among his people.
It was a sad day when Tobias said goodbye to his home, and more importantly his mother. She was always there for him, but where he was going, he may never see her. His neighbors saw him off, not with cheers and good wishes, but slander and disdain. He was granted escort by the Ambassador's own men - commonly given to those of high positions... and criminals. The journey by foot was long, but his arrival to Nexulai weighed increasingly heavy in his chest. Stripped of all his belongings, Tobias was granted audience with the Grand Ambassador. His life in shambles, and expecting the worst, Tobias was shocked into silence by Sokolniki's words. Tobias was indeed to be exiled from his hometown, but was to be made the Ambassador's personal emissary of magic. Tobias was flabbergasted to learn that one of his mysterious supporters, prior to his unforgettable injuries, was Sokolniki himself. Seeing promise in Tobias's research, and gambling on his ability to discover a way of sustained flight through magic, Sokolniki offered this honor to Tobias at a cost. From that day forward, he was forbidden to incorporate any innocent life in his experiments, and was to be disciplined heavily in the ways self defense by the masters of the guard. Incapable or willing of conceiving any alternate sentencing, Tobias agreed to these terms.
In the years that followed, Tobias was shaped and molded by many elements within the Portal Hub of Nexulai. A vast pool of knowledge was imparted upon him new tastes in fashion, methods of thinking, and appreciation for life. He was beaten and bruised, but more importantly, trained in the various arts of melee combat. Thusly, he developed a unique knack for hand to hand combat. As ordered by the Ambassador, Tobias studied these sessions as educational opportunities and adapted them to his liking. In the marketplace, for which he was beginning to build a positive reputation with exotic vendors, he commissioned the creation of unique gauntlets. These gauntlets were tailored to improve his natural weapons, talons. Not only would they allow for greater defense and offense, but the artisan he choose for the job was familiar with magical conductivity. Already learning to channel these energies throughout his body, the finished gauntlets allowed greater control of the magical forces. While being trained by body with the guard, he continued to train his mind. Thanks to the direct sponsorship of the Grand Ambassador and access to tools previously unimaginable, Tobias made strong headway in his research. Obsessed with the Abyssal energies and their role in magics, Tobias began hypothesizing methods to which magical inclination could be learned instead of born with. This research could prove vital to awakening a method of sustained flight, but being so close, he was also so far away.
Tobias met many great minds in his research. Notable minds being the Toft Family. Their knowledge and prior research of the rifts proved great help to his own conquests. It was through them, he was able to make the connection that these portals must posses and emit energy conducive to life itself. The walls of the tubes joining worlds could possibly be purified or solidified light magic. Tobias had seen those of the Caelist race show exemplary ability to harness this light magic and produce barriers of similar traits to the tube walls. Tobias also learned with the aid of the Tofts, that the abyssal energy and dark magics are similar in nature. Their properties to damage and alter life seem to share many unique similarities. With permission to join some of there fieldwork, Tobias was able to observe certain individuals, previously unable to bend magic, show small feats of magical inclination as they traveled through these rifts. Still experimenting with his theory, he now believes that magical control can be learned and channeled by anyone. His only available test subject being himself, he has made personal strides in controlling and manipulating magical energy. Currently, these new skills are used to aid in his daily routines, lab-work, and research, but he harbors curiosity to test their implications in a combat setting. Although deeply involved in the Toft research, the same could not be said in reverse. Still somewhat known for his past, many were hesitant to get to close to Tobias and his personal studies.
Although with a past riddled with intense emotion and hardship, Tobias harbors a calm and kind outward demeanor. Since being sculpted by the Ambassador and guard himself, Tobias shares a stronger sense of respect, admiration, resilience, and determination. With his roots being in medicine, Tobias is quick to aid those in need. Some may meet his assistance with rejection due to the rumors surrounding his actions, but he will not hesitate to offer. Tobias shares a great sense of justice, being disciplined by the guard, and upholds law whenever he can. This occasionally causes a conflict of interest due to his craving for knowledge through whatever means. Though sometimes emotionally unstable, Tobias generally carries the same aura, seen with nobility, in his body language. He will always chooses words over war, but has promised himself to never let another humiliate him as he was before. Should he be pressed to defend himself, it is unknown what capabilities he may invoke. Somewhat enigmatic, and complex, Tobias is a generally calm and pleasant member of Nexulain society.
