/origin and backstory/
Rita Farr. Wow! This has been SO challenging. This section has been so fraught with strife, sweat and creative juices unknown that it has taken me this long to assemble this in a way that I feel happy with it, so here it is:
Rita was born in Detroit City in the summer of 1987 to a Flynn and Valerie Farr. Far from the idyllic nuclear family, she was brought up on the road, her parent's splitting, though oddly never divorced, soon after this most flexible of characters turned four. Miraculously, her father in an uncommon move garnered sole custody of the child and they dwelled in his battered upon Volkswagen RV for a time. As a musician by trade, this state of portability was perfect for Flynn, though he sensed that the constants of moving about, packing up and re-rooting could be affecting his young, impressionable charge - she was effectively isolated during some of her formative years from other children her age; any friends she did make would be effectively left behind when they left that particular site. Faced with a quandary, he decided to do right by his child and rented a small apartment for the two of them in Detroit, soon getting her checked into a school and finding little jobs to occupy himself and to pay for their dwelling.
While not intuitively academic, she would always put her first foot forward at school, though it was a disheveled and impotent foot. However, where her bulb remained dim and subdued when studying science or maths, it shone during more active studies. After a workshop presented to her school whilst aged seven, she got it in her head that she would become a well-payed, beautiful actress when she grew up. When she eventually picked up a paint brush later that year, she made the same assumption still, believing that she would become an artist of a kind with a gallery all of her own. However, she felt her fate was decided for her when the school started swimming lessons some time after she had turned eight.
She took to the water as a bird would to the air - during the next twelve or so weeks she would rapidly improve, swapping out her novice status for that of mild, ill-nurtured skill and it would only grow greater. For once she was good at something, better than her peers in many respects. However, as the sessions ended, so did her fifteen seconds. In an uncharacteristic act of charity, her father used a large heap of his savings in paying for her to have extended lessons, disheartened by his daughter's state of mind.
Flash forward to 2002 and at age fifteen, she is a highly valued member of her high school swim-team, sporting a mean doggy-paddle. Whilst still retaining an interest for the arts - whether 'performing' or 'fine' - she would continue unfalteringly to bring her school various trophies and trinkets for her more sporty wares. Swimming had become somewhat of a passion up until that point and her love was only to grow.
It would be prudent to point out here that she had no care for any of the various super heroic deeds, restrictions or back-alley party going ons during these young years, a sentiment carried with her long until her gaining of super powers. None of the acts passed would mean anything to her as they simply didn't apply to her.
It was around this time in her fledgling career that she met Steve Dayton, a boy who, while two years her senior, standing leaps and bounds infront of her intellectually, had held the tact and emotive capability of a specimen a third of his age. The youth had coaxed her into a date following a performance of her's in a school-play rendition of 'A Street Car Named Desire' and managed to charm her, perhaps in part with his strange mental abilities. In Steve Rita found many things: companionship, wisdom and a will to commit, but not love. He was a lustful, boastful little man, but seemingly caring and patient. It was a wonder that Rita had stayed with him for mor than a month, let alone six years. When school finished and funds became available, the two abruptly moved in with each other and while Dayton pursued the academia, Rita continued to train.
It was a shock for her to learn that, upon requesting to be included, she had made the Olympic swimming team in 2008 - she had entered and won competitions and events before this, but never on such a worldwide and crowd-reaching scale. In her eyes, she had finally made it - it didn't matter to her if she got gold or came up with nothing; it was truly an honour. While her father and her friends were more than supporting, it was Dayton's reaction that shocked her the most. Equally impressed, he pushed upon her the importance of the competition and winning. He influenced her greatly, partly with mental suggestion, partly with his unmistakable, newly found gravitas; his efforts began to sink in: she became ever more competitive, practicing harder and working out more, putting a lot of strain upon her body and mind. By the time of her first event, she had been coerced by him to take performance enhancing drugs.
In the beginning, she continued to excel in her performance, much as her younger self had years before. However, upon the day of the second race, her secret affliction was discovered. Charged with doping, she was forced to drop out of the prestigious competition. She could no longer merely leave the house without the media bursting into frenzy. Her father could no longer bear to talk with her, such was the betrayal. In a violent rage, she publicly dumps Dayton before effectively dropping off of the radar.
These events led Rita to wholeheartedly despise Dayton and everything he touched. Finding herself two months into a pregnancy with his(?) child, she had the blight aborted as cost for the memories. It was at this point that she sought the help of a therapist.
In a career resurgence, Farr, in following with her young self's adoration of theatre, attempted to make a new name for herself as an actress. Helped largely by her already infamous name, she scored the role of the leading lass in 2011 feature film "The Terror!" after performing a few other, minor roles. A reboot of the Basil Karlo horror classic, it spring-boarded her somewhat; following this role, she auditioned for another leading role, this time in an action outing called "Chiller". This film is to be filmed in South Africa in early 2013.
Doom Patrol extra notes:
Cliffton Steele was an aspiring race-car driver before, and running up to his accident. As a child he had helped his father fix up his car before him, having later followed his father's footsteps on a grander scale. After a car crash, only his brain was left undo aged.
Larry Trainor was a test pilot for the Air Force and a distant relative of Niles Caulder. Following a bombardment of radiation upon himself, he has been held in a state of quarantine for a number of weeks.
Niles Caulder was an ex-operative of SHADE who grew distasteful of the organisation's beliefs and methods. Despite this, he is willing to perform any task, however dirty, to reach his ends, and he has fingers in more pies than you would care to imagine. He is paralysed from the waist down.
/powers and abilities/
Elasti-Girl, as her name suggests, is an extremely flexible individual. After her aforementioned accident, she gained the ability to change her size. Capable of shrinking down to the size of a molecule or take on gigantic forms precisely and with no apparent harm to her person. In addition, she can accurately increase/decrease the sizes of select parts of her body - this is how she creates the impression of being able to stretch her limbs. Due to her athletic background, she is highly agile and incredibly quick, with extremely fast reaction times to boot. Her fighting style sacrifices skill for force, though she is more likely to attempt to reach peaceful ends to conflicts before fighting should arise as a problem.
Her teammates Robotman and Negative Man are equally strangely powered, though their abilities are seen by both to be more affliction than anything. Clifford Steele, or Robotman as he is known now is solely comprised of a brain housed in a metal shell. While largely protected from many forms of physical attacks, he can be made vulnerable through a small variety of means if the body's integrity is compromised. Due to the hydraulic systems within his body he is able to perform much better than a human body in many ways: he possesses superhuman strength and has an increased jump height and speed. Due to attachments in his armor, he can magnetically attach himself to and scale some metal surfaces. He can heat the outside of the body's plating to very high temperatures.
Larry Trainor is much the same as Robotman in requiring a body-sheathe for protection. However, while Robotman's organics are protected from exterior stimuli, his specially coated bandages protect the rest of the world from himself. His body is highly radioactive, giving out rays largely harmful to humans. The bandages both maintain his corporeal form and prevent any radiation being given off from harming others. He is also able to create dark constructs with a more contained form of this radiation that may pass through the bandages. They usually take the shape of a human body and he is able to transfer his consciousness into them, giving him a semblance of flight and intangibility. The constructs can cause explosions and combustion through phasing through some substances.
(Honourable mention to Dr. Steven Dayton, Dr. Caulder's sometimes lab assistant: he has exhibited certain signs of advanced mental abilities, though these have gone largely unnoticed.)
/how is this character different?/ While the personalities and some abilities of Rita, Larry, Cliff and the Chief may be subject to alteration as I see fit, the main change will be the significance of Steve Dayton, known in the mainstream as Mento. I certainly have differing plans for him.
/what is your goal with this character?/ I hope to be able to show the various rises and falls of a greatly underused superhero group I am presently attempting to familiarise myself with. I will likely start this journey with several origins and see where we go from there. I request that no-one touch Animal-Vegetable-Mineral Man for the foreseeable future.
/sample post – two full paragraphs. dialogue./
The laboratory's sterile light permeated the man's viscous rungs of wrinkle atop his forehead, forcing tiny beads of sweat down and over. Quite a nuisance, one would wonder, to be putting up with but he was far too busy to throw care about at present. He was nearly at his breakthrough point. His eureka moment. Oh, and it would be so beautiful. So very enlightening. As he turns the metallic beast around in his hands, he nearly drops it, the sheer volume of his partner's speech. He jumps upon his seat and looks over, slightly soiled by his own salty dew as the real world hits once more.
"Put that old toy down, Dayton - come watch this."
This red-headed man of the world drew much more inspiration from the world at large than Dayton would ever care to know, but he set many of the bars in genetic study - this earned enough of Steve's respect for him to tolerate his little wild wiles. This interruption however was highly warranted. A weight set in Dr. Dayton's stomach as he viewed the screen. It was fixed upon the news, over the truly shocking news.
"Rita Farr, one-time olympian come actor was reportedly found in a critical state by fellow stars on the film set of "Chiller!" this morning. It is believed that, whilst working in the tropics of Africa, she may have received a bite of some sort from one of the more venomous animals on the continent, though this is merely guess work at the moment. As of yet Farr, previously at the centre of a drugging scandal that ripped at the very heart of professional sport, has not awoken from her slumber and can't impart any further knowledge on the origins of her affliction. It is believed that she will be airlifted to the nearest hospital upon a change in consciousness. From the team at the Seven O'Clock News, we hope you have a quick recovery, Miss! In other, more pressing ne --" The sound of the broadcast fades into non-existence as Dayton finally closes his mouth, too filled with panic to do anything.
"Rita..." He groans, slightly unsure of himself. What was he meant to feel now?
"I thought you would want to see that," Dr. Caulder throws out sharply. "I know you two had some history - I'd place my life on us seeing more of her soon." With that the ulterior being resumes his silent viewing and the sweaty tinkerer is left so very unsure, with the other's self assured knowing.
