I have a few rules in mind but those are the main two.
I. I want activity. Don't make me wait longer than 5 days for a post without a good reason. I'm responsible to keep this alive but I can't keep the interest if someone takes 5 days to respond to another on a regular basis. Saying that, if your character doesn't have ties to another one you can take as long as you want, as long as no one is waiting for your response.
II. I won't move your character along for you. The nature of this RP is not the type "a group of people working together", nor is it a string of short missions (though those will be present). I will appreciate your input in the story - I'm setting the rules but you're writing your own story. Consider it a sandbox if you wish, though there will be an overarching story. I will try to make it as interesting as possible, but for the larger part you'll be an independent writer, unless you start working with other players. Interactions are encouraged but not necessary.
Genre wise this should include: Action, drama, suspense, supernatural, horror and slice of life, with a lot of philosophy and culture aspects.
The story is set in a world inhabited by angels, demons and humans. Originally the 3 layers of the world (Heaven, Surface and Hell) were separated, with the Surface and the humans being a buffer element between angels and demons - a no-man's land inhabited by beings that are just as good, as they are bad.
During a war between the angels and demons Heaven was destroyed and angels populated Surface, making it their ultimate goal to 'protect' (or control?) the humans. Mixing with the humans their offspring were now born mortal, their angelic abilities and memories of past lives only present in their wings.
The angels then specialized in different regions of service for the humans, building their hierarchy and The Council - the ruling force that follows through the education and raising of new angels, making sure they fulfill their duty and punish when needed. The core of the Council are the seven Arc-angels, a few Clairvoyant and some high-ranked Pure or Greys
Angels have a relative freedom of movement and action, as long as they serve the greater good, never put their interests before the humansí and never neglect their duties. Self-sacrifice is often the worst possible crime, because it leaves the angel unable to serve and is hence selfish. The most severe punishment for egoistic actions is an eternal immobility trapped in onyx until the Council decides the powers of the trapped angel is needed and release them.
The only ones who remember the War are a few angels of the Council, some high-class demons in Hell and some high-level angels. In order to keep the low-class angels submissive the Council created the image of demons as vicious monsters, while concealing the truth about the real demons being held in the same respect as angels and being secretly protected on the Surface by them.
Nowadays the young angels are taught to hate and kill any abnormal being they see, resulting in both blind submission to the Council and unwavering belief in their own powers and righteousness. The arrogance that sprouts from that is based on the ignorance of the real demons being at least just as powerful as the angels.
The demons donít follow a strict hierarchy, their abilities and shapes varying greatly. When an angel dies their immortal souls are passed on, but their memories are usually locked away from them, giving the children skill, but no personal experience greater than a lifetime. In comparison a demon has to spend their life in one form and when they have experienced it fully and learned all about it they participate in a ceremony. In that their bodies are cut open to possibly allow for a higher being to rise from the shell, their memories intact. Participating in the ritual is both an honour and a risk because often times the process is rushed by an impatient or greedy demon and the result isnít a metamorphose but death.
The major difference between angels and demons is their perception of growth, development and death. Demons accept death as a necessary evil to evolution and to making their offspring stronger; angels deny and resent it, clinging to the idea of eternal selfless perfection.
The demons populating the Surface are mostly mutated/ infected humans (vampires, werewolves). The real demons, the ones in Hell are usually fairly pacifistic and noble. They vary greatly in shape and size and their social structure is divided in clans and kingdoms. The relationship between them and the Council are complicated, because before the War the interactions were much more intense and the prejudices much less. The angels who remember the war mostly respect them but prefer to keep them at a convenient distance from their new territory.
Humans are the in-between race that could easily be affected by demonic influence (like vampirism or hypnosis), but that is much less familiar to either of the two other races and much more unpredictable. They are considered Godís favourites and as such are a race to fight to obtain. Angelsí attitude towards them is that of a mother and a silly child that needs guidance and protection. Demons, on the other hand, who believe more in individuality, are enchanted by them and want to explore, influence or learn from them.
Yet the battle for dominance isnít over. Demonic infections plague the humans and angels are starting to feel more and more at home in a place where they donít belong. Hellís anger rises at the injustice and Hellís Gate is cracking. The Gatekeeper Ė Melody, the highest demon, needs it fixed but is unable to complete the task. Hellís demons start entering Surface, each with their own agenda.
Hellís gate is cracking and with that Surface is about to be flooded by demons. If that were to happen the Great War will be repeated and the battle for dominance over the humans might well be called Apocalypse.
To prevent that the Council seeks to forge a new Hellís Gate. For that definite line to be drawn between Surface and Hell the Essence of the World needs to be collected Ė the fundamental core of all three races with their similarities and differences.
Meanwhile some demons are out on a quest to gain the Essence for their own purpose Ė to recreate Heavenís Gate and banish the angels back where they came from.
And what about the humans..? Might it be that they're not just simple pawns and have some plans on their own...?
The Angel Hierarchy
(From lower rank to highest, depending on wing-color)
5. Fallen Angels Ė Angels that have fallen from grace, lost their wings and powers and were banished to Surface to live the rest of their lives there.
4. Dark Angels - The children or grandchildren of the Fallen Ones. They bear the sins of their ancestors tainting their wings, struggling to purify them back to white by performing good deeds.
3. Gray angels/ Half angels- humans, that become angels for one reason or another.
2. Pure Angels - The most common, innocent angels with white wings.
1. Archangels- The link between normal angels and God. The Council core. They are everywhere at the same time and usually only materialize for important Council meetings and pass their messages on to Pure angels to execute them.
Types of Angels
Inhabit regions and care for the weather to be the way it should. (Like a Rain Angel watching over England.)
(Have to be emotionless enough to be able to kill by the hundreds, because theyíre a direct link to Nature rather than God and have to be objective. Held with fear and respect and rarely interact with the Council, mostly staying in their region of influence.)
Their wings are tainted by the nature force they are a link to.
Guarding the really fateful/ important humans that are meant to do great deeds.
(Might not like or realize who theyíre assigned to, but are forced to be their shields, taking up all their injuries and possibly death. They might be born connected to a being or be assigned to serve it.)
Exterminate demons and humans if itís necessary. Have great physical power and stamina, almost unlimited uses of their powers and limbs.
(Usually the Clairvoyant dictate upon their deeds.)
ĎTameí demons to work for them and have semi-control over them.
(Can also do that to humans or angels, although itís taboo. They usually hover over the battlefield rather than fight themselves.)
Care, that the humans donít stop believing in God. Theyíre beautiful, majestic and can use all kinds of impressive, show-off magic.
Their wings are usually the most awe-inspiring.
Have visions of the future and use it to advise the Council on their future actions, as well as sometimes assigning Guardians to specific humans. They are very few and very well-protected.
The Archangels, Clairvoyants and some Pures, leading the rest. They take the important decisions, educate the young angels, assign duties to the Darks to give them a chance for salvation and punishes the convicted.
