It's finally happened: Nuclear war. The catalyst? Syria. After President Bashar Al Assad was assassinated by Islamist rebels in the city of Damascus on March 3rd, 2015, the Syrian Arab Republic collapsed. The loyalist army fought to maintain the status quo as Prime Minister Wael Nader al-Halqi stepped in and took over in Assad's place. But it was a losing battle, and by the end of the year it became hard to tell who was really in charge anymore. It wasn't long before the rebels broke into the chemical weapon depots which the government had kept so well protected for so long - much as foreign powers had feared. And suddenly Al Qaeda was back in the headlines around the world - it had long been suspected that they had operatives among the rebels. Now, they were deploying chemical weapons across their effective range.
The United States of America, The Republic of Turkey, and the State of Israel moved in to put down the government forces and islamic rebel elements alike - supporting the allegedly non-sectarian Syrian National Council - a prominent organization that proposes to take over as the new government of Syria.
The People's Republic of China and the Russian Federation responded with sanctions against the United States, as they had long backed the Loyalist factions. They did not necessarily want to become embroiled in a war, however.
To make a very long story short, after two years of escalating tension, The Islamic Republic of Iran launched nuclear warheads in 2018 - annihilating Atioch and dealing critical damage to the infrastructure of the Holy City of Jerusalem.
America, Turkey, and Israel invaded Iran - pulling the region into a messy war. Russia and China both declared war and mobilized to defend Iran...
The result, when all was said and done? It's not longer quite clear who launched the first missile. But in the end Washington D.C, New York, Los Angeles, Moscow, Saint Petersberg, Tehran, Damascus, Aleppo, Beijing, and Hong Kong were all reduced to ash. The world finally saw that compared to modern weaponry, the atom bomb was... a joke. A hand grenade in a garbage pale, in comparison to a modern ICBM.
Now, with the world in mourning, those who watch and wait have found their opportunity to make themselves known. At first, with foreign objects hurtling out of the heavens all across the world... people thought the missiles were coming down again. But these were no explosives - they were shuttles, and each bore deep into the heart of those cities which had been destroyed by nuclear weapons. For thirty days, then... nothing happened! They had burrowed into the earth and lain dormant. It seemed that they soaked up the radioactive elements, because the radiation in affected areas dropped at an alarming rate after they arrived.
Some governments had built up makeshift facilities around them - some kept them under guard. Some tried to dig them up and examine or destroy them - but if ever they got close the machines would only drill deeper. And one at a time... they started to 'wake up'...
The world is a very different place now. Driven by the desperate need to rebuild and heal, more people are opening their eyes and turning to the magic arts which had so long been shunned as superstition - finding new powers there, even if many had to court sinister powers to do it. Strange creatures began to show up, too - more common around the destroyed cities, who did not seem to mind radiation at all. Some say they are aliens - some say they are demons. To others, mutants. These days the activity is most prevalent in the middle east and to folks in Europe, it the headlines seem like something out of a tabloid paper. For many, it's simply too preposterous to believe...
...So basically this is going to be an RP set in the near future in an earth-like setting. I'm not sure about the specific plot yet, but there's the background! This will probably be set in the middle easy, most likely Israel or possibly Syria. I welcome you to bring such elements as historical 'magic' into the game, although I will gladly accept more modern "fantasy" concepts as well. There is certainly an extraterrestrial presence, but the nature of that isn't entirely decided yet. Given that it's only been twenty years, I don't expect any super-advanced sci-fi stuff from earth; but new and plausible technologies are welcome. If you have a good reason you might have acquired technology from the extraterrestrial presence - or you might be one yourself - and that might get a little more advanced. They may have things like functioning artificial intelligence.
I'm open to most fantasy and science fiction races, concepts, and designs - barring certain things like these weird high school drama "fantasy" RPs that seem so popular these days. You are also free to make your own concepts, though of course those will be on a case-by-case basis. I'm open to suggestions regarding plot, alterations to the current story, and... well everything else. Is anyone interested? ^^.
