Sword Art Online
The world of Aincrad.
These phrases sparked imagination and excitement for millions of gamers in the year 2022. And finally, on November 6th, 2022, ten thousand players logged in to the public servers.
On November 6th, 2022, ten thousand players became slaves inside their NerveGear gaming systems. The rules were given to them: They could not log out, and if someone detached their NerveGear headset while they were logged in, the headset would fry their brains. The game was simple: ascend 100 floors of the Castle Aincrad, a giant castle where each floor was a different world. If they reached the top floor and defeated the final boss, they would be free. If they died in the world, they would die in real life.
There were no other rules.
Now, as players die everyday, either by a monster, by being unplugged, or by their own hand, many players push forward attempting to clear every floor of Aincrad, and to free themselves from Sword Art Online.
Feburary 22, 2023, almost 4 months after players are trapped in Sword Art Online.
Floor 5's main NPC city, Vastra, was a desert city based around a large oasis. The NPCs in the city reflected the floor's desert atmosphere, wearing heavy robes and keeping covered in the hot sunlight. Michael Belin swept his brow, looking toward the beating down sun. "Surely this heat isn't being made by the game," he muttered to himself, sitting down under a large palm tree. "It's just gotta be in my head."
He stood up, watching as some of the players bartered in NPC shops. Others chatted, discussing things that were going on the frontline.
"That's right," he muttered. "The advance teams are only about a floor ahead right now." It was still a big difference from the first few weeks. It had taken over a month to clear the first floor, but things seemed to fall into place after that. Here they were, pushing on the sixth floor now. It still didn't inspire too much confidence with the older man, however. In almost four months, they'd barely pushed six floors. And there were still 94 more floors to clear. Not to mention the deaths: hundreds still died daily, and rumors of player killing guilds were starting to follow through.
The emergence of guilds was begining. It started a few days after players arrived on floor 3, where there was a quest which allowed the starting of a guild. Several guilds had been founded, but Michael felt it was dangerous to just jump into a guild so easily. These were mainly kids and 20-somethings, and many of them probably had little experience leading teams. In a normal game, that wouldn't matter, guilds were just for fun and for making large groups of friends. But here, guilds were like small companies of mercenaries, and death was a very real fear.
He sighed and stood up, stretching his arms. "I should probably get some food soon-" he took a step forward, smashing his body into a younger player.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean-"
"HEY YOU OLD BASTARD!"
That wasn't the young boy's voice. He felt a push from behind, as a skinny teenager with a sword on his back stood, haughtily placing his hands on his hips. "You pushed my little bro!"
"I just took a step forward, I didn't mean to run into-"
"SHUT UP BASTARD!" He drew his sword. "No one messes with my little bro! Especially old thugs like you!"
"Stop! Don't-" he held out his hands, as the boy jumped, bringing his sword down and...
He was pushed back, but not hurt. Right! You couldn't attack other players in towns. They'd do no damage to you. It seemed the teenage boy didn't realize that. "Crap!" He looked to the younger boy. "Come on! Let's get out of here before he gets his friends after us!" The two stomped away.
"Damn kids..." he shook his head and chuckled. "Ah well, let's see about getting some food-" he opened his inventory and...
"Where...did all my col go?"
When he arrived in town, he was sitting at a nice 5,000 col. Good enough to get food and supplies before heading out. Now...there was only 1,000 col in his menu. "Did...did they kid...pickpocket me!?"
Now he was angry. "Get back here you punks!" He started off in the direction he saw them dash. Damn it! It took him months to save up that money!
