Star Trek will always be superior in story and writing.
Star Wars has more explosions and space wizards.
Grassy Troll Conspiracy.
Cloak and Swagger.
Well, I like the new star trek movies better than the star wars ones.
However, I think the BSG reimagined is better than either of them.
And even better than that? Mass Effect.
1x1 RPers (who plays female roles), go here:
“Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven. Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to turn a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law—a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household."
-Jesus, Matthew 10:32-36
I like both. They're both really awesome science fiction, and both have their issues. Star Wars sometimes relies a little too much on the PEW-PEW LAZER FIGHTS!!!!!, and don't even get me started on the prequels. Likewise, Star Trek can get so caught up in the philosophical it makes a college freshman who just took PSYCH 101 look humble by comparison.
But both of them have incredible strengths. When Star Wars isn't trying to blow you away with space battles and special effects, it tells a pretty decent story. It makes excellent use of archetypes and creates a compelling narrative that echoes themes from mythology and epic poetry. Star Trek creates a complex universe full of it's own politics and characters that make a colorful, life-filled world that has inspired people for generations.
Both of these works of fiction are pretty great, and both are worth the attention of geek culture today.
If you won't listen to me, maybe you'll listen to George Takei.
I remember reading something comparing the science of both Wars and Trek, and apparently the tech in star wars is so advanced that something like the Millenium falcon could wipe out the entire Federation single handedly.
George Takei is totally the man.
But yeah, Pally pretty much summed it up nicely. I enjoy both franchises, I just grew up with Star Wars and it appeals a bit more to my tastes. My only real gripe about Star Trek is that most of the aliens are just humans with some make-up.

Also I hate the new ST movies but that's immaterial.
I think a BSG treatment of ST would be big failure, while we're on that subject.
I think when you get down to it, Star Trek and Wars are both good, but Trek is more consistently good.
I mean think about it, For Star Wars, you got 2, maybe 3 films that are actually good.
Star Trek, you got at least 5 films that are good, (maybe more if you're generous) as well as at least 2 TV series with hours upon hours of character development and story-building.
