Bear with me, here. I'm still very much in development on this, but I've been running myself ragged with research and progress. I haven't slept in a few days because of it, but I'm hoping it'll be worth it. I'm only posting this here to see if what I've got so far is even the slightest bit intriguing.
Okay. So, plot run:
In many Indian religions, "samsara" is the concept of cyclic existence - a fate deemed nearly insufferable and torturous. Karmic actions and impulses are what drive the Bhavacakra (The Wheel of Life) and samsara, as a whole. At the end of one's life, the Bhavacakra - based on your actions and impulses and the Three Poisons (desire, aversion, and ignorance) - will grant you a new and potentially torturous life in one of the Six Existences. Good actions place you among the Daevas (gods), Asuras (demi-gods) or humans; while bad karma places you inside one of the three realms of hell, animals, or ghosts. No matter the realm of samsara you are transferred to, the existence is considered torturous because of its nature - no beginning, no end. The only way to free one's self from samsara is through the attainment of moksha - or liberation from cyclic existence. (Please Note: I'm still working much of the research, here. I'm probably not all that accurate.)
Because of samsara, many souls have been reduced to demons, and now wander the realms of hell and mortality, searching to bring about liberation of samsara through the annihilation of all that exist within these six realms. To boot, the Asurendra - leader of the Asuras - is leading the charge against a hidden landmark known as the Gate, which holds the realms of bardo. In order to open the Gate, one must find the six Keys of Brahman - objects that denote the highest reality. If the Gate is opened, the bardos (realms of limbo) will be released, and perpetual torture will be beset all of existence with hallucinations of all karmic actions and impulses made over the millennia by all souls of being, bringing about an end to the attainment of moksha - and a new hell that transcends all aspects of physicality, spirituality, and beyond.
You are a traveler within an alternate universe that aligns itself with the times of Japan's Edo period, on a mass of land known as Avatma, a coastal peninsula that connects to the mainland of Shintou from the north. An archipelago lies a little to the east of Avatma, peppered with ruins that offer rich history into Avatma's existence and the many ancestors that helped from Avatma's current state of thriving. On a journey to fulfill your agenda, you hear rumors that demons begin to run amok over the land, steadily claiming the lives of innocents and turning them into monsters. The more karma an innocent has gathered, the greater amount of strength and power the resulting demon has. The rumors continue to state that the land is experiencing catastrophes, but that the appearance of "holy beings" have quelled panic so far. You start to realize that may not be true, as disasters and deaths continue to rise.
Across Avatma, powerful warriors called Vedas have risen to take up the mantle of defeating the demons that ravage the land, to prevent them from unleashing hell onto the mortal plane. Marks upon their bodies, known as Mantras, grant them incredible abilities that will, in time, grow powerful enough to vanquish the Asurendra and its horde of evil. In order to keep the Asurendra from opening the Gate, these brave people will have to find and collect the Keys of Brahman - to purify and seal the Gate closed for eternity before the leader of the Asuras is able to influence these objects with the volitional impulses of karma and release torment onto Avatma and, eventually, the planet.
This is just a part of the whole thing. I've still got a plotline to really structure out, but this is (relatively) the sum of it. There are many concepts I wish to utilize in the RP, like the Vedas' possible usage of Karma - collected from fallen demons - to increase the power of the Mantra that each Veda possesses. Also, the Mantras themselves are practically tattoos, and the usage of Karma could develop the tattoo designs with more art and elaboration. The Mantras, in general, are Tibetan translations of aspects that govern your abilities - Power, Peace, Greed, etc., etc. I don't have much of a character sheet, and I'm still researching a tiny bit of various character sheets from RPs on this forum, in order to get a clear view of what I want. Also, I wanted to have a map of Avatma (and possibly Shintou, if I decide to extend the RP's sideplots into the region, so I'm looking for an artist to help with such. I will have a list of the Mantras allowable, soon - you can decide what abilities can come from them. Please Note: This is a potentially High Casual RP that plays along the lines of fantasy.
In Avatma, I plan to have a plethora of NPCs and various locations and landmarks that will allow pre-developed side-missions to take on for extra Karma and, quite possibly, an extra Mantra, while also adding a little history to the RP and Avatma, as well. Also, a pre-developed sideplot is in place that will be centered around a character named Asura, a tortured soul on a pilgrimage for peace and redemption (not to be confused with the Asuras in one of the six realms of samsara), and it will tie into the main plot and fit quite nicely.
I've been playing with the concept of reincarnation. I'll see where that takes me. No ideas, quite yet, but I'm getting there.
As with all my RPs, I love getting feedback and possible ideas from people who are interested, into which I will consider integrating into the RP. Credit goes accordingly, along with my thanks for your help. I would appreciate if any of you who are interested would keep in touch (either through VM or PM or by subscribing to this thread) so that I can provide you with updates on developmental progress.
