Welcome to The Realm. It's not what it used to be.
For thousands of years, kingdoms and empires of Men grew and thrived in The Realms, a grand continent of many climates and landscapes. To the West lies The Worldwater, an ocean flowing out to unknown ends. In the North, the White Desert, a cold, hard, flat land of sand and ice. In the East, the massive Sylean Sea, dotted with hundreds of small islands and rocks. Beyond that, the High Wilds: rugged hills that roll and ascend to mountains so sheer and tall, they are virtually impassable.
Now, there is only the Realm: a meager portion of land, pushed back against the Worldwater, desperately held together by the rule of Abython, a war hero whose effort and intellect likely saved Mankind from extinction. Twenty-three years ago, a terrible host spilled out of the Grimlands, spewed forth from the bowels of a dark Pit that formed without apparent reason. Legions of demonic beasts -- varying from braying goatmen and minotaurs to ghastly, fire-bellied gargoyles -- sacked, pillaged, and hewed the civilizations of Man. Five years after their onslaught began, The Realms and its rulers had lost all their former power. Leaderless and exhausted, the humans waited for their executioners to finish the bloody work. It was all but over.
Then Abython arose. He was an artisan -- a clock-maker, but in humanity's final years he had been designing an arsenal of mechanical weapons and armor. In this grave hour, he distributed his works to the military, replacing their simple swords and bows with clockwork guns and blades. Abython himself led the charge against the Demons until their nightmarish war came to a stalemate.
Now that the Demons have been halted, Abython sits on the last throne, the undisputed King of Men. The hordes are still roaming the lands outside his kingdom, hungry for flesh and blood, but kept at bay by Abython's miraculous technology. No humans venture outside the borders of The Realm, for to do so would be certain death.
Within the Realm itself, Abython rules through his military servants: Enforcers, they are called. Enforcers ensure that all citizens obey what they interpret to be the will of the King. The King himself rarely steps outside his citadel, and instead has his Court handle most of his legal responsibilities.
Plague, famine, and drought batter the Realm annually, and with little being done to prevent these troubles of the masses, unrest has been brewing among a number of citizens. To make matters worse, the Enforcers receive so little direction and are granted so much authority that they abuse their power almost incessantly. Being armored in mechanical suits of Abython's design and carrying weapons of similar craft, there is little that the average citizen can do to physically challenge an Enforcer. Still, resistance groups are forming that decry the tyranny of Abython's Enforcers, and although almost all of these opposition groups are peaceful, they are put down with the violent efficiency of Abython's lethal arsenal.
KYTHERA is the capital of the Realm, Mankind's last bastion against the Demon hordes of the Grimlands. Nestled against the ocean, the city is built around a massive, central fortress in which Abython, the King, lives. Here in Kythera, the Court make the laws, the Enforcers uphold the laws, and the citizens are forced to obey them. Of course, Enforcers have unchecked power, and they often abuse that power to take whatever they please from the citizens, or simply beat and/or harm the citizens for no reason. Within Kythera, there are a number of anti-government, secret coalitions forming, discussing their options to combat the tyranny of the Enforcers.
ABYTHON is the King of The Realm of Men, though he lives mostly in secret, allowing the Court to do his legislative work. Abython is a war hero and inventor who saved mankind by revolutionizing its war technology.
ENFORCERS use the technology developed by Abython to protect and guard the Realm from the Demons. They also use their armor and weapons to uphold order in the cities of the Realm -- though they all abuse their power. Something is causing the Enforcers to become cruel and unsympathetic.
CITIZENS are city folk and farmers who have normal jobs such as scholars, merchants, artisans, architects, and so on. They live safe from the threat of Demons under the protection of Abython's Enforcers, but no one protects them from the Enforcers themselves.
So, here we have a clockwork-fantasy setting. Exciting, isn't it? Essentially, mankind is nearly dead, but they've stopped the tide of destruction for the time being. As they try to regain what they had, people start to realize that this war hero, Abython, may not make as great a king as he did a war hero.
Abython saved humanity by radically changing the way it fights. Instead of swords, shields, and steel armor, the military now uses guns (simple guns that fire mechanically, not explosively -- i.e., propelled by a powerful spring system), clockwork blades (swords and sword variants that can have a number of interesting mechanical features such as spinning blades or spring-loaded daggers/darts), and clockwork armor (shields and armor that aren't simply worn, but installed. Enforcers have mechanical enhancements surgically implanted into their bodies to make them more resilient, faster, and/or stronger).
He's a mysterious King, hardly has anyone close to him, and has few direct witnesses to his deeds. Most people only know what he did based on what they've heard.
In this RP, we'll be playing the role of a human in the Realm. You can be an Enforcer or a citizen (if you're a citizen, you might be a rebel or simply and well-meaning farmer or peasant).
1. Be respectful.
2. No god-modding.
3. Be creative! If there are gaps in the lore, feel free to fill them in with your imagination. Make up names for places, imagine any geography you like, make up supporting characters/NPCs, etc.
4. Other standard rules apply
