Atari and Nightshade had travelled most of the day. After catching Whisper, they had decided it best to take things easy and get to know each other as they continued their voyage towards Accumla Town. The route they travelled on was peaceful and beautiful, surrounded by lush vegetation and a brisk salty breeze from the nearby ocean. Atari and her new partner talked almost endlessly, though it was most one ended for Atari, the little deino could indeed understand her and was growing to love his trainer for her passion for pokemon and her gentle soul. He wondered why she had such trouble making friends with other humans but of course could not really ask. Perhaps he would try and help her grow stronger socially as she in turn helped him creep ever closer to his final evolutionary stage. This seemed like a lovely idea but there was a slight problem; Nightshade couldn't see any other humans around. How was he to help her bond with humans if there weren't any to be seen?
Then, as if by some miracle of Arceus his plan was set into motion as the sound of a young man's voice echoed across the forested landscape. This was the perfect opportunity for Nightshade to help Atari become more social! He would ensure a battle between the two trainers; this would surely open the doors to conversation. He picked up his pace and his short legs carried him towards the shouting in the trees.
"Hey! Where are you going little guy? Nightshade wait!" Atari was surprised by the pokemon's sudden outburst and of course trailed along after him.
The two strayed from the path and into the wooded area beyond. Eventually Atari picked up on what Nightshade was heading towards; there was someone out here. A young boy by the sounds of it.
"Chingling use scratch! No wait! Not on me! WHOA~" Atari was growing concerned at the shouts drifting through the trees and sped up. As she rounded a large tree trunk a trainer came into view. He was apparently trying to teach his chingling a new move but seemed to be having difficulty doing so. "Come on now chingling, just concentrate and use scratch. You've got to have something sharp on your somewhere right? What about your teeth? Those could scratch, can't they? Or... maybe that would be a bite attack..."
Atari could help but chuckle, but almost immediately clapped a hand over her mouth as she realised she had given away her position. "Huh? Who's there?" Said the boy, looking around and then casting his gaze on Atari and Nightshade. "Ahhhh! No no no! You weren't supposed to see this! Argh... now the secret is out. Now everyone will know the technique behind teaching a chingling how to use scratch." The young trainer was quite upset by Atari's arrival and chewed his nails nervously, apparently in a great internal debate. "You leave me no choice, I'll have to beat you in a battle to ensure your secrecy! Chingling let's go!"
"No! Wait, I- I'm not going to tell anyo~" Atari hardly had a moment to think, the battle unfolded so quickly all she could do was react.
"Chingling, let's start with growl!" The small bell pokemon nodded and released a grumbling toll from its belly. The sound hit Nightshade's ears and gave him a discouraging chill. He was not enjoying the sound at all. "Now! Use Wrap!" The orange pokemon silenced its eerie growl and sped towards the deino with its ribbon like appendages extended, reaching for the dragon type pokemon.
"Nightshade dodge it and use tackle!"
"Dein!" Shouted the pokemon and swiftly veered to the side moments before the chingling could get a grip on him. He rotated on his front leg and kicked off the ground into a strong tackle. It landed but didn't do as much damage as hoped since the chingling managed to catch itself before it struck the tree behind it.
"Chingling use wrap again!" This time the pokemon was too quick; it ensared deino in a tight grip and was not about to let go.
"Argh... Okay Nightshade! I need you to concentrate and use Focus Energy! You can do it!" The grip of the wrap around the deino's ribs and neck was difficult to deal with and was causing his breathing to strain, but his determination was strong and soon his body glowed as his energy pooled. "Great now tackle that tree to get him off of you!"
Nightshade did as he was told and crushed the small chingling between his thick body and the trunk of a nearby tree but the pokemon's grip was too tight and it did not give in. "One more time Nightshade! You can do it!"
Ambition flared in the weakening pokemon's eyes and it bashed into the tree again. Finally, the chingling released its grip and drifted a bit away. "Great now use focus energy one more time!'' The dragon type closed its eyed and began to glow once more.
''AH! Nooooo! That's it, you asked for it!" Came the voice of the young trainer. "Chingling! Use Scratch!"
An awkward moment hung in the air as the little chingling sighed at it's trainer. Atari was trying not to face palm and decided to take this chance to end the battle. "Now Nightshade! Give them a dragon rage to remember!"
"Deino!" A deep tone of light welled up in the mouth of the deino and was released in a devastating beam of draconic power. The chingling was caught off gaurd and thanks to all the concentrated energy Nightshade had stored, the attack was indeed critical. The chingling let out a meek chime and fluttered to the ground, unable to collect itself. The battle was over, and though it came close with that horribly strong Wrap, Nightshade managed to impress Atari once again. The power of a dragon type was not debatable.
"Whaaaaaaaat? How could we lose! Awe!" The young boy fell to the ground dramatically, scooping his injured pokemon up and holding it to the skies as he let out a dramatic cry.
Atari approached the strange boy, unsure of how to go about addressing him. "Uh, look, like I was trying to say before... I won't tell anyone about your secret move... in fact... I wish you the best of luck in teaching your strong little chingling how to use scratch. That was a good battle... but maybe next time let people explain themselves? I wasn't looking for any trouble." She jumped back as the boy lept up from the ground, gripping his chingling to his chest.
"You haven't seen the last of the Great Aiden! We will return at full strength with the most powerful scratch ever executed by a chingling!" And with that he rushed off, seemingly towards Accumula Town to heal his pokemon.
Atari wasn't sure what to say or do at this point, the entire exchange had been... odd, to say the least. "Well.... uh, how about no more running into the woods to find shouting trainers... deal?" The deino nodded, equally stunned at the unusual encounter. "Off to Accumula Town then." And they started to make their way back through the woods towards the path they left behind.
