The world has fallen into war. Following the aggressive expansion of Demarik's Free Polvata Party, the eastern world has lashed out at its neighbors in a full-scale invasion. Palast, Gratonia and Sedonica have followed Demarik into battle, under direct influence of the Polvatas. The International Western Alliance, or IWA, has hastily banded together to defend the west from Demarikan assault. With several of Demarik's minor neighbors already fallen into ruin and others under puppet leaders, IWA headquarters has launched a counteroffensive into the Gratonian Union. This is where our story begins.
The militaries of this world operate in much different manners than our own, instead having similarities with the warrior classes of many feudal nations. Fighter pilots are looked upon as being modern knights-errant - chivalrous warriors of the skies. Pilots have evolved into a form of social class, rather than just a military role. As such, most pilots actually own their aircraft, and pass them down from generation to generation. In this way, jets are prized possessions of war and signify nobility. This means that the air forces of respective nations may not maintain a particular line of fighters, but a mix of different models - it is not unheard of to find squadrons of pilots using a mixture of different aircraft of comparable performance.
IWA fighter squadrons are comprised of volunteers from different nations, and as a result, can be even more diverse in aircraft makeup than single powers. You are a pilot of the IWA Air Service, 56th Fighter Squadron, nicknamed the "Black Hussars." This is but one of the many squadrons spearheading the IWA counteroffensive.
