Sword Art Online (Those Left Behind)
You were one of the lucky 10,000 users to get a copy of SOA on launch day, and upon logging in, you’ve found that you’re unable to log out. But why? Kayaba Akihiko, creator of Sword Art Online and of the NerveGear, has trapped the 10,000 players in the world of Aincrad. There are two ways out: die in the game, and you die in real life, or climb the world tower to the 100th floor and defeat the final boss.
This is a story of a group of new players, who band together in an unlikely circumstance. They have their own reasons for playing the game, and their own reasons for wanting to leave. But, if they are going to survive in this world, they have to work together. There’s no room for solo players and beaters in this story.
My goal for the story would be for it to span the early months of the game, and follow into the two year span of the adventures in SOA. The story would begin a few months into the game, after the first few floors have been cleared. Some characters may already be in a party, others may have been working solo for some time; and some may have come into tragedy on their journey. The point of the RP is less “we must beat the final boss” and more “these people are trapped in a virtual world and this is their life now, until they can escape”.
One fun thing from SOA is the skill system; there are an unlimited number of skills to learn, from cooking to smithing to being a merchant, and many of the characters in the show operate jobs on the side of their adventures. So of course, your character will have a set of skills as well. A list of skills from the manga and anime can be found here: http://swordartonline.wikia.com/wiki/Skills. You can also come up with your own skills, as long as it fits the setting and isn’t ridiculous.
There is one special skill in the story that few characters have: unique skills. None of our characters will ever have these game breaking skills, due to canon (only 2 players ever had them) and to fairness of the plot. The same goes with special weapons: early in the game most of the weapons will be “iron sword” “steel mace” etc. We will not walk around with Excalibur and the Dragon Slayer for the early months.
The manga/anime left a LOT of Aincrad unexplored in the story, and I really want to take advantage of this to craft a fun and original story for the characters. Completely original floors, boss battles and other things will occur, and we don’t have to worry about canon junk.
This roleplay is a mid to high casual RP, which basically means i'm expecting at least one to two paragraphs a post. Some description of where the characters are, some dialogue or inner-thoughts, stuff like that. Anyways, rules:
1. All standard forum rules apply
2. Roleplayers can have up to 2 PCs at a time, this is due to the perma-death system; if a character dies, they are dead forever. (You submit a new character if one dies, of course)
3. Remember that since this is a MMO game, the PCs aren't gods. They don't have crazy super powers, and have to work together to defeat normal enemies. This is ESPECIALLY true for floor bosses.
4. No canon characters. We can reference stuff if need be, but this is a story of a different group of characters that don't have magical plot armor.
5. If you're going to be unable to post, let us know here or in a PM. If you don't post in a week, and if we don't hear from you, the character is regarded as dead. (At the same time, i'm understanding about personal life issues, so again, if something comes up, just let me know)
Here's the character sheet:

And here are the accepted profiles:
Real Name: Lute Randall
Character Name: Mewt
Character level: 13
His hair, in real life, is darker. He stands at 5'7 and weighs in at 93lbs.
Weapon Type: Dagger
Skills: Musical Instrument
Biography: A kind soul that only wishes to entertain and bring joy to others through his music. He isn't the bravest, but is a good helping hand once motivated. His pride and joy is his flute, which he loves to use to raise morale of the people around him, or calm them.
Lute grew up in a library owned by his mother, it was a nice place for a kid to grow up, it certainly wasn't a place where you could get into much trouble... Unless you were little Lute, who, after his father bought him a flute, was very, very nosy. Although he annoyed some people, as he got better people began liking to read to his melodies, and actually sometimes approved of him. Happy by this, Lute made it his main focus to play multiple instruments so he could entertain people.
Over the years, he learned to play the flute, violin, and harp. Although he is better with a flute than anything else, he cannot play piano or guitar worth squat. But he still tries when he is alone (to avoid embarrassment.)
He also liked to spend time on the Library computers, around the age of 14 he got his own for his room, which when the library was closed, he spent time on it. Sometimes he just decided to catch up on sleep instead. Maybe he wouldn't be where he is now if he had taken a nap that day...
Back out there, in the actual world... The people wait, to hear his calm music play through the halls of the library. Lute felt it was his duty to play music for them, and is very determined to get back. Although, giving he isn't a huge force to be reckoned with, he could never do it alone... Not being seen as much, nobody has really wanted to take him with them. Of course, if they looked under the surface, something more important than power laid within Lute. The moments where his music played were some of the best for those around him in these rather life-threatening times...
Character Name: Amiya
Character level: 17
Weapon Type: Large Halberd with dark rod handle and strips of leather on the end.
Being born in London meant that Lacen had a pretty busy life from the time she was born. Her mother was a secretary at a hospital and her father was a wood worker who loved his job and the small salary that came with it. Since they never had the large money of some people, she was raised in the fashions of the year before, and her hair never looked at pretty as the other girls. Even in grade school, where kids are supposed to be nicer, she was given funny looks for the clothing she was wearing and for her messy knot of blonde hair.
Moving on up to and through high school she caught up a little with the clothing trends because she was able to get a job, meaning she could have her own money. This was one of the best things she could think to do, just work for her own things the hard way, until she found the paying internship that she had wanted since she was small. It was studying under a lawer from one of the better known law firm in the city. Though she loved the job she did get stressed out from time to time, so she started looking for outlets to give her a run on the ...smaller wild side. This was where the virtual games came into play, the easiest, safest stress relief she could get.
The early games were slightly annoying, causing headaches and pains, but once the nerve caps were done and good...well it was the best thing ever. A year before Sword Art Online came out to the ten thousand people she was playing a game where she met a man named Alec. Alec was amazing, to say the least, though they were almost the exact opposite. After only a few weeks of speaking over messages they met face to face at a cafe in Central London, both unable to stop grinning and unable to stop talking. Carrying on, they moved in with eachother after half a year, only a few months later did Alec propose. As a post engagement present Lacen bought them both a copy of Sword Art Online, a game they'd heard about for a long time. The opening day they both plugged in and got lost in the world immediately, in a good way of course. Both of them started to level up easily, out gaining exp every few minutes as fast as they could. They had enough gold after a few hours to find a nice home in The Town of Beginnings.
Life was rather happy in that little time, until the Creator called everyone to the center. After that, since they didn't instantly freak out, they just went back to their little home. Since there was honestly nothing else to do but head out, that's what they did. Like most everyone else they started looking for the first level boss, but after that was defeated, they moved through the floor slowly. It wasn't until floor three that disaster struck.
Lacen had been in one part of the woods, pulling small animals out of the trees to trade with NPC's, while Alec was in the other side. It wasn't until she heard him screaming that she knew something was happening and that there was something very wrong. She arrived at the sight just as the nasty gremlins were scurrying away with their dropped loot findings. It was the most agonizing find she'd ever experienced, knowing that he was almost instantly dead, his body next to hers, and that she couldn't touch him. It took her a few days to calm down, spending most of it in the woods fighting whatever she could to take out her anger. She eventually made it up to the fifth floor, where she just sat down for a while, not wanting to move anywhere or do anything for a while.
Maybe something could happen to her, something good...but she doesn't have anything assured to her.
Real Name: Carol Evershed
Character Name: Corona
Character level: 15
- Steel mace
- Chimera Shield (A low-level uncommon item, probably the best thing she's found so far)
- One-handed war hammer
- Medicine Mixing
Even as a little girl, Carol always pictured herself going into a job where she could help people - firefighter like her father, police woman, paramedic. As she progressed through highschool, medicine crystallized as her dream career, and she worked hard to get the grades she needed to go to university. 18 years old at the time of SAO's release, she was living in a cheap apartment near her university, working part-time as a barista to help pay her way through her first year. Something of a coffee addict and a fitness nut, she rarely had time to play the netgear her avid gamer roommate Sandra contributed to the apartment's living room. Her gaming experience was largely limited to VR tennis and the occasional co-op shooter with Sandra, so when a stroke of luck resulted in her winning a special give-away copy of the hottest new MMO from their local games store she couldn't help but grin at the irony. Deciding to fire the game up for a while before handing it over to Sandra when she came home, Carol made a profile and jumped right in.
An hour later, Kayaba Akihiko sprung the trap around his 10,000 victims, and Carol, now calling herself Corona, found herself in completely over her head.
Determined not to just wait the game out in the City of Beginnings, but completely inexperienced when it came to her new world, she likely would have ended up one of the many casualties of that first month if another player hadn't stumbled across her frantically studying the SAO help files and taken pity on her. He called himself Harlan, and it was clear from the outset that he was an outstanding player. He knew all the tricks, enemy patterns, hunting grounds, even the early quest solutions, and he seemed happy to pass this knowledge on to the newbie. Her grim determination and work ethic helped her soak in his lessons, and she quickly improved. It wasn't until after they'd parted ways and she spotted his name in an early edition of the player-published guide book that she realised he was one of the much-reviled beta testers.
Corona has been making her own way for a few floors now. She's seen her share of death, and the experience has only strengthened her desire to help her fellow players - both in the long term by beating the game, and in the short term by learning how to craft healing items and developing a combat style better suited to defending herself and others.
Real Name: Michael Balen
Character Name: Nurem
Character level: 14
Appearance: Michael has a fairly plain face, with a little bit of facial hair around his chin. He bears wrinkles on his forehead, a sign of stress. His character model in-game wears standard heavy armor, giving him the look of a middle aged knight. The huge axe on his back also gives off the impression.
Weapon Type: 2-Handed Axe
-2 Handed Axe
-Extended Weight Limit
Biography: Michael is a working father of two, and spends most of his time at the office, doing menial paperwork. That's probably what led him to purchase NERVGear and a copy of SAO. His goal was to do something fun and adventurous for the first time in years: to jump in a fantasy world and feel like he made a difference, rather than faxing papers to another company eight hours a day.
He was only going to play for an hour a day. So when he tried to log off and couldn't-his worst nightmares were realized. Michael has a reason for going back home: two sons and a wife waiting for him. His biggest fear is never getting back to his family, and something happening to them in the real world.
He plays the role of a father-figure to those around him, wanting to protect the majority of the younger players. Watching young people die all around him as hardened his experience, and steeled his desire to survive and escape, with as little death as possible. This had led to him being overly cautious with an approach to dungeons.

He was an only child, so his parents could solely watch over him. Even then, he didn't like his parents' constant attention, which lead to consistent fighting over his "freedom" within the family's house. Restrictions were made that he just couldn't live with. After a surprisingly calm conversation over the idea of Jerome moving out, his parents didn't oppose and chose to go along with it.
Now 17 years of age, Jerome will soon be attending his last year of high school, he had been living on his own for a while. With the new breakthrough in the gaming industry known as "NerveGear", Jerome couldn't wait to play on the console. Along with it's arrival was SAO, a VMMORPG, only admitted to 10,000 lucky gamers.
Currently, Jerome is a level 15 player, he is a solo player at heart, but has found himself helping out others more often. The first day hadn't mentally dismayed as it did to a percentage of the users in the game. He is a front line player, usually venturing off on his own.
