~ Pandemonium Road ~
IC Thread here.
Foreword and Notes: Greetings one and all. This is a roleplay and story based in the Disgaea-universe. If you are unfamiliar with the Disgaea-series, but still want to join, I strongly recmmoend that you visit the official wiki. I would also strongly recommend that you watch some Gameplay Videos or Let's Play-series of one of the games on YouTube, just to get a feel for the world, the atmosphere and the general idea of the setting. Be aware that as this is a roleplay, a story in which many people participate, several things have been changed and altered to as to fit better with this notion, and to allow people more freedom and choice, so as to make the story less like the games and just more 'fun' overall for everyone.
With this out of the way, I hope you'll read on and become interested.
Thank you in advance.
A lawless and chaotic realm,
populated by monsters and demons,
as well as other unsavory characters.
A place which since long ago
shattered into fragmented dimensions,
turning into a multiverse,
with countless, different worlds.
The one who rules one of these planes,
the one who governs and dictates over it,
is known as the Overlord -
a demon with the power to suppress and rule over all others.
In one of these realms however,
the seat of Overlord has recently become vacant,
and with no announced successor to claim the title,
countless demons have risen to try and take it for themselves.
A world-spanning conflict,
a great and bloody battle royale.
Both strong and weak rise to the challenge,
for there can be only one who wins the prize.
... And yet, our story... This story...
... Begins near a pile of rubble... In the middle of nowhere...
Quick Guide to the Netherworld:
What is the Netherworld, you may ask? Well, to put it very, very simply - the Netherworld is a realm supposed to embody and encompass what humans would commonly refer to as 'Hell'. Of course, unlike the stereotypcial version of the Abyss, there is more to the Netherworld than scorched earth, fire and brimstone - even if such areas do exist. In truth, the Netherworld is very varied in terms of geology, with forests, hills, snowy mountains, lakes, deserts, badlands, islands, skylands, swamps and other areas and biomes! In fact, it isn't all that different - albeit a bit more exaggerated and fantastic - than our own, mortal world. What really sets the Netherworld apart however, are the denizens.
Yes, the Netherworld is inhabited by a large and varied assortment of creatures - mainly made up and out of demons of various kinds. As implied by their name and stereotypical depiction, demons are beings of a wicked and evil nature, who live their lives doing malevolent and malicious things. Of course, in the Netherworld, this is how a demon should act, and in fact it is no different than a human following social norms and laws in the human world. A demon who does not do evil or bad things is a delinquent, a rebel, an outcast. Naturally, personalities and disposition of these inhabitants differ and vary greatly, just like in our realm.
In terms of technology and scientific advancement, the Netherworld is a place of inconsistency. On one hand, they still use things like swords, spears and bows - while also being able to cast and use magical and sorcerous energies. On the other hand, they also have things such as handguns, television, printing presses, garbage disposal facilities and other, rather fairly advanced machinery or facilities. Various vehicles also exist, including cars and motorcycles and even spacecraft. Because of this, it's very hard to give a clear definition of where the Netherworld is in terms of scientific advancement, but it is clear that they at least have access to several things that the modern-day human world has, as well as magic.
There are of course many aspects and facettes of this strange, horrible and magnificent world - but this brief guide should help you get a basic grasp on things! The rest, you're better off learning through the golden and trusted way of touching'n exploring!
Common sense, aka: Rules:
Read and obey the following list of regulations.
I also urge you to consider that this list may be edited and changed at any time, at my discretion. So keep an eye on it.
1. No God-Moding.
2. No Auto-Hitting.
3. No Ever-Evasion.
4. No Character-Hijacking (Writing out, in your post, what a different player's character says/does/reacts without their approval)
5. No Story-Hijacking (Writing in scenarios, events and/or situations into the plot without the GM's explicit consent/approval)
6. No obviously graphical sexual content - Innuendos are fine, blatantly stating how you shove your 12 inch #### into the sopping wet ##### while you ######### that ### with a #####, is not. Keep things PG-13, and the mods should leave us alone.
7. No Canon Characters! Yup, you're not allowed to play as any of the Canon Characters from Disgaea or any other Nippon Ichi games. Using their appearance/image is fine if you want to look that way, but using their personality/traits/unique skills is not. This is because I feel that fans and people are not capable of doing canon-characters justice - no matter how hard they try.
8. No Hollywood-swearing. It's fine to cuss or say a foul word every now and then, we're mostly demons after all. But going: Fuck the fucking fuckers who fucked up my fucking fuck! - is not.
9. No destructive criticism, bullying, harassing or any other kind of douchebaggery towards other players, in either IC or OOC.
10. Please keep in mind that Disgaea is a rather laid-back, light-hearted and comedy-focused series. We're not into grim-dark here.
11. Prinnies explode when thrown.
12. Follow the rules and have fun, otherwise, GTFO!
Q: So, who can we play?
A: You can play as any class from Disgaea: Hour of Darkness (Disgaea1) through Disgaea 4 - excluding the Celestial Host, Majin, Dragons and Android-classes. You may also play Custom Classes - classes which names, abilities and weapon-proficiencies you come up with on your own.
Q: Is there a difference between if we play a Generic Humanoid/Monster class and a Custom Class?
A: Yes. Playing a Generic Class/Monster will mean that you can only use their abilities and proficiencies, as well as having a 50%, -50% and 0% Elemental Resistances. If you play a Custom Class, you may make up to three custom abilities and set your Elemental Resistances to 0% for all three elements, or raise and lower one to equal power (up to 50/-50) like a generic class.
Q: If we get custom abilities, why would we want to play a regular, generic class?
A. Because some Generic Classes have access to more abilities than Custom Classes. Generic Classes typically also have better weapon proficiencies and can be reincarnated into a DIFFERENT class, keeping the abilities/skills they have learnt.
Q: ... Then why would we want to play a custom class!?
A: Custom Classes have more versatility and can typically do more things/be more adaptive than a Generic Class, who has a 'set role'. Custom Classes can also be tutord by Generic Classes to learn some of their most basic abilities - like the lowlevel Mage/Skull spells.
Q: Are there stats and levels in this story? Do we have to do number-crunching?
A: No. There are no levels or aptitudes to keep track of in this story. The only thing you need to keept rack of is that as you participate in the story, use your abilities and weapons, you will gain more weapon-skills/new spells and they will become progressively stronger. You could call this 'levelling up', but really, it's just a natural result - the more you practice and use something, the better and stronger you become at it.
Q: Does the story follow a linear path? Are there side-quests/stories? Can we do a chapter that focuses on my character's backstory?
A: The story follows a path towards a goal, however, how you - the players - act and solve various situations will influence the eventual end and epilogue. There is lots of room for side-questing and side-tracking, if that's what people want, but it won't be something I do actively unless it needs to be done, or has some significant meaning. You're very welcome to plot and plan scenarios, events and mini-story arcs with me. Just get in contact through PM here on RPG and we can discuss the details.
Q: How many characters can we make?
A: At the start of the story, you may only have one character. As we move on, people may be allowed to have more than one character under their control. We'll see about that when it becomes relevant though.
Q: You mentioned Reincarnation? Are there any other Game-Mechanics you've copied from the games over to the RP?
A: Not too many. We do have the Item World/Item Sea as well, but it's been dumbed-down and down-scaled to make it actually viable for RP purposes. After all, if we were to write a chapter about having to go down 100 floors in an Item World, this thing would never end - especially if everyone wanted to upgrade all their equipment.
Q: Can I play an antagonist/enemy of 'the party'?
A: At the start of the RP, no. This may become an option as we advance into the plot and people may (or may not) be able to create additional characters. But for now, at the beginning, you'll hafta be a 'good' guy.
Q: What's Reincarnation all about?
A: Reincarnation is a system wherein you are reborn, as either a more powerful version of your current self or a different class/creature entirely. You will be reset to being a weak-sauce scrub, but you'll keep all the spells and weapon-ski,,s you've collected. It's very useful for expanding your ability-repertoire. Keep in mind that Weapon Proficiencies change if you reincarnate as a different class, unless you're a Monster.
Q: Can Custom Classes Reincarnate too? Or are they screwed?
A: They can Reincarnate as well, of course - however, they cannot switch classes and simply become plain stronger. As the story progresses, this will allow Custom Classes to learn more custom abilities, to let them keep up with Generic Classes.
If you have any other questions, feel free to ask and I will answer and add them to the F.A.Q.
Character Sheet Template:
This is the Character Sheet-template for this roleplay. Make sure you use this, and only this, template when making your character. Those who do not use this particular template will not be accepted, as it was mdae for easy and clean reading/checking.
Name: Your character's name.
Alias: If your character has any titles, nicknames or such, put them here. Otherwise, leave blank.
Age: How old your character is.
Race: Human, Demon or Monster.
Class: Specify your class, put (Custom) behind your class-name if it's a self-made class. A list of classes can be found at the Disgaea wiki.
Gender: Male, Female, Both, None or Something else.
Appearance: Please provide a basic description of your character, which includes their height, weight, physique, hair/eye/skin color, everyday clothes/outfit and so on. Pictures are strongly encouraged, however, please remember to provide the basic text-information as well.
Personality: Write a brief description about what your character's disposition is like, how they interact with others, what they value/cherish/dislike, etc.
History: Write a little something about your character's past.
Abilities: Please specify what abilities your character has. Existing classes get four, pre-set abilities, custom classes get three, self-made ones. If you need help with abilities, please feel free to ask. All pre-made abilities of pre-made classes should be available on the Disgaea wiki. Noe that classes that don't have any particularl abilities of their own, like Fighters/Brawlers, you start out with the first weapon-skill of your starting-weapon as your ability (Swords get Sword Rush, Axes gets Boulder Crush, Spears get Impaler, etc).
Proficiencies: List which and how proficience you are with the available weapons of the world. Note, Monsters can leave this blank.
- Sword: E - A
- Spear: E - A
- Axe: E - A
- Fist: E - A
- Bow: E - A
- Gun: E - A
- Staff: E - A
Note: For every A-rank proficiency you have, you must have an equal number of E-rank proficiencies. Likewise, you must have as many D-rank proficiences as you have B-rank ones. You may have as many C-rank proficiences as you wish.
Elemental Resistances: If you are playing a non-custom class, please select one element that you have a 50% resistance to, one that you have a 50% weakness to and one that you have no particular resist/weakness to (0%). Custom classes may leave all their resistances at 0%, however, if you want resistance to an element, you must have an equal amount of weakness to another element - also, you cannot have more than 50% resistance to an element, and you cannot be strong/weak to more than one either.
Gear: Please list one weapon (if you aren't a monster) and one piece of either clothing or accessory (jewelry, etc). All equipment will be unremarkable and plain at the start of the story, but will be allowed to gain power and properties as the tale goes on. Thus, it doesn't matter what your items look like, as they will be fairly weak-sauce regardless at the start of the story.
