Major Patrick Rudder is the commanding officer of Alpha Company, 4th Special Forces Regiment (Rangers). Patrick was born on Alderaan to a Republic Naval Officer named Carl and a schoolteacher named Deena, and has one sister, a smuggler named Silara. From a young age, Patrick, wanted to follow his father into military service, a rarity on the often peace-inclined Alderaan. His father urged him to join the Navy, or the Alderaan Security Forces, but Patrick longed for what he believed to me more meaningful, and more exciting, pursuits, such as the Imperial Stormtrooper's Officer Corps. He attended the Imperial Academy at Carida, where he scored top marks in tactics, leadership, and marksmanship, graduating near the top of his class and earning his commission as a Stormtrooper Lieutenant. When Crix Madine began forming the Storm Commandos, Patrick was selected after a grueling entry test to be one of the founding officers.
Not a year later, however, everything changed with the destruction of Alderaan. Patrick abandoned the Empire, defecting to the Rebellion and joining their own Special Forces, and it was not long before he was once again working under General Crix Madine, another defector to the Alliance. Patrick went through the SpecForce training and joined the Rangers, or Wilderness Fighters, specializing in combat in all manner of terrain. He fought in several major battles of the Civil War, including the Battle of Hoth, where he and his men fought in the trenches and were on one of the last ships to evacuate the planet following their defeat. In 4 ABY, Patrick went on a mission to the industrial planet of Exaron to recover what was deemed "vital" intelligence of an unknown nature. He was captured by Imperial forces following trickery by his contact's partner, but sprung free by a local dissident cell. He worked with the cell to strike back at the Empire as well as to follow leads on the intelligence, but a hacking attempt by a dissident by Nara Kesh was uncovered, bringing the Empire swiftly down upon the dissidents. The majority of the cell was killed, aside from a small group which Patrick led to escape. They linked up with one of the cell member's smuggler contacts, who put them into contact with Zz'nt, a local crime boss who agreed to help against the Empire. They then received word about the movement of Patrick's Bothan contact, Gath Laons'hir, and set an ambush which freed Gath. Gath led Patrick to Lieutenant Colonel Moreau, an Imperial Intelligence officer who wished to defect to the Alliance. He had intel about a massive Imperial Intelligence operation, Operation Vibrowire, which he had planned, which was a coordinated strike on all members of Alliance High Command to occur in less than ten days. During extraction, Moreau was killed and Patrick wounded, but Moreau gave Patrick a datachip with all the information about the mission on it. Patrick and several others were able to escape Exaron and link up with the Alliance warship coming to pick them up, where they transmitted the data about Operation Vibrowire. The intel resulted in all of the Imperial Intelligence assassins being captured or killed and saved the lives of Alliance High Command. During his time on Exaron, Patrick also met and fell in love with one of the dissidents who worked with him throughout and escaped Exaron with him, a Zeltron named Dela Xioxi, who joined SpecForce after the mission and served with his company as an intelligence specialist.
In 5 ABY, the New Republic went on a wide offensive to push the reeling Empire off of as many worlds as possible. Alpha Company was assigned to the Third Battle Group under Admiral William Burke, who managed to divide part of Imperial Admiral Ledre Okins's fleet, leaving the planet Colla less defended by naval forces than usual. However, in order to give the New Republic the best chance of victory, General Brenn Tantor, commander of 3rd BG's ground forces, ordered Patrick to lead a strike team to Colla IV to disable their planetary defense systems to the best of his ability. Patrick led his team to the surface, where they destroyed the Imperial long-range sensor station, preventing the Imperials from being able to effectively track naval units. Patrick and his team next moved to a seemingly-insignificant Imperial Army transportation depot, where the SpecForce intended to use one of the Imperial computers to hack into Colla IV's network to gain intelligence for the Battle Group. While they were attempting to uplink, however, they were attacked by Imperial Storm Commandos led by Agent River, an Imperial Intelligence agent whom Patrick had known during his time at the Academy. The two had been close, but she was Force-sensitive and had been experimented on by Intelligence, turning her into a killing machine. Upon seeing Patrick, she snapped out of it for a short time, and aided the strike team by giving them some access codes, as well as buying them time for them to leave the depot before Imperial reinforcements arrived. Patrick and the strike team moved for almost a day to their next objective, a Defender planetary ion cannon, in order to sabotage it and prevent the Imperials from being able to use it against the Republic fleet during the assault on the planet. Patrick led a small infiltration team into the complex, leaving the rest of the strike team outside in the jungles, but inside the complex he encountered River again, who alerted the Imperial defenders before relapsing again and breaking down. The SpecForce managed to fight off the Imperials and disable the ion cannon, and while moving to the next objective, Patrick tried to connect with River. He encountered several failures trying to break through to her until finally he reached some traction, just before having to hit their final mission. Promising that he would get her off-world after the mission was complete, Patrick agreed to leave River out of the attack on an Imperial Navy TIE airfield, and headed off to lead the assault. The plan was to rig the fueling points for the fighters and bombers with explosives, and then to blow the explosives, igniting the fuel and destroying the spacecraft sitting on the airfield. During the assault, however, Patrick and his half of the team became pinned down by two Stormtrooper E-Webb heavy repeating blasters, halting their progression. River sensed that Patrick was in danger and rushed to the airfield, where she stealthily attacked the E-Webb gunners, freeing up Patrick and his team to finish planting their charges and withdraw back outside the base. Once they were clear, Patrick gave the order for the charges to be detonated, and the fuel beneath the airfield exploded, destroying the planet's complement of fighters and bombers. Their mission on Colla IV now completed, Patrick and his team signaled for extraction. The Vigilant Resolve
jumped into the system and dispatched shuttles, which picked up Patrick, River, and the team, and returned to the ship before jumping to safety. Aboard the ship, Patrick was able to convince River to get help from Republic doctors to heal her mental anguish, and the two parted ways for good, with River heading into treatment and Patrick continuing his missions with the Third Battle Group. As a result of the operation by Patrick and his strike team, Colla IV's defenses were greatly degraded, and the Imperial fortress world fell shortly thereafter to the Third Battle Group's invasion. Taking Colla IV was a major victory for the New Republic and paved the way for the Third Battle Group to begin attacking the Core Worlds held by the Empire.
