Hunter x Hunter: into the dark continent
The sky is a marvellous azure blue with not a cloud in sight, and the sun rising, red hot, above the horizon. To say it was warm would be an understatement, and the heat was only augmented by the fact that Lev was standing in the York New airship docks, where hot air and the stuffy smell of fuel pervaded the already stifling atmosphere. Lev had riffled through the CVs of all the applicants as he had the job of sorting out who to take on the mission. It shouldn't take long to filter out most of the garbage. Yet there were a couple that did catch his eye.
Lev had high hopes for this mission, it was his first time leading a team for such an extended period of time. He needed hunters whom he could allow a certain amount of autonomy. On top of this he needed a variety of hunters in order to tackle any situations they might come across.
Lev wiped his brow with a grimy handkerchief, pacing back and forth around the dock, in front of the airship which had been given to him for this mission, it was a large affair. A huge balloon, already filled pulled skywards, light blue armour plates adorned the ship and a vicious serpent statue was affixed to the bow.
Lev did not stop pacing or sit down. He had read that people who spend less time sitting down can expect to Iive up to five years longer. As the more prompt hunters began to arrive, Lev fished a notebook from his pocket and began making notes. It was a habit of his to properly document as much as he could.
Lev was eager to set off but his curiosity about the hunter's various abilities and techniques was keeping him from getting too bored. Besides he was interested to know how the hunters would act knowing how few of them would be accepted.

Crowna breathed in, inhaling the humid fuel-tainted air into her lungs as far as they would expand, then let it escape slowly from the confines of her chest. Her amber eyes surveyed the airship docks, and she tried to stamp out her fear of flight with more breathing exercises. She would not let a fear beat her, an impractical one at that. She rolled her shoulders, letting a shroud of Ten envelop her. Her aura came flared out in brilliant teal hues before forming close to her body.
Aurelia had told Crowna of this job, and had even sent in an application for her student without asking. "Tch. Old woman is making a fool out of me." The ebony skinned woman mumbled as she continued forward, the only possessions she carried on her besides her clothes were packed away in a small draw-string bag slung across her shoulder. Her footfalls led her directly to a small group of hunters forming next to an impressive airship. A man with a notebook was pacing back and forth, while the hunters around him seemed to be forming a semi-circle as they waited for... something.
Crowna arrived, worming her way through the group to the front and ended up next to tall man, all muscle and tattoos. He spat at the ground every so often, apparently he was chewing tabac. She tore her eyes away from him. She hoped that he wouldn't be going with them on their mission. Her gaze would wander back to the airship, causing her to gulp and lick her lips nervously as she stood waiting for the boss of this mission to pipe up.
Chan laid still as water on the bed, trying to wrestle a storm of thoughts into a coherent plan for the hours to come. For the first time in ages he was excited. He had spent the last few days recovering his body in preparation for this job, and he wanted to play those crucial first few hours of any job as well as he possibly could. He glanced at the mechanical clock next to him. Almost time, he thought. Need to hurry up and get ready. So he closed his eyes, tore his thoughts away from the incessant ticking coming from that annoying little contraption, and continued preparing for the journey ahead.
While Chan was still weaving his way through the airships docked in York New, still a good distance away from the serpent-headed airship he was looking for, he felt the heavy tension, hidden underneath a thin layer of deception, that only a closely packed group of strong hunters waiting on a mission could generate. When that many powerful people were within arms length of each other, they got suspicious(and well they should).
As he got even closer, though, he felt a strong aura - no, many strong auras. Too many. Instinctively he Gyo'd his eyes as he approached the group, scanning those who were using Ten, and those who were not. He didn't bother trying to read the motivations behind whether they were using Ten or not, though. He knew he'd get nothing from these people, not right now, not for the first hour or so. But later he'd make it a point to learn about those who had a nice, strong Ten up.
Old men get distracted too easily, he thought. Stay on track, kid.
Chan hooked his thumbs through his belt loops, bouncing slightly on his toes. He smiled and pretended to study the serpent head, while scanning the airship's windows for passing attendants or janitors, or even pilots. It's possible the boss, no doubt at the front of this gaggle of power, was going to fly us himself. In which case, things would start to get very, very complicated.
In York New city a few buildings away from the airship docks there was a figure standing on one of the hotel's, a boy wearing a black trenchcoat, black hair and crimson eyes watching the sun rise in the horizon. The smell of the fuel coming out of the airships that head it to the docks, Zanku looked at the clock hanging on the side of the building across and saw it was almost time, he stepped forward and jumped off the ledge towards the smaller building next to the hotel and moving from building to building until he reached the docks.
Zanku entered the docks of Yorn New and wandered through the crowds of people searching for the airship, carrying a bag on his back he took a look around. On his last job he received a call from a Hunter who was both his teacher and his friend, the Hunter taught him about what hunter's do and the system. Zanku got interested when his friend mentioned the Dark continent, he heard rumors about it and applied for it.
Now walking through the docks he noticed a number of hunters some with quite a strong aura, he walked past them like they didn't even notice Zanku . Finally he spotted the location of where everyone was supposed to meet, he walked over to the airship and saw that a hunters already arrived. He noticed a man with a notebook and a ebony skinned woman standing next to a big guy, Zanku walked over to a spot near the airship where he could sit peacefully alone. He putted his bag on the ground and leaned against a pillar.
Vereth sat in his room contemplating the origin of the mysterious medallion that he held in his hand. He found it in a ruin 3 years ago and ever since, he has never been able to discover its origins or who created it. All he knew was, if a Nen user, touched the medallion, it would start to glow and it would actually consume a Nen user's Aura. Flicking it up in the air, Vereth caught and put it around his neck. Clicking the light off beside his bed, Vereth went to sleep.
The next morning was important for Vereth. Today he would embark on a grand adventure into the Dark Continent. It was only him and a handful of selected Hunters that were going. He got dressed and pack up his essential belongings. Touching the medallion around his neck, Vereth could feel it absorbing his Aura. He then realized he could the medallion to store needed Aura. He the could access it at anytime he needed to. Heading out the door, Vereth headed where the Airship was docked and waiting.
Arriving at the airship docks, Vereth scanned for the one he needed to get on. Pin pointing the one he needed to get on, Vereth headed towards the airship. When he arrived near it he felt the presence of many strong Auras. Using Gyo, Vereth scanned the group of Hunters. There was a muscular ebony skinned woman, who obviously looked agitated by the hulk of man standing next her. Next Vereth saw a rather short teenager leaning up against a piller. Finally he saw what looked like the leader of the group of Hunters. The man was pacing back and forth scribbling on his notepad.
Walking near the teenager leaning against the pillar, Vereth set his bags down and the ground, and waited to see what happened next.
Verily I say unto you, quench your thirst by enjoying my cool taste and refreshing crispness from within your own refrigerator. Do it!
Perceiving that a significant number of hunters had gathered and deciding he had no need for late comers, Lev opened his notebook to a different page, finishing writing and strode purposely so he was font and centre in front the airship. His airship. It was time to find out who would join him on his journey. Lev drew himself to his full height, which was about a head taller than average and took a deep breath in.
"Alright listen up!" Shouted Lev, his eyes moving back and forth across the crowd excitedly."I've devised a test to choose sort you." Reaching into one of the packs that hung from his belt, Mikhail produced a single marble-like object. It was a dark mottled amber with a primal glow to it, just touching it he could feel it's power. If anyone used gyo they would see it had an aura bigger than some of the hunters.
"This is true tiger's eye. It's worth enough to live in luxury for generations. You will find 3 partners and bring it back to me". As soon as the words left his lips Mikhail tossed the small marble and then delivered a straight kick to it, sending it flying high over the rooftops and sailing down into York Shin."Try not to do too much damage to the city." Smiled Mikhail crossing his arms."The game's begun."
Mikhail's partner, the ships pilot gave him a nod to tell him that everything was in working order. The Pilots nen crew would follow each of the group's progress.
Three partners. Teams of four. One object. The natural conclusion, of course, is that only one team will be going on the expedition. But that means that this man is thinking about taking a team of five to the Dark Continent. What if he's thinking about eliminating the team that finds the object? He'd be able to bring a sizable number of hunters, but undoubtedly he'd get hunters that lost accidentally. No, he's planning on bringing a very small team.
This internal monologue took less than second, and then Chan had made up his mind. He was still partially trying to solve the mystery of the appearing Nen, but his body was already moving towards the nearest group. He'd already positioned himself near the people he felt had the most potential; it was only natural he needed to team up with them. He made a note of the ones he would need to ensure didn't go on the mission, for their sake and their comrades.
The hunter he was walking towards was a hunter he'd been keeping tabs on for quite a while. She was easy to pick out - a short, dark-skinned woman in a white kendo uniform. Her accomplishments were numerous, and the information he had pointed to a young hunter with plenty of potential. Her nervousness was written all over her face and body; Enhancement-type, no doubt. Honesty, and a touch of kindness, would be the best approach here.
"Crowna!" he called, smiling brightly. "You've quite a reputation - but no one told me you were so ravishing."
He bowed, taking the chance to remove his Gyo - a sign of trust. When he looked up, he laughed loudly.
"You must be confused - no, we haven't met before. The name's Chan. How's that old bag doing nowadays?" He grinned, as if to dare Crowna, and the hunters close to her, to figure out the implications of his greeting. That information was his specialty, and his power could be hers, if she chose to accept it. The game's already begun, girl. I hope you see that. So. Your move.
After quite a number of Hunters had arrived the man with the with the notebook grabbed out of a pack that was hanging on his belt, the object he pulled out was named the true tiger's eye. The boy sitting against the pillar lifted his head slowly a bit up which created a shadow over his eyes hiding his face in darkness, he sensed something coming from the marble. There was a aura coming from the true tiger's eye that bigger than some of the hunters that had gathered.
Zanku slowly stood up and picked his bag up, he started to move and was ready to get the object. But as he slowly walked he bummed against a hunter near Crowna and chan, the man he Zanku bummed into was a average sized man with a bandana on his head and a scar on his cheek, the man turned around and looked down on Zanku. The moment Zanku lifted his head up and looked the man into his eyes, the man with the bandana suddenly screamed and fell over on his butt. A scream could be heard from the man as he was looking with fear at the boy, the boy looked back at him with his crimson eyes. As the man was shivering he spoke with a frightened voice.'' T-t-those eyes !......'' As he raised his voice he yelled out.''WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING HERE......D-d-d-demon eyes Zanku !?....''
The time Zanku took the Hunter exam the man with the bandana also took the exam, but he was defeated just like the rest of the applicants last year. A boy with demonic like crimson eyes took down the other applicants and was the only one to pass, they nicknamed him ''Demon Eyes Zanku''. The man with the bandana stood up shivering and turned around running away.''I'M OUT OF HERE!!...'' He screamed as he left the docks, the boy didn't care about any of that .
Zanku resumed walking and walked just next Chan and Crowna , with each step he takes he slowly passes by them.
Crowna perked up as the man in the center of the semi-circle started speaking. From the corner of her eye she saw the man next to her also straighten a bit and spit out the rest of his tabac at her feet in his haste. She side-stepped it before it hit her foot, and then she gagged a little as it made a squishing sound on the ground where her foot had just been. She hated tabac. Especially when it was spat at her. The man had apparently heard her gag as he was now looking at her with disdain, a challenging look in his eyes. She met his beady eyes with her amber ones and raised an eyebrow, as if to say "try me." She felt him pull Gyo into his eyes and inspect her aura. He immediately retracted his Gyo after a second of looking and tried to back away from her as casually and as swiftly as possible. She wasn't going to hide her power, to apply In to her aura to conceal it as many of the other hunters had.
When Lev had taken the true tiger's eye out she applied Gyo to her own eyes. She was taken aback by the aura the stone projected, and her concentration on the man holding it intensified. At the mention of three partners she took imperceptible glances around the group she was standing in, trying to find possible choices. Her eyes set upon a gaunt looking man coming towards her, and they widened in surprise as he greeted her. How does he know me? She thought, her curiousity heightened. "Master Aurelia is doin' alright. How are you doing? You must have had a rough trip." Crowna said, casual and friendly as if she knew Chan.
Just then a man screamed about "demon eyes" and she turned to look at the commotion. When Zanku came near her and Chan she resisted the urge to stop Zanku physically, instead saying, "That seemed like a big deal, "Demon Eyes Zanku". Impressive nickname." Her lips parted in a smile, "I'm Crowna Shi. You should come with him and I." She tilted her head to indicate Chan, already understanding that the gaunt man wanted to be one of her partners - even if she did not know what Chan's name was yet. If this Demon Eyes fellow comes with us we'll only need one more person. When we're in a more private location I'll ask that gaunt man what his name is. She decided, looking between the two men.
As he was walking towards the direction of the object he heard someone speaking to him and stopped, near him were 2 people standing. He looked beside him and looked at the female with ebony skin , looking at her with his crimson eyes it was kinda understandable why he got the nickname. ''It doesn't matter what they call me....'' THe boy said with a cold and calm voice, after she asked him to join her and the male next to her he took a quick look at him and returned his attention back to her. ''Very well, but don't get in my way....''
He looked forward and started move again.'' My name is Zanku Yazuka.....I'll go on ahead......'' As he said Zanku went on ahead, but before he left he threw a paper at Crowna with his number in so she could contact him. He walked towards the exit of the docks and once he was out of the docks Zanku jumped up and using the side of a building jumped once more up on top of a roof.
After taking a look around he saw a familiar building in the direction where the tiger's eye was kicked too, he jumped from roof to roof into the direction of York Shin.
