Today was the day! Yumi could feel her heart pounding in her chest as she walked down the incredibly busy market street, her mother'a hand grasped tightly around hers. Droves of people were rushing to the town square, all of them wanting to see the rider for themselves. The governor of Tierm had informed the busy port city that an Elf rider was coming to test the young people with a dragon egg. Of course, almost the entire city wanted to come and see the rider. They were a rare sight, even though they were known for flying around on important business nowadays. Yumi couldn't believe that a rider was finally coming to the city, and that she might get her chance at joining thier ranks!
Yumi and her mother arrived at the town center with barely a moment to spare. No sooner had they arrived when wing beats could be heard in the air. People turned and pointed at the sky, cheering as the rider and his brilliant Silver dragon began to circle the town center. The dragon roared as it came in for a landing, making the townspeople back up and create a large ring around the large podium that had been erected for this occasion. The rider dismounted, and as he did so an eerie silence fell over the crowd. He looked at the gathering, taking in the crowd a moment before reaching into his Rucksack. From it, he withdrew the reason for his presence here; A blue dragon egg!
He gave a long, colorful speech about the history of the riders, the importance of youths, and the great honor and responsibility one receives from becoming a rider. His voice was rich and soothing, and Yumi clung to every word. When he was done, he asked ever child between nine and sixteen to join him on the podium. Tierm was a big place, but there were only about 20 kids that had the nerve to test their luck at becoming a rider. Yumi was one of them. The Rider went from child to child, letting each one place a hand on the egg for a few moments. Each child was turned away, one after another. Even Vriska, the girl that had tormented Yumi for so many years, was turned away. Finally, the rider came to Yumi. She was nearly shaking with both excitement and apprehension. The elf seemed to pick up on this and gave her a reassuring smile, kneeling down so she could place her hand on the egg easier. Yumi did so, her hand shaking. A second passed. And another. Yumi's heart began to sink... Until she felt something. Like something had shifted ever so slightly within the egg. The rider's smile grew to a grin, and he stood up strait, taking Yumi's hand and holding mthe egg high. "People of Tierm!" He shouted, now raising Yumi's hand. " I give you your new Rider!" The effect was almost instant. The crowd burst into cheers, and Yumi went into shock. She was... A rider? She was so surprised that all she could do was stare blankly while the information sunk in. The Rider's dragon let out a triumphant roar, drowning out that of the crowd's.
