Off in the horizon, dawn breaks. In the distance, you faintly hear strong flapping of a bird's wings. While this normally wouldn't be strange to you, this sound is very familiar. The silhouette of a three-legged bird of prey makes its appearance over the sun. As it comes closer, there is no mistaking it. The sheen and color of its coat make it obvious that the bird is one of the king's messenger's. For many years, you've seen the bird flying by your home, delivering countless letters to great and noble adventurers. Knowing that it could not possibly be for you, you continue on with your daily routine. Then, as you turn your back, a squawking noise is heard behind you. You turn your body around once more to see the bird perched on your window. In its forward talon is a clenched a white scroll, a wax seal with the king's insignia ensures the authenticity of the scroll. Hesitantly, you walk over to the bird. It spreads its wings as if to display its strength. This action throws you off for a second, but it doesn't stop you from receiving the message. With a gulp, you unravel the scroll and read it aloud.
Have you ever heard the story of the King Slayer? He is a legendary assassin known to have walked the planet for nearly four centuries. As his name suggests, the King Slayer was known for slaying kings. He has also butchered many generals, some of them our own; and murdered regents, including those of other nations. As it stands, no political figure is safe from this killer's cold hands, none can escape his grip once they are targeted, and for every target, there is a calling card.
If you are reading this, I regret to announce that I am dead. The morning that I write this letter, I noticed a peculiar mark on my left thigh. When a scribe was made to examine it, he recognized the language as one of the many dead dialects of the Elvish tongue, and as I heard such a thing my heart sank. News had spread to me that other kings had also been given such a brand- the brand of the King Slayer. If I am not mistaken, this means that I will soon part from this world.
Now, I send you this letter because I've taken notice to some of your work, and you seem competent. You shall journey to the barracks of Fort Steelyell, a converted ancient dwarven surface encampment. There, you will be with several other young adventurers, not unlike yourself, hand-picked by me. Once you have all been given a chance to greet yourselves, you will be given instruction by one of my sons.
King Paul III
Marshaling your thoughts as well as your gear, you open the door and head into the sunrise, towards a new adventure.
The game has two rules:
This is the stuff you positively need to read before making a character!
1. I'm perfectly fine with powerful characters as I do see it as an aspect of fantasy gaming. In fact, I expect you to make characters who are somewhat competent in at least their own profession. These characters will, however, be given chances to 'level', so please leave a bit of room for improvement.
2. Don't make a character that is too versatile. If you make a character, include a list of known spells or at the very least a clear focus, theme, or motif for the character's powers so that they can't pull solutions out of thin air- that way it leaves room for every character to shine.
Apart from that, just don't godmod or metagame. If there is information your character should know but no one else should, I will PM you.
The first part of the game takes place on a peninsula on the northern part of a continent. It has a very cold climate with a long winter, but there are warm summers there as well. The state itself is more or less old, however doesn't host very many settlements though there are various elvish ruins scattered about. Because of how far north it is as well as the bordering mountains, there is very little immigration. Much of the nation's commerce takes place in its southernmost parts, specifically in the border and seaside towns. The peninsula is composed mostly of forest and mountain. Because of this, the nation makes a living either by subsistence farming or trade.
