Hey guys I'm looking to start a long-term roleplay set in JK Rowling's Harry Potter Universe. It will be canon with the series and will take place in present day (09/2013) where more than a decade has past since the events surrounding Harry Potter and Voldermort. We'll be playing first year students at Hogwarts who meet and become friends similar to how the trio do in the films. We do not however have to be in the same house. In fact it might it would be interesting if we weren't because it tests our friendships from the start. For the most part this would be a slice of life roleplay staged at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. There's plenty of room for a host of interesting characters which we can create and build together.
Concerning the over-arcing plot I think it would be wise to stay away from the plot structures of the books. They are great 'who-dunnits' which work due to the way Rowling wrote the books. However, and I say this from experience, having a series of life threatening events happen to our characters will likely make them paranoid wrecks.
I'm looking for two other roleplayers to join me in this adventure (with potential for a fourth is the interest/quality of entrants is there)
Possible IRC Chat
I would also like to put forward the idea of having an IRC chat now and again so our characters can interact without the time gap between posts. Say they go to have some drinks in Hogsmeade and talk about the events in the story which have happened to them. This isn't a must I just thought it would be a neat idea.
Canon Versus Non-Canon
I've done a roleplay in the HP Universe before (it was a big success) and we decided to have it be non-canon with the series. This gave us room to create a whole load of characters, but also restricted us from using many of the names and places associated with many of the canon-cast. My preferred method to roleplay in the HP World would be to have it be canon but stay away from most of the original cast (crucially Harry, Ron and Hermione) out of respect for JK's characters.
Concerning the Tone and Our Characters
What I love most about the series isn't Quidditch or the spells -- it's the characters. These brilliant, flawed characters who live and breathe on the page because they're not perfect. They're (relatively) normal people thrown into extraordinary situations. This means I have little interest in a character which is a two-dimensional super model who has a fixation on sulking and having sex. I'm going to do my best to create a character which is separate from myself with a different belief system and outlook on life -- someone who gets things wrong and isn't simply an avatar for myself.
I hope to hear from you soon (assuming I haven't scared you away!).
edit: Please fill out this CS sheet. Remember your character should have some flaws which leaves room for the other players (your friends) to make up for them. If everyone is perfect and the same things get boring real fast. Consider the dynamic between Harry, Ron and Hermione.
