Hey, I'm new here and I thought I'd pitch this idea I've had for a while here. Let me know what you guys think and hopefully we can get this thing going!
In the year 2041, the human race has all but destroyed itself through warring nations. As various alliances began to form, the world became a battlefield between the West and the East, the true war to end all wars: WWIII. Just when the two sides were about to come to a peace agreement, something terrible happened. Something so cataclysmic that the world would never be the same.
June 25th, 2048: The day life on Earth as we know it came to an end. On this day, a satellite in low orbit around the Earth called "The Dark Star" -containing over two dozen nuclear warheads- inexplicably malfunctioned and came crashing down to the Earth's surface. The resulting explosion, originating in Siberia, had devastating long term effects on the globe. The U.S.A. was immediately blamed because it was their satellite, and the war continued until little was left of either side. By this time nearly every first-world nation is completely devoid of social structure, let alone government. One month later, the world's estimated total population dipped under 1 billion due to the vast amount of radiation spreading across the globe. This event, called Armageddon in The Bible, is now simply referred to as "The End" due to the collapse of organized religion.
The current year is 25 A.E. (2073 A.D.), two and a half decades after "The End". The Earth is still covered in dark clouds that block out the sun, and Earth is experiencing a perpetual winter. What's left of the Human race has since picked itself up and restarted in Europe, Africa and the Americas. Much of Northern Asia is inhospitable due to intense radiation that still pours out from the impact zone. As the humans continue to survive, there is still a lack of a true social order or government. Public services such as schools and hospitals are still being rebuilt, but the law is carried out by vigilantes who make the rules themselves. Most people live by the bare minimum, fending for their families and themselves only.
One generation later, a sub-species of human has emerged, possessing special abilities. Those who have these abilities are a minority among ordinary humans, and are feared for their extraordinary powers. For this reason, they are named "Shades", in reference to their genetic origin in the mutation resulting from Dark Star Radiation. Now having blended in to human society, the Shades mostly keep their abilities hidden from the world for fear pf persecution. Some, however use their powers for their own selfish advances. And one would use his own to force what remains of human life bend to his will. All he needs is time, so long as no-one opposes him...
