The figure walked down the foggy late-night road, and all the spirits followed. The grasses of the field bent in the wind, the trees whispered; owls provided a symphony and the bats stalked it. All followed eagerly, yet none drew near as the figure wakled across the wet grass toward the leafless, unassuming autumn tree. Yes, this was the spot, the focal point. Here, the leylines conjoined, their energy beating out from this heart, one of the greatest in the world. Were one to look under this person's low hood and see in that darkness, they would see it smile. It knelt down, and touched the trunk of the tree. At last, it was time.
The figure moved it's arm suddenly, and the earth, wood and rock flew with it. Again, it lowerd it's arm and quickly flung it aside and the things of the world followed like puppets on a string. It continued, each time blasting a little less away, until the hole was as deep as the small, mostly-dead tree. A deep ringing, more felt than heard, came from the bottom, thuding loudly. With each moment, it beat faster. The figure stopped, and pulled out a shiny, modern watch from the pocket of it's robe. Less than a minute now; exactly on time.
The figure began to descend into the hole, reserving as much as its strength as possible. It landed quietly, and looked to the translucent shape, fading at the end of each beat and strengthening with at each beginning. It was almost materialized now.
The figure raised both arms outstretched forward, focusing. It would take all it had to give to open it, to break it open. To set the world down its destined path.
The internet-synced watch clicked, synced to atomic time. It was far less exact than what it required. Still, it was helpful in a vague manner.
The figure breathed in rhythmically, matching itself to the beating heart of energy.
A cool energy began to coalesce around the palms of the figure, and it began to hum an ancient sound.
The energy became palpable, swirling around the figure's hands.
A storm blew throughout the pit, throwing the figure's hood off. The old, ancient man's long silver-white hair and beard flew wildly through the air.
Zero. It was time.
The old man released the energy, sending it into a frenzy. It ripped across the chest, pulling it open. A brilliant form, between liquid lightning and mist shone forth into the very weakest second of the veil, and ripped it apart.
It was done.
Similar figures did this the world over, breaking a seal over every heart of ley lines in the entire Earth that night.
On the first day of November, everything changed.
Four months ago, the world was revolutionized by the sudden onset of the supernatural. On the first day of November, 2014, claims of seeing supernatural or magical entities increased planetwide. It was viewed largely as a childish movement by youth and unhappy, mentally-unwell adults until the waves of recorded reports, photos and film footage amounted to a staggering supply of evidence. Every day, dozens of reports come in of children jumping off of roofs and flying, of robbers melting walls with fire from their hands and covens of Wiccans suddently summoning real, breathing demons and slaughternig entire neighborhoods across the globe. The numbers of cases suggest that several thousand people globally have manifested these abilities-and these are only the ones that have randomly discovered them.
These abilities all reflect the inner nature of the people granted them; their loves and dreams, their shadows and sins. Each seems to be a metaphor for the strongest characteristics of each individual, a physical metaphor for who they truly are. For this reason, they are called totems, familiars and the like.
The media ignores these events as much as possible. Governments have treated them with mixed resopnses, from acceptance and welcome to detainment on the grounds that they are full-fledged terrorists and even execution, even within the same nation. Religious orders have become divided over the issue, some believing them to be miracles, others evil magic and more still considering it a case-by-case basis. A facade of calm ensures business as usual for most of the 1st world nations as the environment and economy plunge ever-downward as before, now only a little hastened by a supernatural phenomenon... until, at least, the hunger takes hold.
The beings with these powers are, generally, said to be fueled by the energy that is the very essence of souls. While an individual's own soul is a limitless wellspring for such energy, replacing what is depleted by using these abilities, this leaves a small, quickly depleted source and leaves the user with a craving for energy. As a person uses the abilities more and become more skillful, even when restored, their hunger ever grows, and the tinges of madness seep into them. Those of a darker mindset, or further down the path of insanity, hunt down others with these abilties, those whose souls have grown stronger from use just as a muscle does, murders them, and devours their very soul, breaking it apart and absorbing it into their own; their capacity of and ability to restore it's energy is enhanced with it, invigorating the soul permanently. This situation, a calm few number of such beings, heralds a storm to come.
Alliances and organizations of such people are beggining to form, some bound to corporations and governments, others entirely independant. Their purposes vary as much as the people who comprise them do, from collections of soul hunters, to protecting those gifted from the prejudice of 'normal' people and the hunger of the gifted, to merely a new form of book club centered around being 'special.'
There are rumors of a few who knew this was going to happen, of some ancient, occult group that actually instigated it. The truth on the matter, as on most, is scarce of late.
Only as gossip is the overarching truth said aloud; yet, it is thought and known by all, however much they deny it. The world is changing underneath the surface. The economic, political and environmental balance were already upset to a degree unknown in recorded human history, threatening to send the world down the path of it's own destruction. That were as a gentle spring rain next to this world-destroying cyclone, as though the whole of the earth should be flooded, the ground cracked open, and the sky itself fall. A war unlike any other whispers on the horizon. A war where the story of human hate, fear, sorrow, joy, compassion and love comes to the critical point, its moment of epic climax as the question of who and why we are and do comes to perhaps its final answer.
Who are you? Why are you here? What do you create?
What's in your soul?
Of Souls and Dreams
Welcome to Of Souls and Dreams, a dark urban/modern fantasy/supernatural setting where people have begun manifesting supernatural, magican and psychic abilities as extensions of their own souls. This rp takes elements of mythology, and works like Heroes and Darker than Bkack along with fighter games such as Mortal Kombat, Soul Calibur and so on. This will not be strictly combat-focused though; in fact, story and dialogue is generally desired more than combat here. The story of this rp begins on the first day of March, 2015.
At the end of 2014, on the night where cultures around the world said since ancient times the veil between this world and the others was thinnest, that veil was broke. In the following weeks, thousands of humans have began manifesting seemingly impossible abilties, such as flying, shapeshifting, telekinesis, the ability to use magic, telepathy, and so on. Those 'chosen' are seemingly random, though there powers are not; the power always is a reflection, a metaphor, for the innate character of that person, like a totem in New Age thought.
These abilties cannot be used wantonly, however; their activation, their fuel source, is the excess energy of the user's own soul, which, while always able to be restored, can only offer a limited amount in a single use. The further developed these powers become and the more they are used, the greater a craving for energy their user has, along with the onset of slight to full psychosis.
Along with, or perhaps as a natural result of this, some darker, more ruthless individuals, have taken to hunting down others these abilties, people with a seeming naturally faster-restorying soul, and kill them. They then eat the slain's soul, adding to their own the ability to hold more energy and speedening the rate at which theirs is restored. As time passes, the hunger and desire for power overtakes more and more people, and open battles between these parties are becoming increasingly common, the victor more and more likely as time marches on to claim the loser's soul.
The world, already on the verge of economic, political and environmental collapse as it was at the time of 2013, has now had a supernatural element thrust onto it-an unstable one. An already predicted World War III now seems much more inevitable, and much more dangerous, and much closer than before. Alliances are beginning to form and others struggle to claim souls, stay alive, or live life as much like as before as possible, some using their power exclusively for recreation. Player's are free to choose the aims of their characters.
Requests and rules
I have no qualms about the length of your posts so long as the writing itself is of good quality, provided you maintain the standards for being an Advanced RP.
This rp will take on very dark tones; be prepared for it.
As this is a public thread, profanity must be used sparingly. I have no issue with such language; such is the rules of this site, though.
If you wish to include such things as smut or other dissallowed by forum rules material, you are welcome to do so in pms. Get express consent from all players you are seeking such with beforehand every time.
Character's will die. While you may make a case to have them kept alive, be aware of the real possiblity of them dying.
As many people as are interested and contribute to the rp are welcome.
I reserve the right to ask people to leave the rp when they are being repeatedly and destructively offensive or seriously harming the flow of the rp.
No character may have a power that another has had; there are no duplicates.
I may add or delete rules to this list as necessary.
The character sheet is as follows (relax, this is pretty simple and won't require constant revision)
Name: give the character's full name and any nicknames/aliases. Update as necessary.
Age: I think you know what to put here. Update as the story goes on.
Gender: I think you know what to put here.
Appearance: either a written description or picture. A combiniation is particularly welcome. Update as the story goes on.
Personality: a description of the character's personality. This should be at least a few paragraphs, describing what, how and why they are they way they are. Include their goals, likes and dislikes, fears and loves here, along with how their power reflects their personality. Update this as the story goes on.
Biography: this need not be a full biography, at certainly not at the time of character creation. What is needed is a story of how and why the character came to be where they are at present time, probably including a few major life events and brief synopsis of the last few months before the last November and since then, including the details around their power manifesting.
Powers: There will be a list of keywords that can combined, along with an explanation of them below.
Health: This game will make slight use of points. Unless a person's power increases it, all people have 3 hit points.
Powers are the supernatural and normal abilties a character has, ranging from controlling Fire to being a world-class mathmetician. A character gets several keywords from the list below. This system is mainly here to balance powers and give some measure of numbers to competitions, making combat not purely a contest of only outwrighting the other to death, regardless of strength.
Characters select keywords from the list below and add them to their character sheet, gaining the items, skills or powers associated with that keyword. For example, a character with the keyword Kinesis (Fire) can psychically control and move fire, and a character with Summoning can open small portals, summoning other objects and living things to them.
In addition, a character can turn one of their keywords into a descriptor of one of their other keywords, altering and strengthening it. For example, a character takes Weapon (Sword) and adds Enchanted Item (Lightning) to it; the character now has Enchanted Item (Lightning)-Weapon (Sword), a lightning sword unique and fully usueable only by them.
Powers also have 'ratings', indicating how strong that ability is, with 1 being the default, each descriptor on a power, it increases by 1. For Example, the power Weapon (Sword) is 1 Weapon (Sword) 1 on it's own. When Enchanted Item (Lightning) is added as a descriptor to it, it becomes Enchanted Item-Weapon (Sword) 2. If another descriptor is added to it, it becomes 3, and so on.
Power Levels indicate various amounts of strength. The average capability with most life skills is 0 or 1.
A power level of 1 indicates: a weapon deals 1 damage, such as a sword dealing a decent blow; a tlekinetic throwing a full-grown man across a room; a summoner could summon supernatural beings of the strength of a few men.
A power level of 2 indicates: A weapon deals 2 damage, such as a sword nearly cleaving completely through a human, a telekinetic thrusting several men flying; a summoner conjuring creatures such as ghosts and monsters.
A power level 3 indicates: a weapon deals 3 damage, such as a sword ripping through a most men, killing them instantly; a telekinetic able to send cars several dozen feet; a summoner bringing forth mighty demons, fey and towering monstrosities.
A power level of 4 indicates: a weapon dealing 4 damage, such as a sword cleaving right through even armor in one fell swoop; a telekinetic creating raging tornados of pschic force; a summoner conjuring demon lords and the mightier creatures of muth.
Each character has four keywords. Up to three keywords may be used instead as descriptors; at least one must be a base power on it's own. Alternatively, all four may be stand-alone keywords, giving versatility, though less power with each one. For example, a character takes the four: Enchanted Item (Fire), Weapon (Sword), Kinesis (Fire), Athletics. He selects Fire as a descriptor of Weapon (Sword) on his character sheet, meaning one of his powers is an enchanted, fiery sword, and is good at using it. From his remaining two, he designates both Urgy (Fire) and Athletics as powers on their own, meaning his complete list of powers is: Enchanted Item (Fire)-Weapon (Sword) 2, Kinesis (Fire), Athletics.
How these abiltites are triggered, I leave to the player's, though there must be a trigger, and I must accept it. Triggers can include such things as incanting, making hand signs, concentrating for a moment, or some other tic or habit. I also am relying on the player's to come up with the limitations/weakness of their powers on their own.
If you have a request/suggestion for another keyword, I invite and welcome you to state it.
