There are two truths universally known in the world of Dys: That all of humankind is held hostage by the whims of the Idols, and that the only true hope for humanity's salvation is in the inevitable end of their world. Despite these bleak truths though, humanity has persevered and even thrived.
Throughout all of recorded history there have always been Idols in Dys. They persist in the records of all cultures and despite these cultures' vastly disparate starting points, the accounts of the Idols are largely the same; Strange items that hold great and horrific power. Those who have come into contact with the Idols are affected in strange and incurable ways. The Idols have taken a large role in modern culture and an elaborate system of business and ceremony has been constructed around the quest for and possession of these items. Countries war with each other over stolen Idols, and byzantine guilds persist over all civilization, influencing the quests for the Idols to meet their own ends. The primary faith of the world holds the Idols as an unfortunate reality that humanity is meant to overcome in some fashion and many of the Dys's governments focus on the Idols in some capacity.
The most important portion of the Idols for our story however, is the Quest. Over time, the Idols cycle in and out of the possession of political entities and back into their natural state. When this occurs, an international summit is convened to signal the beginning of a new Quest to obtain the items again. There is much ceremony and procedure involved in the collection of the Idols and the proceedings of the Quest to find them. Certain nations are allowed first pick of the Idols they wish to acquire based on historical precedent or recent treaties. In addition, guilds are held to their own standards of operation based on International Treaties governing their operation.
When a nation is ready for its Quest, the pertinent government nominates a group of individuals to be Hunters. Hunters function as something of a combination of diplomats, investigators, mercenaries and pariahs all in one. All Hunters are people who have previously been touched in some fashion by the Idols and so are more keen to their stirrings. When a person has contact with an Idol in any sort of controlled manner, they have their name added to a conscription list making them eligible to become Hunters; this serves a duel function of dissuading the populace from seeking the power of the Idols while also eliminating any unusable citizens as only those who have been touched by the Idols are able to locate them again on Quests, but their extrasensory prowess comes at a cost. The more one has been in contact with the Idols, the less human they become. Slowly a person who has made use of the Idols powers will lose their sanity, their body, and their free will until finally they are consumed by the Idols and made into a sort of servant to them, a being known as a Grasp who is entirely given over to the demands of the mysterious items.
The Quest has been going on for fourteen months now and as per the edicts set forth at the beginning of this cycle, it is time for the landlocked city-state of Anaya to begin their Quest for the chosen Idol; the 'Bottle'. Anaya's governor, Maya Atan, has conscripted a group of Hunters to seek the Bottle, which is believed to be either in Anaya or the surrounding states that comprise the country of Olessa. You are one of these Hunters and you are about to embark on a quest with a possibility of great power, but with great risks along the way. This is your duty to your country, as well as your opportunity.
(Just so you are aware, the general setting of this is modern-day technology levels. Magic does not exist outside of the Idols).
Nationality: (For the purpose of this first RPG we will say all characters are Olessa natives)
Appearance: (What does your character look like? Feel free to use describe your appearance using a picture though words are appreciated just as well because I think we all have a bit of a variation on an appearance in our heads)
Outfit: All Hunters are fitted with a collar while on their Quest so as to identify them as such. Apart from the collar, your character's outfit(s) help to describe what they are like and what kind of person they are outside of their Quest.
Job: (What did your character work as before they were drafted?)
Visions: (All those who have had contact with one of the Idols will occasionally receive visions pertaining to a particular topic. These visions will mostly happen during sleep but as a Hunter becomes more dependent on an Idol, the visions can begin to intrude on their waking life. Visions are informative but almost never pleasant).
Talents: (What are some things your character is talented at?)
Trinkets: (What items is your character bringing with them on their Quest? Money is provided for by the Government but any personal effects your Hunter wishes to have need to be brought at the start because you will likely not be allowed to return home until your mission is complete).
Personality: (Generally, what is your character's personality like? Are they amiable? Caustic? any descriptors you feel are appropriate are welcome here.)
Preferences: (What are your character's likes and dislikes?)
Ambitions: (What are your character's dreams, hopes, and aspirations?)
Trauma: (What drove your character to seek an Idol in the first place? Remember that each character has had some contact with an Idol and felt a taste of the power they can afford, but only a small taste at a time. What was their experience like and what did they hope to achieve by seeking the Idol?)
Relationships: (Does your character have any friends or family?)
Background: (What is your character's background? Be as detailed or as mysterious as you like here, though give some indication that tries to tie things together. The government does not do extensive background checks on their Hunters.)
Any questions before we begin? There is some stuff I'm leaving out to be revealed as the game gets going and this is intended to be the first of several RPG's set in Dys. I hope anyone who joins will have a good time.
