Name: Daniel Reed
Cosplay: The (10th) Doctor, Doctor Who
Bio: Daniel’s backstory doesn’t stray too far from your average convention goer – save for one important detail. He is not outgoing, he is not obsessive nor much of a collector, and therefore, not really your stereotypical geek. He is mainly pretty mild and laid back in most things he does.
It’s not that a more eccentric nature was ever suppressed in him as a child, just never brought out. He grew up as an only child in an upper middle class family – not quite rich or spoiled but in a family with enough money to go around that he got many of the things he wanted as a kid. However, that was not a privilege he often exploited, and he was rather quiet about his interests. He liked reading, including some comics and manga, and tried some video game titles from time to time but not enough to get really into them as a whole, and became quite a sci-fi fan, but he would never call himself really into something no matter how much he actually liked it. He just wasn’t the obsessive type.
His school life could almost be considered lonely, though he was strangely content with it. In grade school, he had few friends simply on the basis that there were few people who shared his interests. He was never really bullied or picked on for being the school nerd, per se, he just didn’t have a lot to talk about with other people. In high school he was a bit luckier, meeting a circle of friends with a similar mindset as him and expanding his interests somewhat, as they exchanged quite a few good titles between each other when they came across something worth sharing. Speaking of which, while none of them had seen the original series, they had all heard about the Doctor Who reboot coming out at about that time, so they watched the series together episode by episode as each one aired, making it one of Daniel’s favorite TV shows to date.
It wasn’t until after he graduated high school and his old friends began to drift away that he learned about conventions. Considering he was more of the quiet type, he was a bit hesitant to go to any, but eventually gave one a try, attending Brookkon 2011. Amazed at the number of people, events and cosplays, and all the people just like him, he was eager to attend next year. That was when he decided he’d try cosplaying, and chose his favorite Doctor to start out with. The cosplay wasn’t hard to put together, a wig to cover up his ginger hair being the only part that was really a challenge to get his hands on, and he already owned a replica of the 10th’s screwdriver, so it looked pretty solid when he’d put the whole thing together for Brookkon 2012. He had some fun trying to tackle the Doctor’s personality and even his accent, although since he was not entirely able to get over his more timid nature, he was far from a perfect imitation. No matter, it was still enjoyable. He considered trying to cosplay someone new for Brookkon 2013, since he did have a much wider range of interests beyond the single show, but he had a busy year between the two conventions trying to find work, etc, so he never found the time to try something more complex like he wanted to, and recycled his Doctor cosplay. That was only a minor disappointment, though, as it was still just as fun an experience the second time around.
Other: Much to his regret, he never attended college, currently living in an apartment and, to quite an extent, living off of his parents’ money. For years they were supportive of him, giving him the money he needed until he could get a stable job, but since it’s been taking him longer than expected to get a grip on things, they’ve started to become annoyed with him in the past year or so, pressuring him further.
