A cloudy, white mist formed in front of Dave as he exhaled into the frigid winter air.
No, frigid was putting it lightly. This kind of cold was on a completely different level from what Dave was used to; where he was from, the temperatures almost never reached below 0, and on the rare occasions when they did, he made sure to sit in the house with the heater turned up high. Of course then again, that was back when there was electricity…
That’s not to say that the house Dave had been staying in wasn’t warm however, quite the opposite; compared to the ‘deathly cold’ that was currently the outside, his house was heaven! It’s just that without heating, he still found himself needing to wear his coat indoors, or at least walk around with a cover. Still, while the house might not have been the best shelter from the cold, it did provide shelter from some of the… other elements.
Crunch. Crunch. Crunch.
Dave’s boots were making an especially annoying crunching sound with each step he took; most likely it had something to do with the thick white blanket that covered the ground beneath him. It didn’t matter really, as there didn’t seem to be anyone or any[I]thing[I] nearby to hear his footsteps, but that still didn’t change the fact that it was bothering him.
He would be home soon though, and once he got there, he wouldn’t need to spend any more time walking through the stuff for at least another few days. Heck, he wouldn’t have needed to have been walking through it now if he didn’t have such terrible luck.
Who falls down the stairs and cuts their forearm open anyway? Most people would be worried about broken arms or sprained ankles after a fall like that, but no, not him. His amazing luck had somehow allowed him to escape with nothing more than a gash the length of a playing card; which was funny, because he had actually been holding playing cards when he fell. Oh well, it could have been worse; at least now it was nearly healed, as it had been a bloody mess when he had first cut it open. There was that, plus the fact that it wasn’t nearly as deep as it probably could have been.
At any rate, he had found a new bandage and a bit of Neosporin in the last house, which he figured should be enough to prevent any infection. He would liked to have found some antibiotics just to have been on the safe side, but the nearby houses didn’t have any, and he didn’t want to wander into town if he could help it. That place was just way too crowded nowadays, and not with the nice kind of folks either.
