It was a rare moment of peace in the watchtower; it seemed that everyone was either away, on missions, or simply asleep in their quarters. Either way, Diana appreciated the solitude. She took a drink from the steaming mug in her hand, and sighed. The entire universe seemed to be on display before her. Standing in front of the huge window on the observation deck, she was able to appreciate the countless number of stars out there, and countless planets revolving around those stars. Seeing that vast endlessness was almost enough to make an Amazon, a princess, a superhero adored by the public and feared by criminals, feel insignificant. Almost. At any rate, it was enough to take her mind off of the troubles that plagued her, even if just for a little while.
"Diana. You're back." The statement from just a few feet away was the first indicator that she was not alone. To this day, it still frustrated her that he could so easily get the jump on her. But, he wouldn't be Batman if he couldn't, she supposed.
"Observant as always, Bruce," Diana answered, the smallest of smiles gracing her lips. He didn't return it, but she didn't expect him to. It used to fascinate her, that cold look of his. Oh, the time that she spent wondering what was under that mask.
"I've asked you before to refrain from using my name on the station; not everyone here is aware of my secret identity, and I'd like to keep it that way," Bruce said. His tone softened just the tiniest fraction as he continued with, "How are things on Themyscira?"
Diana looked away, back towards the endless abyss before them. "Better. There are a few left here and there, but the island and surrounding sea have been purged as far as we can tell." She'd been home for the last month, helping deal with a group of demon-like creatures that seemed to be attacking the island from the sea. They didn't think it was Hades again; who it was, they hadn't a clue. Whoever was responsible, the situation had been contained. For now. At any rate, being gone, she'd missed an important meeting with the other founding members. "Nevermind that, though. How did the meeting go? Who will prepare Robin for his full membership with the League?"
Bruce shifted, uncomfortably. "That's actually what I wanted to come and talk to you about."
Diana figured that the job would go to Shayera; that's who she'd have suggested, would she have been present. The other woman had trained plenty of new recruits before; she was excellent at showing them the ropes and keeping them out of trouble while they learned. Diana had the utmost respect for the other woman, and knew she could be trusted with the Bruce's ex-ward. It was funny to think, now, of the animosity that had existed between the two women in the time following the Thanagarian invasion. Over the past few years, they'd become close friends.
"Why? Worried? I'm sure that she'll do-"
"Diana, it's you," He interrupted. If she'd been taking a sip when he said it, she was sure that she would have choked on it. For now, she merely gave him a wide-eyed look of shock.
" She asked. She didn't even realize that she'd been an option. Even after all of this time, she was terrible at dealing with all of the red tape that surrounded their work to ensure that they didn't step on any governmental toes. She still occasionally butted heads with the other members over her tendency towards using violent solutions over more peaceful ones, and the diplomatic issues occasionally raised due to her temper. Sure, she'd had Cassandra as her sidekick for a little while, but trying to keep the girl out of trouble hampered her work more than anything. Cassandra had made much more progress as a hero after joining the auxiliary group to which the League deferred most younger heroes. "But, why?"
"You're an excellent leader. You can help him improve his fighting abilities. And he already knows and respects you, more than the other Leaguers."
"Not more than you," She countered, crossing her arms. It wasn't that she didn't want to train him. She liked the kid well enough, and she knew that he wouldn't make too much trouble for her. But she just wasn't sure if she was the best option.
"The two of us have had some... Conflicts, recently. We all agreed that it would be in his best interests if it weren't me who trained him. The vote for you to do it was unanimous. I just wanted to ask you to..." The man trailed off, and turned to look towards the window. A deep frown was set on his face. Diana put one hand on his shoulder.
"I'll keep him safe. Don't worry." She leaned in to... To hug him, or maybe something more? Not that it mattered. He pulled away from her, using one firm hand to remove hers from his shoulder.
"Diana... No." He turned away. "That was all I wanted to talk to you about. Make sure to get some rest. Robin will be arriving on station to receive his room assignment at 08:00 hours; I imagine you'll want to talk things over with him and do an evaluation before taking him on any missions." And, like that, he was gone. Although she hadn't expected him to be receptive, it still hurt a bit. They'd had an on-and-off sort-of relationship since founding the League, four years ago. Yet, every time they'd get too close, he would push her away; saying that it was dangerous for them to be together, that it would distract them, that he couldn't have a relationship like that. Then, something would happen. One of them would have a close call on a mission, he'd get jealous of a man getting too close to her, or they'd just be in a situation where they spent too much time together. They'd get close, then too close, and then the whole cycle would start again. To be honest, she was getting tired of it.
The next morning, at approximately 08:30, she was walking towards the non-founder living quarters. Many went unused; some because they did not have any inhabitants, and others because the person who used them spent most of their time living on on Earth. Diana herself alternated between the two, but she'd decided to live primarily in the watchtower while training Robin. She came to his room -59- and knocked on the door. "Robin? It's Diana. Settled in yet?"
