~Two days after the soul wielders disappeared~
“Your Grace, we have received word that Barclay has dispatched some sort of platoon across the Syran Mountains.”, Alberte Hardison reported as he rose to his full height, “There are at least one-hundred men, but knowing that barbarian they are possibly a diversion to weaken whatever force we send to handle them.” Baount festered over the information his General had just relayed to him, “My father once told me stories of Mirren Barclay‘s exploits as a child.” The man started reminiscing, “He chained together countless criminals who went mad from bring thrown into the Pit. After arriving at their destination they would be released from their shackles and wreak havoc on the surrounding villages.”, letting out a heavy sigh, “Even for average men they could eliminate whole armies. However, even Barclay cannot control these monsters. They will kill anything and anyone who crosses their path, no matter if they are friend or foe; the Chain Riders.”
~Day Three ~
“Lord Baount, we have received confirmation that these men crossing the mountains are shackled together.”, Alberte reported to his king, “What should we do? If they are as formidable as you make them sound a flat out battle might weaken us even further.” The king’s hand turned into a fist resting upon his throne’s arm as he answered his General, “Send word to Hallifore to head south. She should be able to handle them with little trouble.” The General nodded as he left the throne room.
“My Liege, we are receiving reports of villages going up in flames and others being torn to the ground in the middle of the night.”, the older gentleman looked to his leader awaiting a response. “It seems my father‘s stories ring true.”, the king replied solemnly, “Prepare a squadron of men to advance south, we must stop these creatures at any cost.” Alberte nodded as he signaled for his men to send word that they were to leave at once.
“We seemed to have successfully routed the entirety of the Chain Riders… although we have suffered many casualties.”, the General looked to the ground before returing his sights to Baount, “We have lost five more villages since Rosemeisters sneak attack and many of our outposts near the Syran Mountains are shorthanded due to those beasts.” As he finished a sweet voice chimed in, “Of course, if it wasn‘t for me these fools would‘ve lost their lives. Lucky for them I was able to make it back so soon.”, Elizabeth entered the throne room marking her first public appearance. “Although, a few of those criminals managed to escape by sacrificing their allies, those are the cowards you would have me face. Have I angered you My Majesty?”, the young girl asked with genuine sincerity in her voice.
“Hallifore is back on route to Ki‘oure, she should arrive three days from now.”, Alberte reported, “What should we do about the attack from Barclay?” The king rose to his feet and dismissed the guards in the throne room, when are were gone he answered his General, “I have heard that someone matching Jackson‘s description has been spotted in Aurenstruass. He knows full well that Barclay is the reason for many of his country men‘s deaths and I am sure he will not turn a blind eye to that.”, a sinister grin forming on his face. General Hardison’s expression quickly turned to surprise before returning to normal, “That may be so, but he killed Caine and the men he spared spoke of his ambition to kill you. Do you honestly believe he would kill a potential ally for the sake of some worthless peasants?” Baount continued to smile, “I believe he will do what is in the best interest of Renaz. Your family‘s loyalty is unquestionable in that field.”
