Slowly the phone rattled its way over the nightstand, humming over half-finished sheet music and parts of a psychology thesis. It danced along the edge, dutifully sounding out the alarm over and over, despite being blatantly ignored by its owner. With one final ring, it toppled over, pulling the stack of papers and an empty bottle onto the lump under the covers. Groaning and muttering angry threats under his breath, the ebony-haired man poked his head out from under the blanket and groped about for the device, scattering papers and books onto the floor in the process. Once firmly in his grasp, he brought the obnoxiously bright screen to his face and squinted blearily at it for a few seconds before the upside-down numbers on it made sense. “Oh fuck, it’s on silent again!”
Throwing the covers off, he stumbled over his guitar and lunged for the dresser, snatching out his favourite jeans and a jersey tee. He swore as he scrambled to get dressed and ran his fingers painfully though his tangled hair, muttering to himself between choice slurs. After shoving assorted books and papers he hoped was for his class into a messenger bag, he snatched up his keys and darted out of the apartment. He made it to the next floor down before realizing the metal stairs were quite cold. Looking down to his feet, he let out a frustrated sound and knocked his head on the wall before running back upstairs to shove on some boots. Finally, he was on his way to class.
“So you do care about us, Mr. Pentlocke!” Ren nearly winced as his supposedly stealthy entrance through the back door of the auditorium was fully noticed by not only the professor, but now the whole class. With an amused and arrogant smile, the professor set down his text book and gave a sweeping gesture with his hand. “Well, come on down, have a seat. We have one reserved just for you here in the front.” He said, voice polite but obviously teasing. After seriously debating on slinking quietly back out the door, Ren shrugged to himself and put on a half smile before walking down the central stairs.
“So tell us, Mr. Pentlocke, what kept you this time?” The Professor asked, casually leaning on the table in front of the student. Knowing all eyes were on him, the brunette gave a more genuine, almost cheeky smile and stood by his designated seat. “Well, Sir, all this talk of time and its effects on the mind had to take its toll at some point.“ A smatter of giggles and chuckles broke out over the room, and the professor gave a small smile before retorting.
“And I am sure it was a precognitive thought of the time-space loop that caused you to be late all the other evenings, Eh, Pentlocke? “ The older man folded his arms in front of his chest, the skeptic frown on his features doing little to hide his amusement.
“What can I say? It runs in the family.” Ren said nonchalantly as he slid into the chair and let his bag slide off his shoulder, his comment earning more than a few snorts and laughs from the rest of the students. The professor shook his head as he fought not to break out into another, slightly exasperated smile. It was no secret that the grounded man disapproved of everything in the oft-mocked parapsychology field, though he was typically playful about it. Ren found it rather refreshing, really.
“Alright then, Pentlocke, why don’t you go ahead and tell us what today’s focus is?”
“Uh.” He gave a pause, pale eyes flicking up to the disappointingly blank blackboard. “E-emotions… and… brain stuff?” He offered hopefully as he ran a hand through his partially knotted hair. Honestly, even he was disappointed with the reply but hey, one can only be so witty when their mind is still half asleep. Amidst the laughter, the professor let out a sigh.
“Ren, this is a psychology class, we always focus on the brain and human psyche." He said as he pushed off from the table and picked up the book he had been reading from. “However, you get an ‘E’ for effort… as well as for extra studies.” Ren groaned and sunk back into his chair. Bonus papers while he had to chase down a poltergeist this weekend. Peachy.
