(TwinkleMoon + DoctorPiper) School Taboo - This Isn't Supposed to Happen [IC]
The alarm blared at 6 AM, waking Skyler Graham from her very deep, relaxing sleep. She took a minute to force her eyes open before she groaned softly as she turned over to turn off her alarm. Once off, she lay in bed a bit longer before putting on her glasses and sitting up. Skyler stumbled out of bed and took the next hour getting ready for school. Her mother said hello to her as she walked into the kitchen.
"Do you have time for breakfast this morning, dear?" her mother asked, pushing around bright yellow yolks in the pan on the stove.
"Yeah, Mama, I have time." Skyler put her bag on the back of a chair and sat down, filling her glass with the juice sitting on the table waiting for her. She and her mother had a nice, short breakfast together. They never had to have an actual conversation to enjoy each other's company. It was relaxing for Skyler to feel so at home, the complete opposite of how she felt at school. Once she finished eating, she stood, picked up her bag, slung it over her shoulder, and hugged her mother before grabbing her keys and going out to her car.
Skyler sighed before she turned her key in the ignition and drove off towards hell.
Skyler walked into the school building, and as she headed towards her locker, she already heard scoffing and whispering. Everyone always talked about her, and she genuinely did not understand why. She was normal. She knew that. She was just quiet.
First period went by pretty much the same. So did second...third...then came lunch. Finally. Lunch was the only time Skyler really got a break. She was able to sit and talk with her friends and actually be somewhat happy at school. She loved her friends so much. They were family to her, loved her, and stuck up for her no matter what. She would have a friend in class here and there but rarely had the opportunity to interact with them in class, so lunch was always a breath of fresh air.
Lunch was over, and Skyler was heading to her fourth period class when she heard someone yell, "HEY, GRAHAM!" Before she could turn to see who it was, something flew in front of her, less than a foot away, and crashed into the small trophy case beside her. Skyler dropped her bag and jumped out of the way, frantically looking around to see who had thrown whatever the unknown object was and looking to make sure there wasn't any glass on or in her. She looked down and saw a stapler that looked like the kind most of the teachers had in their classrooms. Before she could completely process what was going on, she felt someone grab her arm. She looked up and saw the principal, who had a very stern, disappointed expression. "I don't know who..." Skyler's voice trailed off as she looked around and saw the hall was completely empty. Everyone had run away. "I...I didn't do this! I swear!" She frantically tried to convince Principal Sanders that she had no idea who did it, and that she had no part in it as he firmly led her towards his office.
Tears began to form in her eyes, and she felt like she was going to have a panic attack. What's worse, is she saw Ms. Ward, one of her teachers...her favorite teacher, watching in her classroom doorway...
Can you see it twinkling?
Kate's arm lazily raised into the air only to fall back down onto her alarm clock. Three times, that is, since she was way too tired to do it correctly the first. With a groan, she raised up on her bed and took a few seconds to allow her brain to process the fact she had just woke up. Kate wasn't exactly what you'd call an early riser, but she was doing it because she actually loved her job. And because she had no other choices, anyway. She first walked to the bathroom and once again realized what a mess she was in the morning. After taking no less than a good hour just for fixing her hair, Kate also took care of her teeth and make up before finally dressing up.
Kate had 27 years old, making her a young teacher when she would be compared to her colleagues. She had beautiful green eyes and brown hair. Kate never complicated things, and it was no different regarding her hair. She kept them falling down on her back and was lucky enough to have been gifted with the perfect hair for such behavior as they did not require much treatment to look this smooth. Overall, Kate was a beautiful woman. That is what she loved to think based on what people said and how they looked at her. Her breakfast, if it could be called that, was kept to a minimum as always. She grabbed her keys and helmet before heading out. Kate was a young teacher and had been lucky to get a permanent post this soon in her career, especially for a History teacher such as herself. Nevertheless, she always had been quite the rebel and that never changed. There was no requested uniforms at the school and while she was bound to look professional, Kate always managed to keep that look about her. Tight leather jacket, black leather boots, jeans and a good looking top to wear for work. The shirt only partly hid the tatoo she had on the arm, a deadly looking snake going up her arm. To top it all, she had no car but was driving a Japanese motorbike. She was not living particularly close to the school, so it would take her about an hour to reach it. A lot of students would talk about her due to all of these little details, they gave her some sort of respect. It made her job easier. There was the occasional bully, but these brats were hardly worth the head ache.
Once properly woke up, Kate was actually lively and sweet to almost anyone. She would walk, in a hurried manner, to her classroom taking the time to wave and say hello to anyone with whom she'd make eyes contact. She was the type of professor that showed up at the last minute each time, barely having time to unlock the door before the bell rang. Her class were generally appreciated since she had this funny attitude about her. She knew just how hard it could be to learn something while falling asleep. She would always fall asleep when in meeting with the Principal. The first periods went on without any incidents of any sort. A few minutes only before the next one would start however, a loud noise got her attention outside her classroom. No students were here yet, so Kate walked up to the door and leaned on the door frame. The glass of the trophy display was shattered on the ground. A girl was standing in front of it, facing the now angry looking Principal. Haha...Now of course a student would get in trouble for doing such a thing, what was she thinking. Though something was amiss. She knew that girl, it was one of her students. Skyler...Skyler Graham? Yes, if she recalled correctly. A quiet girl, in fact, not like her at all to break glasses. Innocence was written all over her face, how could the Principal be so stupid? Such things had a tendency to get to her, so Kate let out a big sigh as she advanced towards the duo now walking away.
''Principal.'' She said as she arrived right behind them. The man turned around. ''Sorry to disrupt, but I noticed what happened. She's one of my students and class will be starting in only a couple of moments. Let me take care of this trouble maker, no need to make her miss class for that.'' The old man looked partly shocked by the teacher's intervention and also partly angry.
''Ms. Ward, do you actually realize what happened here?''
''Yes.'' She answered.
''The glass was completely shattered!''
''Do you realize how much such a glass will cost the school?''
By that moment, Kate's arms were crossed. Her tone of voice was unshakable, and stripped of any doubts. It was as if she was to an idiot who was stating obvious facts, and maybe it was the case. The Principal paused, realizing the woman would not step aside. He finally sighed before continuing. ''Fine. Take care of this case, Ms. Ward, but you will fill out the necessary papers and contact her parents. Understood? There is no getting away from this, young Miss.'' The last part was, of course, addressed to Skyler. Kate waited a bit before turning to the girl. ''Come on now.'' She said, with a smile. ''Let's get to class.'' and nothing more was added.
The class went on as normal. There was only some exercise to be made, the rest of the time Kate would be talking about general stuff that would appear on the next exam. The bell rang soon enough, but Kate remained sitting on her desk in silence, waiting for the students to take their things and leave class. ''Not you, Miss Skyler. You remain here.'' The teacher suddenly said. Some students took a few looks at Skyler and Kate, but all left soon enough. Kate stood up and walked up to the girl, leaning with both hands on the desk she was sat at.
''So. Apparently you caused trouble this morning? You knew this was coming.'' Kate put a couple of papers on the girl's desk. It was some works and what not about History. ''You'll remain here and complete these before leaving. Consider this detention. Fill these out without any mistakes and you're free as soon as you're done. Use your manuals. If you need anything, I'll be at my desk.'' With that being said, Kate walked right back to her desk. The classes were over and no students would likely be coming into here now. Out of the blue, she put both legs onto her desk, getting comfortable in order to fill out a couple of papers she needed to. Including a letter to Skyler's parents.
Skyler turned around as she heard the voice. When she saw it was Ms. Ward, her heart immediately started beating faster. She felt nervous and mostly embarrassed. She felt like she was about to sob at this point, not just tears filling her eyes, but she pushed it back as best she could, feeling a huge lump in her throat as a result. Skyler wasn't listening completely to the rest of the conversation, she was too terrified of what was about to happen. She was also a bit too busy looking at Kate Ward. Skyler loved how she dressed, and the woman was beautiful. Ms. Ward was so much her own person that Skyler felt liberated just looking at her. Her jeans, her boots, her leather jacket...it was all just so...attractive. "Come on now. Let's get to class." The sound of Ms. Ward's voice shook Skyler out of her thought process. She opened her mouth slightly to respond, but all she could do was nod, an almost inaudible whimper accidentally escaping.
Skyler worked in class as best she could, trying to stay focused and not think about what just happened. She succeeded for the most part, her mind only wandering a few times. When class was over, Skyler gathered all of her stuff and began to trail out with the rest of the students. "Not you, Miss Skyler." Skyler froze. Her eyes widened. After a few seconds, which felt like an eternity, she turned and sat down in the nearest desk. Ms. Ward walked up to Skyler and put her hands on the desk. Skyler felt her face go warm, as a subtle scent of the teacher's hair wafted her way.
Skyler didn't say anything in response to Ms. Ward. She sat at the desk, doing her work like she was supposed to...except this time, it was a lot harder to focus than it was in class just a few moments ago. Skyler's gaze kept moving up to look at Kate. "Why did she intervene?" she thought. She was genuinely curious as to why this teacher interrupted the principal doing his job. This teacher out of all the others. The situation wasn't even affecting her in any way. Skyler was genuinely intrigued.
After she finished her work, Skyler took her time getting her stuff together. She stood up slowly, putting her bag on her shoulder. She gathered the papers on her desk and walked up to Ms. Ward. After handing the teacher her papers, Skyler turned to walk away...then she turned back around.
"Um...Ms. Ward. Why...I was just wondering um...Why did you stop Principal Sanders? I mean, don't get me wrong, I appreciate it. I didn't do it. I'm just wondering...why?" As she was speaking, she was kind of fiddling with the strap of her bag.
Can you see it twinkling?
Kate was filling out the necessary papers for Skyler parents, but she had no real intention of sending it in any way. From time to time, she would raised her head in order to keep an eye on the girl. She didn't say anything at all or ask any questions which was just like her. Actually, Kate had nothing to do really. She was just being stuck here due to her not being able to restrain herself from helping Skyler. Thinking about how she could be at home right now, taking things easy, Kate almost cursed herself for having such a big heart. She tried to keep her mind busy with small things such as checking over some papers or works students did another time, drawing random things on small papers or looking through a few stuff on the computer, but no matter what she was doing time was not going any faster. From the student point of view, it probably looked like she was working hard. The thought made her smile.
Finally, Skyler stood up and grabbed her things, dropping the papers on the teacher's desk before leaving. Kate gathered everything carefully and took a quick glance at what she done. Now she had to correct this to hand it back to Skyler, what a pain. Kate let out a sigh while standing up, about to leave. Turning around she realized her student was actually still in the classroom, looking at her. Kate looked confused and it showed in her eyes. Why would a student remain in detention longer than necessary? She listened to what Skyler had to say and it was followed by a silence from both of them. Kate immediately smiled and approached the girl until she could put a hand on her shoulder.
''Miss Graham, let's be serious here. You are a good student of mine and you never ever talk to anyone nor disrupt in any way the class. How could anyone truly even consider the fact that you possibly did what happened to that glass this afternoon? It's ridiculous. Don't mind the Principal. He needed someone to act as a scapegoat to keep what small authority he's got.'' She then went back to her desk to pick up a few things before leaving, Skyler's work included. As she directed the girl out of the classroom so she could lock the door, Kate continued. ''I am not an idiot and I noticed what happened. I might not have seen the person who dd the real deed, but if I did they'd be in trouble from messing with one of my best student.'' She said, smiling at Skyler as she pat her head in a friendly manner. She hoped to comfort the girl by saying these words. She was taken back to her own past when she was about her age. People used to bully her until she fought back. Kate never had been as passive as Skyler was and, looking back at her, there was no way this would work in her case. ''If ever it happens again, come see me, alright? I can't stand these things. Take care now, alright? See you tomorrow.'' And on this, Kate walked away towards the exit of school leading to the parking where her motorbike was waiting.
"Th-thank you, Ms. Ward. I'll definitely come to you if it happens again. I'm sorry if this has inconvenienced you in any way, but I really appreciate it. Thanks again, see you tomorrow." With that, Skyler and Kate parted ways. Skyler got in her car, drove home in silence, and arrived while her mother was cooking dinner.
"Hey, Mama," she said as she set down her stuff and walked into the kitchen. "Do you need any help?"
"Hey! Yes, please, thank you, honey," her mother replied before she instructed Skyler on what to do. While they worked, her mother asked her usual question, "How was school?"
This time, Skyler didn't give her usual answer. "It was...bittersweet." Her mother looked at her daughter and cocked her head in confusion. Skyler let out a long sigh, preparing herself to tell her mother what happened. "I almost got into a lot of trouble with Principal Sanders--but it's okay! Everything worked out just fine...thanks to Ms. Ward."
"Is that your Math teacher? The one with the short, curly, brown hair, huge old lady glasses, and permanently pursed lips?"
Skyler laughed and said, "No, Mom, Ms. Ward is my History teacher."
"Ahh, that's right. Alright, carry on."
"So...after lunch, when I was on the way to History, someone threw a stapler my way, and it crashed into the trophy case that was beside me...When Principle Sanders got there, everyone else was gone except for me. He started to take me to his office...when Ms. Ward stopped him." Skyler didn't notice at first, but she was smiling. "She had me stay after class and do some extra work as detention. But she believes me that I didn't do it, which is a huge relief."
"Oh honey, I'm glad you're okay...What does this mean, though? Is the punishment going to go farther?"
"I don't think so. I think Ms. Ward will stick up for me well enough to where I won't get in any more trouble. I just wish I knew who threw the stapler..."
Dinner was ready shortly after this conversation, and they both sat at the table, eating and talking about other things. Television shows, her brother, other members of their family, her mom's work, etc. When she was done eating, Skyler did her homework, took a shower, then watched some T.V. before bed. After putting her glasses down on her bedside table, she crawled into bed and surrounded herself in her large, warm comforter and sheets, burying her head in her pillow. She pulled her arms in close and curled up. Skyler took in a breath and let it out slowly as a happy sigh, smiling. She drifted off to sleep a few minutes later and had the best sleep she had ever had probably her entire life. She felt safe.
6:00 AM, Skyler's alarm went off. She moaned and rolled over, turning it off and opening her eyes. She got up and went through her normal routine of the morning. She and her mother ate breakfast, and then she headed off to school.
She walked in, and as she passed by Ms. Ward's room, she looked inside. "She's not here yet." Skyler decided to do something different this morning and sit outside on one of the benches outside the entrance. She brought out a novel from her bag and began to read it, waiting for the bell to ring. It was actually pretty nice sitting outside and immersing herself in the book. "I should do this more often..." she thought.
Can you see it twinkling?
The last evening went on without any incident for Kate, it was really calm. Almost too calm, however. How long had it been before she actually got out to some place or with friends. When it came to it though, she wondered if she even had the time to actually go out and have fun. Most of the time it also was more trouble than anything else. She had been with enough men in her past to realize they were not what she wished for her future. In all possible way, actually. She definitely was attracted to women, but had yet to meet one that gave her this little, intriguing sparkle. The one that would made her curious and want to know more and take risks. Until she'd find such a woman, Kate was bound to remain at home alone, and it might have been best this way. Despite being alone, she never let herself become too lazy. Most things were seen as troublesome and uselessly tiring for her, but she nonetheless kept her apartment impeccably clean. It was decorated with good taste, too, enough to let her be comfortable while looking modern. Kate herself always looked good. Her hairs, makeup and skin were top notch. What else had she to worry about anyway?
After another too short night, she proceeded to her morning routine, each sigh remembering her how boring her life had been these last months. She craved for something to happen, but surrounded only by students and never going out, the chances were slim. It kept stuck in her mind as she was driving to school again, though the faces of her fellow, and often a lot older, colleagues when seeing her on that motorbike never failed to get her a smile and put her in a good mood. She knew the other teachers looked down on her mostly because she was young and inexperienced, but also because she was quite wild and unexpected. More than once she went into conflicts with them for multiple things, mostly regarding disciplinary measures towards some students she deemed over the top. This school definitely had a bullying problem, and most teachers turned a blind eye on it, denying it with every fiber of themselves. It was easier this way and way more easy to scold students who never did anything. Skyler had been no exception on that part, but Kate felt it was different at some point. She told her to come see her personally next time, which she never did. Something in that girl reminded her of herself when she was younger, it might have been the reason for her to try and over protect the girl.
Kate had a problem in which she had a hard time getting rid of bothersome thoughts, and it affected her to a maximum effect when she ran into Skyler reading a book at the entrance of the school. Kate was so abruptly brought back from within her mind that she looked shocked for a time, but it did not last. She smiled as she passed her hand between Skyler's head and the book, to draw her attention.
''Hello, Miss Graham! A book, is it? Did you not see the time? Classes start in about 3 minutes.'' and she was right. Loyal to herself, Kate was to arrive at her own classroom at the last moment yet again.
''Hurry to your first class. I'll see you in History today...'' And she walked off, but suddenly stopped and turned back to her before adding ''...Well, I hope, right?'' with a wink, jokingly. It was Kate's style to act in such ways and most students had accepted it by now.
Skyler had completely engulfed herself in her book, enjoying escaping from the real world for a little while by living vicariously through the characters she loved. Living with all of the bullying was so difficult that Skyler had to find something to help her maintain her sanity. Reading and television were the two main things that did that for her. She would get attached to characters very easily and would sometimes imagine herself in their situation. She was so lost in her world, that she hadn't even noticed Ms. Ward come up to the school. When the teacher's hand broke her vision of the page, Skyler jumped a bit and sucked in a quick breath. A thought flashed through her mind that it was another bully, and she was scared...but only for a second because then she saw that it was Kate. "Oh. Uh, hi, Ms. Ward."
"...Classes start in about 3 minutes."
Skyler looked at her watch, and her eyes widened just a bit. "Oh! Thanks! I can't afford to be late, not after yesterday."
When Ms. Ward winked at her, a bit of pink rose to Skyler's cheeks. She simply nodded her response, signaling she would be in class. She stood from the bench, grabbed all of her belongings, and quickly headed to class.
She had been so focused when she was reading her book earlier that morning, but now Skyler was having trouble concentrating. In all of her classes leading up to lunch, the voices and sounds in the classroom were nothing but mumbles to her. Even at lunch, she was distracted. She didn't even have any clear, coherent thoughts. Her mind was just foggy.
Skyler jumped and looked at her friend who called her name. "Huh?"
"What's up with you? Are you okay?"
Skyler had just been sitting there, pushing her food around with her fork. "Oh, yeah. Yeah, sorry, I've just been distracted all day. I keep thinking about what happened yesterday." She lied. She might not have known exactly why her mind was so foggy, but it wasn't about the trophy case. It wasn't anything negative at all.
"Those bastards. I just wanna find them and...and..." Skyler's friend Jessica started grinding one fist into her other hand, signaling beating up the bullies.
Skyler laughed, "It's alright, Jess. Nothing happened to me because of it."
"Yeah, about that," another friend said. "How was detention?"
Skyler shrugged. "I just did some extra History work and left. Ms. Ward was very helpful."
Jessica smirked, "Oooh, Ms. Ward was the teacher you went to for detention? She's hot." Skyler rolled her eyes but couldn't help but blush just a little bit. "Definitely the best teacher here."
"Yeah," Skyler nodded. "She definitely saved me from the Wrath of Sanders."
Lunch was over. Skyler said her goodbyes to her friends and began to walk to History. She walked in the room and took her usual seat kind of close to the back and got all of her stuff out and ready for class. For once, she felt happy to be at that school, even if it was just one room in which she felt truly safe.
