It is the year 2624. The world and its technology has advanced far beyond what humanity could have expected, to the point where humanity no longer exists. Man and Technology have melded into a single being. Cyborgs, androids, Bio-Engineered species of all kind are together in existence in the world. In a world with well over 50 billion registered citizens (and even more unregistered), 'Pure' humans number less than 1 million. In this world, being a 'Pure' human is more of a disadvantage than not. Flesh and bone can't compete with advanced alloys and bio-weave. Heavy cybernetic implants and even complete prosthesis is common and even expected.
With all of these technologies come a slew of advancements once thought impossible. Space stations orbit the earth, housing millions of people, using Harvesters collecting energy from the sun and converting it into pure matter. Fabricators can use this matter to create base materials to be turned food and nourishment. Matter can be combined with the trace amounts of earth's remaining resources to create alloys, some extremely tough and nigh impossible to break, while cheaper allows hold the strength and qualities of steel and titaniums. Matter has replaced metals like gold and silver as materials of value. So much to the fact that the new universal currency, 'Mass' is based on amounts of matter.
Matter is the way of the future. Matter is the future of society. However, Harvesters and Fabricators are incredibly difficult to maintain and requires more power than can be provided by massive solar arrays. The power of the solar arrays must be supplemented by fusion generators, which use fuels that cannot be created by Fabricators. As a result very few are able to afford Harvesters and Fabricators. Of the 12 Harvesters and 48 Fabricators in existence, none of them are controlled by any National Government. These machines of life are owned and closely guarded by 10 Mega-corporations. Businesses. Behind the false, figurehead rule of Earth's remaining nations, the world is controlled by these Mega-Corporations, laws are molded to fit the needs of the Big 10. Almost all technology is under the control of these 10 Powerhouses.
The Big 10 Mega-Corporation controls the world through technology. All citizens are electronically registered and most are implanted with micro-tracers. Cameras constantly monitor the world, and insurrections are put down quickly, and brutally.
It would be wrong however, to say that these Corporations get along. In fact, it is quite the opposite. While on the outside, the Big 10 maintain a rather cold, but conversational tone with one another, in the background, they are engaged in a 10 way free-for-all. Alliances are made, enemies are crushed, allies are backstabbed, and enemies resurge in a endless tug of war for power, and more importantly control over the Fabricators and Harvesters.
At the front of this internal war are Shadow Operatives. These specialists for hire engage in an espionage war between the Corporations, stealing, misleading, and assassinating in an attempt at tipping the balance of power. These Shadow Operatives, are discreet, sometimes subtle, and more often than not, deadly. Their operations either end without a single notice, or they end with dozens of dead security officers.
The world's technology has advanced to an almost fantastical level. I'm going to take a break in the cinematic story telling to break down the basics of technology in a way that is hopefully easier to get the gist of.
Cybernetics and implants can be replaced by complete androids. These cybernetics can be anything from robotic arms, to hyper advanced eyes, a computer built into your arm, even a generator installed in your chest. Bio-engineering is responsible for creating a multitude of species. This can be whatever you want. If you want to give yourself 'elf' ears because it lets you hear better, that is a proper justification, you want to give yourself a tail because you're into that kinda stuff? go ahead. These cybernetics and bio-advancements means that you have complete control over your character and their appearance. These changes to their physiology can be subtle or omnipresent depending on your preferences.
Weapons technology has advanced to mass drivers and energized bullets. Pure energy weapons, while useful for having arguably infinite ammunition, is slower in both rate of fire and projectile speed, does less damage to treated armor, and overheats easily. On the other hand, energy edged blades have become more widespread because of their light weight, ease of use, and cutting power.
For this RP, a small group of us will be playing as Shadow Operatives (Bet you didn't see that one coming) for one of the smaller Mega-Corporations of the Big 10, The Asara Corporation, based out of New Tokyo. What starts off as a somewhat typical and semi-easy/difficult mission will take a turn for the worse as we find ourselves thrust into the world of Dystopian Earth where conflicting loyalties and danger will hound our team at every corner, as we struggle to survive in a not so friendly climate, where neighbors don't trust one other and brothers stab brothers in the back.
Life as a Shadow Operative isn't easy, and while it is a hell of a lot better than being one of the worker 'slaves' of the world, danger and death is omnipresent, and the life expectancy for a Shadow Op is about 10-20 years, if they're good at what they do. Shadow Operatives don't retire. They either die on the job, or they run away and are likely assassinated.
In this RP I will be taking a group of 4 characters (including my own). As such, this will not be a first come, first served RP. Players will be chosen that offer the most diversity in their characters. Meaning, if five people make a cold hearted assassin, and one person makes a cynical hacker.. you get the picture yes?
Name: Eric Stone
Race: Biologically-Engineered Species/Cyborg
Eric is part of a bio-engineered species known as Frosteyes, commonly called Chameleons or or Icemen for slang. Frosteyes are commonly noted by their white irises and are known to have extremely sharp vision. They also perform surprisingly well in cold weather environments. Most notably, Frosteyes are known to be cold to the touch, as their bodies absorb heat rather than produce it.
Eric has further augmented his eyes with a neural-optical implant that speeds up the rate at which information travels from his eyes to his brain, increasing his reaction time. A second implant interacts with his optical implant allows him to save images into a cybernetic database at the base of his skull, essentially giving him eidetic (photographic) memory.
Personality: Calm and calculating, Eric Stone is mature and confident, his demeanor almost as cold and aloof as his skin. He doesn't care much for politics and diplomacy and is as likely to shoot you as he is to smooth talk his way through a situation. Holding efficiency in the highest regard, Eric is not afraid to show his disdain towards 'coworkers' and society in general. He appreciates subtlety and quick thinkers, and inversely views hot heads and the clueless as inferior. He is slow to anger, and is more likely to use quiet and passive aggression as opposed to outright anger, and is often quite hard to gauge.
Background: Eric was biologically engineered to be a Frosteye at birth, as opposed to being born to a family of Frosteyes, making him a first generation Frosteye, and thus giving him more 'pure' abilities of Frosteyes, as many biologically engineered species' abilities lose potency as the generations go on. Throughout his young life, Eric was also seen as the mature one, never getting into any fights or disagreements. At least not publicly. However, when confronted alone, Eric was known for lashing out with extreme efficiency. As such, he spent most of his early life alone, with very few friends, even fewer that he genuinely cared about. When he turned 15, he got his first cybneretic implant, his neuro-optical implant. 2 years later, he got his second cybernetic implant.
At age 22, Eric somehow found himself in a fight against four Parliament Corp security guards. 5 minutes after the fight started, three of the guards were dead. The last one tried to run away and was shot in the back of the head. An Asara Corp camera caught this action on tape, and Eric was offered a job as a Asara Corp Security Guard. Four months after taking the job, Eric had been fired due to misconduct and lack of cooperation with other security guards, leading up to his sacking as a result of killing a fellow guard. A few weeks later, a representative from Asara Corp approached him and left with a broken hand. Following that, Eric was recruited into the ranks of Asara Corp's Shadow Operatives.
Over the next four years, Eric worked as a Shadow Operative, growing in infamy as he took down four opposing Shadow Operatives at once. He usually worked alone or in a team of two, rarely coming into contact with anyone from Asara Corp unless it was about work.
The Takashi APP-3 is a Mass-Driver pistol commonly used by Asara Corp security forces. It is cheap, sturdy, reliable, and easy to maintain. It uses a 21 round magazine that fires .45 HSC-E (Hardened Steel Core, Energized) and is capable of both semi and fully automatic fire. It comes with a built in laser sight and flashlight and an accessory rail on top of the slide. Eric's APP-3 Custom comes with night sights, for ease of aiming in dark conditions, as well as an integrated silencer. Eric also makes use of a specialized .45 M-E round, which tumbles in a specific way when entering a body to create a wound channel that imitates a rifle caliber round, which helps to confuse forensic analysts about the type of weapon used.
A palm sized back up pistol, the Jackknife, like most modern revolvers, are not Mass-Driver weapons, and as a result have less overall power and speed. The Jacknife uses a six round cylinder and fires .38 Energized rounds. Eric's Jackknife has a small laser sight attached to the bottom that is capable of launching a taser dart.
The Electron Mace is a telescopic baton capable of delivering a debilitating electric shock to an enemy. When closed, the electric head and grip are connected. It can then be pulled to its maximum length. Its electrical system is activated by a small trigger loop at the bottom of the handle, triggerable with the little finger.
Name: Computerized Interfacing Hacking Andriod (Ciha – commonly pronounced See-ha)
Age: Appears to be late 20s, time in operation 11 years.
She was built for several purposes, but the main one and the one she was most successful at was being an intermediary between humans/BES and computers. She is able to interface with most computers, having within each of her fingers a different connection port which is released when the tips disconnect and bend back. To make her more comforting to the organics that she works with, she appears to be mostly organic, covered with a layer of synthetic flesh that both looks and feels natural. However, when it comes to sexuality, she is not…ahem…fully functional.
Her “senses” as organics would call it are also incredibly enhanced. For her “eyesight” she sees with a computer enhanced interface, able to read heat-signatures, x-ray, and targeting overlays. She does not have a sense of smell, per se, but can detect particles in the air. Her hearing is sharp and provided that she got a good recording of the sounds, she can separate and analyze the different layers in it.
As an android, she was designed with a stomach cavity that can hold small firearms and other materials, allowing her to carry them with her and keep them concealed. Her basic abilities are also heightened, as she has a quick response time, high agility and endurance, as well as good strength. As a machine herself, she can easily incorporate herself into foreign computer programming, and often spends her spare time updating her files on new advances in programming and security protocols.
She is a strange android, as her creator had given her a limited sense of self-creation. Of course she still has a control chip, should the worse happen, and the ability to control her is given to any commanding Shadow Operative. Over the years in operation she had developed an austere personality, knowing full well that she could be overridden or discontinued at any time. Though she was met to be an intermediary, she never fully develops the comforting persona that her creator wished for, instead becoming an eerily efficient and calculating presence. If it appears that she is more aware of situations than she lets on, it because she is so, as she almost always runs on at least two levels, the first paying attention to the situation surrounding her, the second comparing the situation to other accounts of similar historical and fictional events.
To say that she does not form bonds or have preferences would be incorrect. She does so, but not necessarily in a way that many organics would understand. She does not have compassion, per se, but she prefers to find her compatriots in peak working order (and for organics, she includes emotional disposition in making these calculations). She exhibits preferences for those she works with, based on a variety of factors (efficiency, competence, ability to work as part of a group, etc). She also believes that groups work better together with experience, and thus strives to develop a sort of friendship with them. She may not be cheery, overly humorous, or even emotional, but she does “care.”
She was designed by the research and development team of the Asara Corporation in an attempt to create a fully independent but controllable artificial hacker. She was the first successful prototype, and she performed well in early controlled settings. After extensive tests, about a full year after she was “born,” she was assigned to work with a Shadow Operative as her own personal hack-bot (as the Operative playfully called her) and the team up proved to be incredibly effective. Pleased by their success, the team that created her continued to monitor her progress as they began to experiment on improved versions of her.
She ran with the Operative for the next 9 years, building a strong relationship with her before she perished in an operation gone wrong. After the death of her partner she was pulled by the scientific team and installed with upgrades and a new technology, though the head scientist insisted that her memories remain untouched. After spending nearly a year being upgraded and adjusting to her new skills, she was cleared to reenter the field.
The Prototype Internal Blade A-34 –
She has two sharp blades that are stored in her forearms. During battle, the arms open to release the blades and they flip forward so the hilts lay in the palms of her hands, allowing her to wield them like twin light blades.
The Multi-Interface Array Kit –
As mentioned above, she contains a series of interfacing devices in her fingers that allow her connect with a variety of computers.
The Takashi APP-3 -
A Mass-Driver pistol commonly used by Asara Corp security forces. Ciha carries it for long ranged shooting, should she need to.
Adaline "Ada" Mercury .x. 27 Years Old .x. Female .x. Cyborg
Not wanting to become a full android, but also not wanting to remain "pure", Ada got several cybernetic implants and thus become a cyborg. While she still appears human, Ada's skeletal frame was outfitted with an apparatus of cybernetic connections known as the CSA or Cybernetic Skeletal Array. The CSA is a complex network of wires, connections, circuits, and other tech you would find on a computer motherboard. It is a crucial companion to Ada's most valuable piece of gear and it is integral to that gear's operation.
Beyond that, the CSA also augments Ada's physical attributes; strength, stamina, agility, reaction time, etc. While the boosted levels aren't superhuman, they enable Ada to become more durable than a "pure" human and also allow her to go longer without eating, sleeping, and doing other basic actions a "pure" human would have to do on a regular basis. The CSA also works in conjunction with Ada's human brain to give her the most versatile control over its functions in relation to the piece of gear it works with. In short, the CSA would only be able to function at 100% with a cyborg because it requires a human brain and other human organs to be present and working.
What Ada does not possess however is augmented vision. Her eyes still work as a normal human eye would, with CSA augmenting brain functions to cause reaction in the eyes if necessary. Even then though, she can't see in X-ray vision, or see heat signatures, or see things that bionic eyes enable others to see.
Ada is probably as confident or as cocky as they come; the term used depends on the person you're talking to. More accurately put, fear seems to be something of a foreign concept to the woman. In the face of death and danger, Ada seems to genuinely be "turned on". In conversation, while she can be a bit sarcastic and short, Ada also comes off as slightly flirtatious. One can never truly see the actual motivations in her eyes, but with Ada around, one can also be assured of an interesting conversation. This type of personality also affects her emotions, as Ada is not one to get angered easily or at least let it be shown. All in all, Ada is a socialite who enjoys the dangers of her jobs and whose fearlessness can often be mistaken for a willingness to rush into her own death.
Ada began her life as a risk-taking criminal. For as long as her family could remember, Adaline Mercury was a girl who loved to break the rules and explore her surroundings. She was always going outside and climbing the surrounding buildings just because she liked the adrenaline rush she felt in her stomach as she got higher and higher up. In her early teens, Ada progressed into stealing objects. She didn't steal for monetary gain or for recognition, but just to see what she could get away with. It'd be a lie to say she wasn't caught a few times, but as she got older and the skills she was teaching herself grew, she began to fall deeper into the life. After years of running around and climbing, Ada had become an accomplished free runner of sorts, growing infamous among her small group of friends for scaling the tallest buildings in the city.
On her eighteenth birthday, Ada got her cybernetic implants. The reasons were simple; she felt as if she had reached the peak of what a pure human could do. She wanted to climb higher, run faster, and in engage in more dangerous activities that a pure human couldn't possibly accomplish without some help from machines. With that reasoning, Ada was all for becoming a cyborg. Even better for her, because of her willingness to try dangerous things and her fitness level, she was chosen to try an experimental piece of tech known as the Cybernetic Skeletal Array or CSA for short. Because of the nature of the experiment, there was only one in existence and Ada quickly agreed to be its field tester.
A year later, Ada cut ties with the inventors and joined the Asara Corporation branch of Shadow Operatives. She was made aware of the existence of Shadow Operatives through conversations with the inventors of her CSA and everything they described sounded exactly like what she wanted. Dangerous jobs and working out of the confines of the law. During her initial acceptance test, Ada impressed the Asara Corp execs with the various functions of the CSA. She was accepted into the branch and then outfitted with another experimental piece of tech, this time something that could work in conjunction with the CSA to create a valuable role for the young woman.
Presently, Ada has been working with the Asara Shadow Operatives for nine years. She has absolutely no regrets.
Takashi APP-3 Custom - The Takashi APP-3 is a Mass-Driver pistol commonly used by Asara Corp security forces. Adaline's custom APP-3, while mostly the same as a normal Takashi APP-3, is actually chambered for 9mm HSC-E Parabellum because she prefers the tumble of a 9mm Parabellum to the sheer stopping power of a .45. On top of that, she carries a custom silencer that is made to fit the Takashi so she can go full stealth if need be.
Energy Blade - Not really a fan of firearms, Ada's main weapon of choice is her energy blade. It's modeled after a curved short sword and the energy edge is lavender in color. Due to the edge being made of energy, it is able to cut through almost anything. It's kept in a holster that is attached to Ada's belt at the back, just under the small of her back.
The Remix Scrambler - This is Ada's main piece of gear and it only functions in conjunction with the CSA. More commonly known as the RS, the apparatus is worn on the entirety of the right arm and has a wire that extends from the nape of the neck to just above the right tricep and it enters the body on each end. Rather than hack, the RS enables Ada to overwhelm, scramble, or reprogram technology. The device works through touch; once Ada has grabbed on to the target piece of tech, the RS sends signals to the CSA which then allows the brain to feed or take information into or from the tech. The CSA converts the information from the brain into digital information before allowing it to enter the target tech. In this way, Ada can interact with technology without hacking and cause several different outcomes.
The RS only works on technology however and cannot interact with bio-organisms or bio-engineered technology. The targeted tech must be all machine with no organic parts whatsoever.
Name: Russet Tymes (Sett)
Race: Biologically Engineered [Human/Grey Wolf]
Personality: His occupation defines his personality. Ruthless, efficient, and straight to the point. Most of the time. Strangely enough, the solitary assassin isn't so solitary. Sett prefers the company of others, working in a team, and as such can become quite chatty. Its not that he craves a personal connection, he just likes being able to pass the time, and have someone there to cheer his victories with. It also might be the reassurance of someone watching your back.
When working in a team, he often is chastised for violating noise discipline. Shut your jab is phrase he often hears. Jokes, jabs, and laughter is often the cause of admonishments directed at him, even in the middle of a job. It genuinely seems like he has a good time, even when subjected to near death scenarios.
When subject to a lone mission however, he changes completely. Quiet, professional, he just wants to get the job done with speed and accuracy. Nothing worse than being stuck in the field all on your lonesome.
Background: Sett is the result of an attempt to make the perfect hunter. What is one of the greatest inhuman predators in the world, they asked. The answer, the wolf. The instincts, natural skill, and evolutionary mindest of a hunting wolf is a force to be reckoned with. The goal was to create the ultimate hunter without using any cybernetic implants or technological augmentation. They succeeded, or would have.
Product MIKIV was a success on paper, but in field deployments, did not quite acheive the efficiency they had been looking for. They had overlooked the wolve's predisposition towards a social atmosphere. Lone wolves were the exception in the wild rather than the norm. An additional issue was that without any augmentation their newest product just couldn't go toe to toe with more advanced, augmented, beings. The program was iced, Sett and his other compatriots were sold to the highest bidder, and his former family was torn apart. In his case, the highest bidder had been the Asara Corporation. The role he fills now is Shadow Operative.
Rather than augment Sett after the fact with implants, the Asara Corporation saw it fit to merely outfit him with a simple neural interface, and a specialized protective suit. With that new addition to his armory, he has become a force to truly be reckoned with. His previous disadvantage had been remedied.
It can provide him with updated information, protection from the elements and limited protection from hostile acts. It allows him to operate in many different environments without undue discomfort, but most useful of all, it allows for limited cloaking of not only heat emission but visual and audible as well. Due to both his unusual appearance and his armor, in public he layers over his armor with baggy, light grey cargo pants along with a hoodie, with the hood up of course.
Another part of his Corporation mandated loadout is a ClodArt AM Railgun, which propels a half pound, energized, discarding sabot round at 2800 meters a second. Accurate out to 2 kilometers, 5 if properly mounted. He has, however, scratched on the side of his weapon the saying "Velocitas Eradico". "I, Being Speed, Eradicate."
He did, much to his delight, get to choose a few of his own weapons. His most prized being a black ceramic and carbon steel mix blade. It holds an incredibly durable edge, and can be energized to provide additional sharpness for cutting through tough metals.
The second weapon of his own choosing would be the Gashi-5 PDW pistol. With a 21 round magazine holding energized .45 rounds, it packs a punch in a pinch.
The ever essential datapad is also apart of his loadout. Allowing him to manipulate and access varying means of electronic storage and communication. It is basically the computer of his armor, as his armor and HUD would lack all but the most basic information if not for the pad commonly attached to his left forearm. It is detachable however, allowing for use even outside of the suit.
The latest addition to his collection of devices and weaponry would be his very own drone. A Debacle Personal Assistant, outfitted with much more gear than the standard consumer version. A UAV, it allows Sett to collect even more data about his surroundings, and provides him with range estimates for long shots, enemy locations for close ones, and a proverbial eye in his backside. It even has a similar ability to cloak itself, allowing it to follow Sett into situations needing a bit more tact. The one downside was the AI necessary to run it, which possesses a strange sense of self.
This section of the OOC will update as we encounter enemies, people, and learn information. The idea of this is for us as players to be able to recall information our characters should have in their brains, without having to pick through IC and subtle details.
The Big 10 is slang commonly used to refer to the 10 Corporations that control the world's Harvesters and Fabricators. Even the smaller players in the Big 10 have massive influence over the remaining countries of the world. While several Big 10 Corporations posses singular focuses, the big 10 Corporations also strive to be very general and thus not be dependent on one another for power.
Pantheon United:The Original, and biggest of the Big 10, Pantheon United has been one of- if not the most influential innovative corporations in history. Pantheon United's primary focus is cybernetics, and they are in control of 3 Harvesters and 9 Fabricators. Pantheon United is based out of Rome.
Hakivari Industries: Another major power in the big 10, Hakivari Industries are known for their highly advanced machines, with leading research in both androids and automated mechs. Hakivari Industries are in control of 2 Harvesters and 5 Fabricators and are based out of Hong Kong.
Al-Kimara Limited: Based out of Egypt, Al-Kimara Limited is best known for its work on different sources of Energy, and while they have yet to make any stunning breakthroughs they have claimed again and again how close they are. They control one Harvester and 5 Fabricators.
Phase One Defences: Based in Los Angeles, Phase One is a growing power in the Big 10. With their major focus being weapons tech, Phase One may not field the largest or best trained security forces, but they are the best equipped. They control a single Harvester and 6 Fabricators.
Terranova: Based in Beijing, Terranova may not excel in any particular technological field, but it has the massive populace of former China to command, making its employee base even larger than that of Pantheon United. They possess one Harvester and 3 Fabricators.
Asara One of the smallest of the Big 10, Asara is based out of Tokyo, and is known for its focus on biological engineering. They control five fabricators, but have no Harvester, and therefore must find other ways of obtaining large amounts of matter for their fabricators.
Parizone Another smaller company in the Big 10, Parizone is based out of Tokyo as well, and have started to conduct chemical research. They posses a pair of Fabricators but no harvesters.
Haze The smallest company in the big 10, they are nevertheless not to be underestimated. While their size is small, even the larger corporations fear their capabilities. Employing experts at espionage, Haze is in almost complete control of the information market. They possess a single harvester and fabricator for their purposes.
Liberty Unlimited: Based in New York, Liberty unlimited focuses on aerospace tech and is currently working on new types of satellite cities to launch into space. They control a single harvester and 4 fabricators.
The Guild: Based in London, The Guild is known not for its technological prowess, but for the shrewdness of its businessmen. With considerable know how on the economy, The Guild has manipulated the economy to its own needs more than once. Because of their economic power they control two harvesters and a whole 8 fabricators.
As most of the world has swapped from a government and nation base to a company and corporation base, most modern militaries have been replaced by corporate security forces. Unfortunately, since corporations find the need to employ their forces quickly, their training is usually not as up to scratch, and the effectiveness of each security guard varies by man. The majority of security forces are split into 3 tiers. Tier 3 guards they typically carry low-medium grade ballistic vests, with a earpiece transmitter with a built in HUD. Cybernetics vary by guard, but they all typically carry a pistol. Tier 2 guards (as seen in the picture) carry medium grade ballistic armor, with a helmet and HUD. They are typically armed with a pistol as well as a assault rifle, submachine gun, or shotgun. Tier 1 Guards are heavily armored and typically more competent. They wear fully sealed high grade armor, as well as assault rifles, grenade launchers, and machine guns.
The head of Asara Corporation's Shadow Operatives is known only as The Chairman. He answers directly to the CEO of Asara and hands out contracts to the various Shadow Operatives.
