These are my current notes.
A young adult black dragon has taken up a roost in the local swamp. He has enchanted black cloaks that are resistant to acid, but force a DC 13 Will save or they become his slave while the cloak is equipped. Upon dying while the cloak is equipped, the slave dissolves into acid, also dissolving all items they had on them. He is slowly building up his number of followers while quietly and cunning extorting the villagers of Thorinstead. For whatever reason, the party is sent into the swamp to try and find it's lair and defeat it. The dragon's name is Aggarath.
A small village which has been made profitable by the refinement of tar found in the local swamps. Some of the locals have disappeared when heading out into the swamps recently. There are many odd jobs to be found, although arcana and magic is looked upon with superstition. The people of the town place offerings at shrines to water gods hoping for good fortune, and other religions are met with intolerance. The people in general are simple, earnest and resistant to change. The town is medium, with it's own chapel, two taverns, a blacksmith, apothecary, garrison and other odds and ends. Security is medium, guards patrol major sections of town at regular intervals, although the back alleys and less fared paths get less attention. Crime is at an all time high in the city with the number one reported crime being theft. Rumors abound of an underground group of assassins who live in the wells and cisterns of the town, although investigations by the town guard have produced nothing.
All players begin after a long days travel seeking rest at the “Gnarled Oak” inn. After enjoying a few brews (or a lot) and the other accommodations of the inn, they finally make it their quarters for a night of rest. Dinner is to be had at this time and can be purchased at the inn for 1 silver. Each room beds 3 players, although they may put more than one in a room, they will have to sleep on the floor incurring fatigue the next morning and not healing any hit points that night for restless sleep. After the players have decided to sleep, they will be visited by 2 black robed men. A listen check with DC 20 to be awakened from sleep and hear them approaching. If the DC fails, the door is kicked in and a canister is thrown in the room which emits a green vapor which fills the room. Fortitude DC of 12 to resist being knocked unconscious for 1d6 turns. If the entire party is knocked unconscious, they lose all valuable belongs and any gold that is not well hidden. If they are alive then combat begins.
Robed Robber (x2)
HP: 6/6 6/6
+1/1d6-1 (on successful hit, DC 12 fort check or take 1 point of STR damage)
+4 DR against Acid based attacks
The robbers will turn into acid upon dying completely and dissolve all their belongings except for their black cloaks. If a PC attempts to wear a black cloak they will be forced to make a DC will save of 13 every turn or become a slave of the dragon for 1 turn. If a party member is made a slave of the dragon, they will not communicate to other party members, and will senselessly attack the nearest player. If a PC succeeds the will save, they will see a flash of a black, skeletal dragon in a murky watery area, roaring in rage and must take a DC 10 will save or be shaken. The cloak has +4 Acid Resistance and cannot be destroyed by acid. If they succeed the will save, they may wear the cloak for 10 minutes or one turn before being forced to make a will save. If the cloak is disenchanted in any way, it loses it's Acid Resistance and Slave of the Dragon effect and becomes a mundane black cloak.
The Next Day:
The party will wake up and find a letter with a black seal slid underneath their door. The wax seal looks as though it has been pressed with a single gold coin. The contents of the letter are as follows:
To Our Esteemed Partners,
First off, I would like to apologize for your... inconvenience last night. Certainly, it was unfortunate that you were the targets of such a brash and brutish attack but if I know you all as well as I think, perhaps we could help each other. Those black robed fools have been causing all kinds of trouble for me and my association and I could use some assistance in removing them. Our pay is good, as you shall come to find. Enclosed are (x) platinum pieces, one for each of your party. Consider it a small fraction of an advancement should you choose to assist my organization. On the reverse of this note you shall find a map. Follow it out of the town and further instructions shall be provided. Should you undertake our task, we would be indebted to you beyond mere gold pieces.
The party may then choose to take some time to shop or look around before continuing.
For clarification, the note is from the assassin's guild which also does extortion of it's own to the town, and have been losing revenue to the dragon's minions as the dragon builds up his stockpile. Any ideas as to what would be awesome to add next?
