A lot of people say that Jay is always an angry/agressive person. Which would be true on the outside, but he does have a soft side -yet to be revealed- when he is alone with his current, and only, pokemon;Houndour. Life was not all hugs and kisses growing up.
Jay never knew, or had, any father figure. It has been a broken family since before his birth. Jay's father was rarely home. He traveled a lot, seeking the same goal as any dedicated pokemon trainer. To be "the very best". Though, this was no obstacle before Jay's birth. His mother traveled with his father, playing a gypsy-like role. When she became pregnant with Jay, she argued that they would not be able to travel for quite some time. At least not while Jay was still an infant. This was because of the simple fact that it may be too dangerous, but his fathers ambition was far too great. So, he left to continue his travels. Jay's mother made a new home of the nearest town, New Bark Town.
Jay's mother picked up the old business, once he turned six. That meant packing ther things, bidding farewell to their friends, and hitting the road. Jay mostly kept to himself, having quickly learned that when you are a traveler, friends come and go with the blink of an eye. He didn't understand what it meant to build connections. In his eyes, he thought "What is the point of trying to make friends of people that you had a chance of probably never seeing again?". It goes without saying that whenever Jay did encounter conversation, he was socially awkward. He spoke what was on his mind, and still does, he was too blunt for his own good.
Having grown up as the single child, to a single parent nontheless, as a traveler, Jay had to learn hoe to survive when there was no city town nearby. This meant that he had to mature at a rapid pace, having to take care of himself and his mother. Though while his mother offered the assistance of her pokemon, he was independant and would always refuse. Once he had learned of his fathers leave to chase pokemon, he could not view them with the same passion that his father did. It was rather more like a disgust for these creatures. Jay could have cared less for them.
At the age of thirteen, tragedy struck once again as Jay and his mother fell victim to the violence at the hands of Team Rocket. His mother put up a "good" fight, she was no match for the team by herself. Alas, her pokemon were taken from her. Jay could not stand the sight of his mothers pain as she cried for the lost. Jay had done absolutely nothing to help defend against the attack. He felt completely useless. Even if the end result was the same, he would not feel so guilty if he would have at least tried to help. Unable to forgive himself, Jay made a promise to himself that he would bring happiness back to his mothers heart by any means necessary.
It was decided that he would run away to seek the pokemon that his mother had lost. Leaving a note, reassuring his mother that he WOULD bring happiness back to the family, he left the same night of the attack. While Jay had different intentions, one could say like father like son. Jay had to work and train with the very same creatures he disliked. Though, he set this aside because in the long run they would help him reach the finish line.
Three years after the incident, Jay managed to land a spot on one of Team Rocket's teams. He posed as a villainous bastard, a role which he seemed to play well. He simply geared his hatred towards the innocent, rather than Team Rocket.
Jay stuck around with Team Rocket, sneaking around in hopes of finding his mothers pokemon, for too long. His true intentions were discovered at the age of twenty-two. Fortunately enough, he managed to escape before they got to him. On the otherside, he had nothing to his name but the clothes he wore. He didn't even have pokemon. His dislike for them never changed. He always left them where he could, when he did not need them.
Back on the road as a traveler, Jay has picked up many odd jobs. He never stayed in one spot for too long, fearing what would happen if he were to run into Team Rocket again.
Now a year later, Jay finds himself traveling to Cianwood City. Here he would run into a wounded Houndour. While he would normally not felt much pity, there was something about this pokemon that caught his attention. Maybe Jay has started the process to "seeing the light" and could see a piece of himself on this Houndour that warmed a tiny fraction of his heart. They have both been wounded and left to fend for themselves. So, he took this pokemon with him to get treated in Cianwood. It was not long before Houndour took a liking to Jay. Before long Houndour officially became Jay's first pokemon.
Having played for the opposite team, Jay knows of the Champion Ball scam. For this reason, while Houndour has been captured by pokeball, he refuses to keep Houndour in a pokeball.
