Welcome to the Portwood Institute for Talented Youths.
Established in 1984 by Professor Alan Portwood, the Portwood Institute for Talented Youths is an elite institution of prestige and success. Located in a stunning rural area of Massachusetts, and within 30 minutes drive to Boston, the academy is both secluded and accessible. With award-winning accommodation and facilities, we are fully committed to ensuring that your time here at PITY is comfortable and safe whilst we help you to hone and improve your unique talents. Our classes were rated Outstanding by the national examination board and, with 98.8% of our students passing all of their end-of-year-exams, it's fair to say that the rating is an accurate one. During your stay here, you will have full access to all of our state-of-the-art facilities, which are detailed in sufficient depth below. We can't wait to meet you as you enter the next chapter of your life.
Surrounded by sprawling woodland and overlooking Massachusetts Bay, not to mention the majestic architecture steeped in history, it's hard to imagine a more beautiful place to study than here at PITY. However, as the old saying goes: "it's what's on the inside that counts". Following a recent refurbishment, PITY now boasts a grand and historic exterior with a fresh and modern interior makeover, including an array of award-winning facilities to which you have full access. The building is split into three segments: in the middle is the Main Building, which is home to most of the facilities we have to offer.
The Entrance Hall
The main building is the heart of the institute; both literally and metaphorically. And what better way to welcome our guests into our arms than through our grand entrance hall? A large, impressive room, refurbished to match its original design - albeit with modern flare - the entrance hall is the main hub of information. Here, you will find the reception desk, where you can take any queries, problems or questions for resolution, as well as a large noticeboard for you to see what is going on around campus. You can even advertise your own events here, too.
Continuing through the entrance hall will bring you to our canteen. Here, you will discover some of the best on-site school catering in the country. Our dedicated team of experienced culinary staff work hard daily to produce ten dinner options every evening, as well as providing all-you-can eat breakfast and lunch buffets. There is ample seating for the entire school, so the the canteen should always feel spacious and relaxed. And don't worry about having to sit beside teachers, either: our staff have private booths tucked away from the rest of the diners.
In essence, what you really came to the institute for is to learn, and PITY provides the perfect environment for that. Our first and second floors boast a collective thirty identical classrooms, each equipped with stylish, modern furnishings and an innovative touch-screen interactive whiteboard. Storage units for personal belongings can be found beneath each desk in order to keep those distractions out of sight. The layout of each room is semi-circular and tiered, to allow each student a clear view of the teacher and whiteboard. As the Library dominates the centre of these floors, the classrooms line the outside walls and windows, and are thus fortunate enough to benefit from the glorious natural light of the outside world.
The library is accessible via the stairs found in the Entrance Hall and in the Canteen, and (with its staircases leading up to higher levels), it primarily dominates the centre of floors one, two and three. Here, students can find any book that they might need for any of their subjects, as well as a vast collection of fiction and non-fiction books for leisure reading. Littered with comfortable leather arm chairs and velvet beanbags, you are certain to find the perfect place to read or study here. However, there is also a hidden stairwell on floor one which leads back down to the ground floor. Here is located a comparatively small room, inaccessible from any other entrance, that is home to our Special Collection. For the serious reader, an entire collection of rare and ancient tomes is stored here. To access this area of the library, you will need to be accompanied by a librarian.
Hidden away beneath the main building, it can sometimes be easy to forget about the laboratory. However, with its high-tech, state-of-the-art equipment for scientific experiments, secure-lock doors for harmful substances and spacious work area, the laboratory is perfect for your scientific studies here at PITY. Fitted with a built in powerful extraction vent, the entire laboratory can be cleared of harmful gasses in under five minutes; allowing disrupted study to return to normal in as little time as possible. The Laboratory can be accessed via stairwells on every floor.
Like the classrooms on the first and second floors, the gym surrounds the outer-edge of the library at the top of the building, on the third floor. The gym is free for students to access 24/7, allowing you to keep fit and let off some steam in a tailor-made environment. There is also a small sports hall in which Physical Education will be taught during the rainy season, however this class will mostly be held outdoors. The highlight of the Gym, which takes up the most space, is actually locked to students most of the time. With a staff member present, however, students can access the Power Training area: a high-tech facility developed especially to withstand the effects of most powers.
Either side of the main building are two, smaller buildings. These are known formally as the East and West Wings, however most students refer to them as the Girls and Boys Dormitories, respectively. Each dormitory holds two people comfortably, providing them with a bright and modern place to spend their free-time, study and sleep. Each dormitory has two beds, desks, chairs, bedside tables and lamps. The dormitories are also fitted with more than enough storage to contain the belongings of two people, and the students are encouraged to devise their own methods of sharing out the space available. Each coupling will also share a luxurious en-suite bathroom, fitted with a sink, shower and toilet.

You will play a young person with an extraordinary gift for which the world seems to hate you. After being contacted by the mysterious Professor Portwood, a non-gifted man with empathy for people in your situation, you are invited to attend his private academy: the Portwood Institute for Talented Youths, fittingly known as PITY. Disguised as merely an academy for high-performing individuals, the institute offers a safehaven for people like you; free from the hatred and prejudice of the outside world. Here, Portwood's excellent team of staff are committed to teaching you how to control and hone your gift, so that you may not only hide it, but also use it to your advantage in every day life. Along with these specialist classes, students will be taught subjects according to the National Curriculum and sit exams like any other school in the country, so as to maximise employment and the chance of living a normal life.
However, no matter how strong a sanctuary the institute proves to be, the world outside its walls is still an unkind and hostile place. The public and the Government alike seem to share a common fear of the gifted, or 'mutants', as the outside world calls them... among other, even less pleasant names. Gifted individuals will randomly disappear from the streets, never to be seen again. Some theorise that they were murdered by their neighbours, scared of having "one of them" in their area. Others conspire that they were captured by Government agents and subjected to sick experiments. There are even rumours of an extremist anti-mutant organisation known as Humans Against Mutants, or HAM for short, that boast specialist, high-tech equipment built solely for the extermination of gifted individuals. Or perhaps they just went into hiding, desperate to escape the threat of everyday life.
Whatever the answer, it is obvious that the secrecy of the institute is of paramount importance to the safety of its residents. Furthermore, is the nature of the institute the only secret bound within its walls? Or are there deeper enigmas that even the staff themselves are oblivious to? After all, if you have to keep something secret, it's because you shouldn't be doing it in the first place...
The only question is: just how long can this secret stay secret?
