People have always been wary of things that they don't understand, and especially of things that are different from them in any way. Example after example of such cruelty can be found littered throughout history, from the attempted genocide of an entire race to ruthless witch hunts fed by fear and hysteria. People born with phenomenal abilities are no different from any of these other groups. Sometimes, a society develops that can tolerate these people, even elevating them to a leadership role in the community. This is not the norm, however. Usually, these gifted individuals are ostracized and detested, if not outright killed. In recent times, this has been the case. Children who are not yet able to control their gift are abused or abandoned for it. Sometimes, these children are slain by mobs in a public setting. Over the decades, however, a school has been built to take in these children and teach them to control their gifts, with a heavy emphasis on using them to do good in society. The school is a haven to those who have a gift, as it is set outside of any country's realm of jurisdiction and thus free from all laws regarding children with superpowers. Some are sent here when their parents learn about their child's abilities, some are invited by the administration themselves, and still others willingly sign up and fly out, leaving the prejudice behind them when they land.~Speech presented during a press conference by Professor Blackdale, Headmaster of The Blackdale Academy, in August of 2009
Established in 2004, the Blackdale Academy is a modern school that seeks to train children in the use of their incredible powers. They seek to instill in the students a basic sense of morality to keep them from misusing their powers, while also teaching them to control their powers so as to avoid accidents. Several pending lawsuits prevented them from actually having classes and taking in students until just recently, much to the frustration of Professor Blackdale. All of the teachers are certified in handling powers and have been equipped with a prototype technology designed to contain a person's power if it grows out of control. Professor Blackdale keeps the secret of this technology strictly under wraps, much to the outcry of the masses. In addition to classes on controlling one's powers and making use of them, the school also complies to internationally accepted standards of educational material, in subject areas like Mathematics, Reading, Writing, History, and Science. They also offer several electives and extracurricular activities. The teachers at the Academy are hired from among the best after a long and intensive interview and background check. Safety is, after all, the number one priority of the Academy.
The campus is rather expansive, covering just under fifty acres of land. The main areas of the school sit around the actual school building itself. Such areas are the dorms, the mess hall, the gymnasium, the auditorium, and the pool. Towards the back of the property lies a large, beautiful garden and a dense forest, which are perfect areas for students with powers more suited to nature and wildlife. The main building itself is where classes are conducted and generally where students will meet over the course of a regular day. There are several lounge areas, one per floor to be exact, where students can interact either between classes or during a break. The dorms are connected to this building, with the girls' dorm towards the left of the entrance and the boys' dorm to the right. The cafeteria sits about thirty or forty yards from the main building and is, of course, where all meals take place. It's a very expansive building with room for hundreds of students, and it contains several bars, each serving different types of food. Popular selections are Italian, Chinese, Salad, and Deli. The swimming pool is an Olympic-sized indoor pool where students can relax after classes are let out for the day. Several classes may take place here throughout the year, as students' powers require or electives are taken. There is a ton of sports and athletic equipment in the gymnasium for various athletic events and physical education. Several basketball hoops can be found in the gymnasium for the students who enjoy basketball. Wrestling and gymnastics are also set up in various stations as requested by students throughout the year.
The dormitory rooms are definitely designed for comfort, with friendly colors and comfortable furniture. Two students are assigned to a room and are permitted to decorate it as they please. These rooms are their rooms for the time they are enrolled in the school, so there really isn't a problem with painting the walls as desired. Between each pair of dorms is a master bedroom with two showers, sinks, and toilets. Each dorm room also comes equipped with a wireless internet connection and a modem, a small kitchenette, including a stove, fridge and microwave, and a main living room with a tv. Personal effects, such as video games, dvd players, and stereos, are allowed so long as the main dormitory rules are followed. All of the dorm rooms have hardwood flooring for ease of cleaning any messes, but carpets and rugs are allowed. Suggestions for improvement are taken at any time. The administration also takes requests for items, which are accepted or denied on a case-by-case example. This system is typically used for those kids whose parents have abandoned them and given guardianship over to the school itself.
About twenty miles in from the school is a good-sized town where students who graduate are free to move to and obtain jobs. Even while going to school, jobs can be taken with permission from the administration for some extra cash. This town serves as a home for people with powers from all over the world who wish to escape persecution and lead a free life. As such, it's almost always growing and expanding, with new stores set up as people try their hands at business. The school itself made generous donations to businesses starting up and for the construction of homes and, in return, receives several donations a year from the successful businesses.
