Heavily inspired by games like Super Robot Wars, Zone of Enders, Armored Core and Front Mission, Mobile Frame is my first serious attempt at creating a persistent universe in which to RP in. I've tried getting other RPs off the ground but eventually, all end in flames as people come and go. Frankly, I haven't been as active as I should have with some of my titles. Well, no more! I didn't want to create just another set of missions to play through, only to fall apart after the first arc. I wanted to give birth to a story universe of my own, as many of my favorite RPs have done, and one that I enjoy enough to keep it high on my priority list. That said, what exactly do I have in mind?
Mobile Frame revolves around a new age in the far future, where space colonization has become a reality. The Solar System is buzzing with activity as ships ferry colonists from planet to planet, eagerly seeking new lives, or itching at the desire to explore the universe. World powers merge, corporations prosper and scientific research is at an all-time-high. However, not everything is sunshine and rainbows. Tensions grow between Earth and colonist governments over resources, ethical conduct and ideological barriers. All the while, countless independent organizations vy for power. It is a time of both technological prosperity and international enmity.
Does this sound cliched to you? Well, it probably is, considering Gundam, Zone of Enders and many other franchises have much featured much of the same ideas. However, it is the settings of these very universes that I (and hopefully you) have come to appreciate and cherish; I, for one, enjoy that kind of setting. I hope that you'll read on and if you love mecha and space operas, you'll consider hopping on and taking Mobile Frame for a ride.
Mobile frames are large, bipedal machines used by mankind for a multitude of purposes, from construction to agriculture to weapon platforms. For this reason, they are touted as greatly versatile machines. Mobile frames used for war are commonly referred to as "mil-frames." Military mobile frame development is currently considered to be starting its 2nd generation. Most 1st generation frames have been designed with heavy, robust chassis - quite literally walking tanks. As the 2nd generation of frames takes center stage, new frames are being designed with lighter components and more emphasis on maneuverability. The 51st Combat Training Battalion in particular is undergoing evaluation of new models.
What are mobile frames?
The actual appearance of a mobile frame varies depending on the manufacturer. Some are relatively cubic in design, while others may have more rounded features. The 2nd generation has initiated a general shift in design to more aerodynamic, sleek chassis, but the development of 2nd generations is still very fresh. Models classified as 1st generation still make up the vast majority of frames for armed forces.
Simply put, The Insurgency is the first (and hopefully one of many) of the Mobile Frame saga's chapters. Our story revolves around a mobile frame test unit called the Prometheus Special Combat Training Group, part of the 51st Combat Training Battalion, stationed on Jupiter. Prometheus Flight's pilots are tasked with the evaluation of new mobile frame technologies and creation of combat tactics to suit them. Being a test pilot is a hallmark of a skilled officer and something many front-line personnel aspire to. However, the creation of new prototypes is bound to catch the attention of interested parties, for a myriad of reasons...
Mobile Frame: The Insurgency
Mobile Frame is to be enjoyed as your typical, free-form, roleplay. There are no stats to memorize, no dice to roll. All you need is a little creativity and a passion for the setting. I intend for Mobile Frame to feature lots of action, sure, but it should be story and character-driven first and foremost. I expect lots of interaction and relationships between characters; players will be a tight-knit group, not without their flaws, but having innate strengths as well.
As stated before, Insurgency is to be the first chapter of the Mobile Frame universe. Chapters will consist of a handful of sub-arcs, or scenes which divide the story into manageable chunks. As the story plays out, arcs will start and end as I determine. I will notify participants when arcs come to a close, and extend or shorten their length according to feedback.
Considering the nature of particular mobile frames, I will ask that those involved play intelligently and fairly. There's no need or incentive to powerplay or strive to kill everything in front of you. Likewise, even mobile armors have limits, and nobody's untouchable. I also ask that you be familiar with RPGuild for some time, and be comfortable writing a couple paragraphs per post. That said, I strive for quality over quantity. Nobody likes reading about your character daydreaming about her fiancee back on Earth for too long.
I ask that this RP be taken maturely and those involved maintain a regular presence, both OOC and IC. What is an RP without a cast, after all? I will most likely be making a group for all participants to join, housing background info, character sheets, synopsis of previous arcs for latecomers, etc. This way, all information regarding the Mobile Frame universe is organized in an accessible place.
To be continued...And now I wait to see who shows up! Feel free to drop me any questions about the universe, or the RP within here before we move on. Knowing is half the battle! Additionally, I could use some passionate folk who are willing to bounce ideas back and forth considering the setting. I'd love to share the background-building process with those involved; I know I get off to that sort of thing.
