There was sufficient interest after I posted a thread in the interest check forum so I'll be going ahead with this idea. The interest check can be found here.
This is somewhat my pet project and has been the subject of many of my various writings over the past... decade or so. Varying in form multiple times I have come up with a simpler idea which lends itself to a roleplay's setup.
2000 CE. The turn of the millennium saw more than just the move into a difficult to name decade; minor religious cults had preached about the Apocalypse, the Rapture, the Second Coming and various extraordinary events coming to pass but by and large they had been dismissed by the largely secular world. Unfortunately for humankind the cults were not entirely wrong. Strange creatures began to appear from various religious sites, both old and new. Any place with a place in mythology or any attached legend became a spawning ground for this intruders. Varying from impish monsters barely a foot in height to monstrous behemoths the world, understandably, was panic stricken and order broke down.
Then the military and all their advanced weaponry proved to be ineffective against the invading monsters and all hope was lost. The monsters began to increase in number and they seemed to gain strength from the slaying and consuming of humankind, their power spreading and pushing back the civilizations of men away from these formerly sacred sites.
2001 CE. News spread of a young man, aged 34, who had slain one of the weaker, impish monsters. He had managed this feat with the use of a carving knife when the creature had invaded his family home. More cases of the creatures being slain emerged: all by bladed or blunt weapons such as knives, hammers or improvised weaponry. Hope was kindled as the armies of every nation adapted to the threat and equipped their men with effective weapons.
2003 CE. Ground was retaken quickly from the invading monsters, whose sudden appearance was still inexplicable, as successful tactics were developed and the unorganized creatures were easily slain.
2005 CE. Many of the sacred sites had been retaken by humankind by the middle of this year with the monsters enclosed in small areas around those few sites still not under mankind's control. Morale for the 'war' was at an all time high with the end on sight; the unspeakable fear which had gripped the minds of many fading as quickly as it had come. Just as victory seemed assured humanoid creatures poured forth from the spawning grounds alongside more monstrous creatures. Working in groups and seemingly resistant to even the bladed weapons that had proven so effective until then, these creatures brought back the terror the creatures' first appearance had inspired.
2013 CE. Most of the world has fallen out of mankind's control. Either it has been taken by the invading creatures of shadow or else the land became indefensible and was abandoned to become a No-Man's land. The few holdings men still hold are heavily defended by the newly established Guardians; a force made up of those below the age of 18 at the turn of the millennium. For as of yet unknown reasons this generation are able to wound the newly arrived humanoid shadow monsters where any other man beforehand was unable to do so.
With the formation of this force and the treacherous position mankind maintains it was only fitting that the invading monsters also be named. And what an apt name for scourge of humanity, clad in shadow and often monstrous in shape; the Night Terrors.
This is a brief premise I jotted down a while back, there's obviously a fair bit of history between the lines. There will also be a great deal of questions people will wish to ask. Here are a few simple points to help make things clear with additions from those points raised in the interest check:
1. Participants will RP as Guardians or humans who fit the requirement to be in the Guardians (aged below 18 in 2000 CE).
2. Characters must be between the age of 15 and 30.
3. The sacred sites vary from ancient sites such as the Giza Pyramids and Stonehenge to modern Cathedrals. Any place with mythological, legendary, religious or other sacred significance is a candidate for a spawning ground. Do not be misled by the 'sacred' aspect; these sites could just as easily be the subject of urban legends or modern conspiracy theories.
4. Weapons effective against these monsters can basically summarized as pre-gunpowder. However melee weapons directly wielded by the user are more effective than a siege weapon.
5. The 'central' position of the RP is in Rouen (Normandy in North France. There are several reasons for this many of which I don't wish to explain right now. It does, however, have a degree of tactical advantage as well which should be reason enough for now).
6. The Guardians is somewhat a universal force so there will be mixed nationalities present but I don't want to over-complicate affairs by being entirely realistic on this point (i.e. almost all involved characters will speak English to a decent degree).
Description/Appearance: Images are acceptable with additional notes (e.g. height etc).
Guardian Corps: E.g. Artillery, infantry, archer, mounted, support etc.
Preferred weaponry: Remember that, so far, mechanised weaponry has proved ineffective (with the exception of the crossbow and siege engines).
Other: Anything else that doesn't quite fit in other categories.
jlensher:Name: Drake Armadyll
Age: 23, Gender: Male
Description/Appearance: Drake is tall and slim, standing at 180cm and weighing 75kg, with a solid muscular build. He has messy black hair that he keeps hacked short for convenience, brown eyes, pale skin and fine, angled facial features. He has numerous scars from various encounters with the Night Terrors, including one that runs down the left side of his face from his ear to his jawline. Like most Guardians he is usually wearing armour, which in his case means a set of armoured riding leathers in dappled browns and greens, with a belt and scabbard with the Guardians logo and a white cloak for winter.
Biography/History: Drake was born in Bristol to a normal English family in 1990, his father was a mechanic, and Drake spent most of his afternoons hanging around the workshop. He was ten when the Night Terror's first appeared, and his family was forced to evacuate to London as monsters came pouring out of Stonehenge with apparently no rhyme or reason. They spent a year in a refugee camp trying to scrape by before the military beat the monsters back and reclaimed Bristol. Soon they were able to move back to their old neighbourhood and try to piece together some semblance of their old lives. But it was not to be, as in the middle of 2005, the war turned again as the new, seemingly immune wave of monsters came pouring fourth.
This time, Drake and his family weren't so fortunate, as both of his parent's were killed in one of the initial attacks. Drake and his sister Isabella managed to hold out slightly longer before the city was once again evacuated. They took one of the motorbikes from the workshop and took to the road themselves, trying to stay ahead of the wave of people attempting to escape from the Terrors. They managed to reach the channel and hitch a ride across to France, hoping it would be better. Unfortunately the mainland was just as bad, and they moved from place to place for a year before they got separated in an ambush. Drake looked, but couldn't find any trace of his sister, so he eventually decided to head North and try to join up with the recently formed Guardians, hoping perhaps they would have information on his sister.
Drake joined the Guardians and became part of the Light Cavalry, which operates as scouts and skirmishers around the border of Rouen, bring back information and harassing marauders and Night Terrors, and salvage parts the Guardians need. because of his experience in a workshop, Drake helps repair and maintain the eclectic mix of vehicles used by the Guardians. He loves to tinker, and one of his projects is the stills where he produces fuel for the modified diesel engines to run on.
Guardian Corps: Light Cavalry/Scouts
Preferred weaponry: Sabre and compound bow
Avery Calhoun:Name: Saran “Gino” Jevdevic
Description/Appearance: Gino is a lean man to say the least and only those that know of his veracious appetites for food, wine, and song understand that the man is not starving for anything. Standing at an inch or two over six foot tall but only weighing between 140 to 150 pounds, depending how well he has eaten lately, he is a gaunt and lithe bundle of explosive energy that never seems to be lacking for momentum. His wiry frame, low body mass, and years of moving from place to place across the European continent give what little weight he maintains a muscular and chorded appearance though he possesses no great strength outside the limits of his body. His arms and legs are almost long enough to be awkward and the fingerless wool gloves he normally wears do little to hide the fact that the man has worked with his hands for much of his life. His clothing casts him as a solider that, due to an aching case of insurmountable wanderlust, left the life of the military and became the wandering gypsy he is today. Thick unruly and completely wild hair cascades from his head to his shoulders in black tangles and he always meticulously maintains a wide mustachio that tapers neatly at the ends, which are well past the corners of his lips. One of his most notable features is the smile that always seems to be just forming under that mustachio and his vibrant green eyes that spark with vitality even in the darkest of times. Well worn boots that have walked more miles than many cars have driven shod his feet and loose fitting comfortable pants a shade somewhere between khaki and olive, caused by wear, are held up by two thick belts that have a few pockets and pouches strapped here and there. He wears a black and yellow tank top under a military style field jacket with many patches and decals; some obnoxious, some militaristic, and others indiscernible, sewn all over the jacket in a pattern that represents nothing but chaos. He keeps a white hound’s tooth shemagh wrapped around his neck to accompany the many chords of leather and necklaces. Two things rest across his back, a beaten and heavily repaired guitar and a pack containing what he needs to eke his meager existence on the road. At his side he keeps a Cossack style Saber that he lifted from a museum in southern Russia after the first wave of Night terror attacks and a complement of knives are kept along his belt, in his boot, or in his pack for everything from utility to fighting.
Biography/History: Gino was born in 1985 in the city of Sarajevo, a child born at a very tumultuous time in a very dynamic place. His father was a wealthy government official that managed to navigate the ever fluid political upheaval of the time and his mother was an outspoken local artist of the time. Gino, despite his father’s involvement in the upheavals of the time, remained insulated from the troubles of the time. He attended schools, fenced at local clubs and gyms in Sarajevo, and was tutored in the arts by his mother and her friends. That all changed on April 5th, 1992 when Gino was seven and the siege of Sarajevo began. For 3 years, 10 months, 3 weeks, and 3 days Gino was trapped in the city of Sarajevo, subjected to running gun battles, artillery strikes, and sniper fire. His parents died in the first years of the siege, his father died early in the fighting and his mother was killed in the shelling shortly after. Gino survived by falling in with the paramilitary militias that roamed the city, allegiances changing weekly it seemed. When the siege was lifted in 1996 Gino had no family and drifted with the militias, some good and some very bad , for two years until falling in with a band of Bosnian Romani and drifting across all of Europe, the near East, and Russia. During this time Gino developed a love of music, food, wine, women, and any other indulgence of life he could partake in, becoming a Bohemian paragon.
In 2000 when the Night Terrors began appearing Gino was in Istanbul and witnessed some of the first of these creatures emerging. He was playing his guitar in a public square outside the Hagia Sophia when his song was interrupted by hundreds of terrified visitors and tourists stampeding from the religious monument followed by something Gino could only describe, to this day, as a dervish made of smoke and shadow. Gino spent the first year of the invasion drifting from place to place, avoiding direct conflict, and writing about what he saw and by the time the 2003 human offensive was underway his accounts of the Terrors and the battles with them caught the eye of a very unorthodox Officer based out of Rouen. Between 2004 and 2005 this Officer conscripted Gino to scout out the areas that the Terrors were coming from, document as much as he could, cause as much trouble as he safely could, and return to the encampment with the intelligence. This suited Gino’s wandering, survivalist nature and worked well until the renewed enemy offensive in 2005. Gino was caught in this resurgence of enemy forces and abandoned by retreating forces and for many years was thought lost until he turned up, late in 2012, walking through the countryside back to Rouen just in time to become part of the Guardians.
Guardian Corps: 2nd Long Range Patrol/Scout Program
Preferred weaponry: Cossack Saber that he utilizes with a good degree of skill due to his childhood fencing lessons and a light crossbow that he can employ but is no sharpshooter with.
Other: Gino is a man that reacts wholeheartedly to everything. He is slow to anger, trying constantly to turn every situation into revelry but once he does anger his past with ethic militias and isolated survival makes him a man capable of just about any violent act. He uses his hedonistic love of wine, women, and song as a way to cope with the terrible aspects of his past and hopefully suppress those aspects of his character.
Paera is a rather tall woman for her stature, around 1,75 cm and weighing 58 kg. She has a weak body constitution, with slim and long arms, legs and fingers, with a lightly dark olive skin against her nationality. Her mother was an Ethiopian anthropologist while her father a Greek scientist. Has a long and black hair such as ebony, bouncing in waves on her back. Paera has an oval face, with full and fleshy lips by a natural pale pink color; her nose is slightly arched, with dense eyelashes and big eyes by a dark copper color, her eyebrows being slightly arched. Does not have enviable shapes, but has a Ph.D. in science and chemistry. It is a simple woman with a slightly childish air. Is not different from other guardians by clothing, the only thing that makes her stand out is a medical coat. She is seen wearing a beige leather pair of boots, and a pair of dark slim jeans -she usually doesn't take part of action, just when is truly need it- and a grey t-shirt and the medical coat. From the reports of various people Paera does not speak very much, is a quiet and calculative person with words of wisdom. She is considered a prodigy because it has a photographic memory and a sense of curiosity that is quite impressive. It is a great help, both medically and psychologically. Often being considered too mature, but in this situation everyone is forced to be matured.
She was born on the sea, literally. Her mother was going to Greece when Paera was born. It was supposed to be one of the safest places, this is what they thought. She only spent 17 years with her parents in Athena. Her father had his own lab, and the Night Terrors began to be something amazing to him. He was mad enough to catch one and to examine. The Acropolis of Athena, an ancient site, which was the pride for Paera's father. He loved it to bones, to each piece of information he could get; truly a mad scientist. Everything she knows now, she does it from her parents, and were some true strict parents. Her childhood was among the books of science, inventions and first aid medicine. She lived underground, in a complex building like a maze.
It was her 17 birthday, when Paera's father caught, for the first time Night Terror. For years he studied them from afar, now, a change, he had one. But out of simple curiosity Paera just let the creature free. The Night Terror butchered her mother, she was saved by her father. She felt the cold claws on her back, how went throw her father's body as it was gelatin. Doesn't remember how was saved, she only knows a white room with an old lady beside her bed staring at her. She told Paera that was a miracle how she survived the attack.
For five years she continues her studies and she made a sort of a name among the survivors. Joined the Guardians from pleasure? For what, only, if there up in the sky still exist a God, he might know the answer.
Guardian Corps: Support Corp - First League ! ^^"
Preferred weaponry: Crossbow -she barely knows how to use it, has a lot of wounds on her fingers-
- Hates being considered weak or being protected, or even the worst, being treated like a child.
- It is developing new ways of killing the Night Terrors.
- Is a secret, but Paera is scared of darkness to bones.
- She has a long scar on her back from the first time she met a Night Terror
- Sometimes is considered a robot because it is never seen to sleep or eat.
