The morning was warm and bright, birds were singing their praise for the new and glorious day and already the smell of the morning’s bread being made had permeated the air. However there was one person who shied away from the suns penetrating light and warmth, a young child who groaning sought shelter further under her delicately embroidered cover. She managed to win a few minutes more of sleep before a small knock on the door heralded the arrival of her servant. Bustling in with more cheer than someone should be allowed in the morning the middle-aged servant trotted over to the curtains and with a cold proficiency swept them back filling the room with bright, inescapable sunshine.
Groaning again but this time with defeat Seraphina pried herself from the soft down mattress and sat up rubbing her eyes and managing to scowl at Martha the servant. Her long silver shimmering hair hung in tousled curls and her large blue eyes still full of the disorientation of having just been awakened. For a moment or two Seraphina just gazed around her bedroom as she attempted to wake up, it was the same as ever a large stone room, with comfortable, plush furniture. Her soft toys were scattered all around the room as were several fine dresses that she had been playing dress up in the day before, her walls and floor were both covered in thick rugs to insulate the room against the cool stones and set into the wall was a large stone grate where Martha knelt kindling a fire.
The as the warmth from the fire began to heat the room and the sunshine poured in from the high window Seraphina’s mind caught up with her situation and she sat herself up with an excited squeal. Today was the day she had been waiting for the last month, today was the day her father had said that if she could prove herself in archery and with her daggers she would be allowed to go out on her own for her first solo hunt. Well not solo, she was never normally alone, Vargas her father’s pawn was her near constant companion by her father’s command.
Speaking of Vargas it seemed he had heard her squeal from outside her room where he sometimes stationed himself, the door was gently pushed open as he stuck in his head, finding everything normal he retreated. Seraphina quickly disentangled herself from the sheets and scampered across the rug strewn floor to the wardrobe with Martha was attempting to restock with the abandoned clothes. Flicking through the garments Seraphina attempted to find her sturdy and warm practice clothes. However it was Martha that found what she was looking for, a long forest green tunic, green hosen and finely made but sturdy knee high leather boots. Every item of clothing was made of the finest material, both hard wearing and insulating. As Martha began to help her dress Seraphina could not help but twitch with impatient excitement.
“Now hold still m’lady otherwise you’ll be all twisted.” Martha said giving her a pretend look of reprimand.
“But Martha I’m just so excited, I have been training for this for ages… And when I pass I will get to go hunting and then…” Her small face became alive with a look of wonder as she envisioned her adventures. “I will slay a goblin and a troll and maybe even Griffin.” Seraphina finished in a hushed whisper her voice full of awe and determination. However this look was quickly thrown into a pout as a soft laugh escaped from Martha.
“Now, now m’lady you shouldn’t tell such tall tales. Such horrible creatures would gobble you up in a moment, only the brave dukes knights dare take on such terrible creatures.” Seraphina continued to pout moodily but stopped squirming, allowing Martha to dress her properly. She didn’t care what Martha said, her father had told her stories of his adventures battling the foul beasts that roamed this land and she knew if she just got the chance to prove herself, everyone would see what she could do, then they would be proud and stop treating her like just a little child.
Finally dressed Seraphina and Martha headed for the door to make their way down to the dining hall, her father insisted that the family should always take their meals together since they rarely got to see each other during the day. Seraphina had a bright determination burning inside her as her excitement mounted.
