Ardan is a world set in the medieval period where four countries have battled in the name of supremacy for centuries. Only now a new monarch has arisen and led the four nations to a peace settlement. Hoping to break free of the cycle of war a new joint initiative has been launched.
Each nation has contributed a portion of its territory to form a central, neutral zone in which the children of the major aristocratic houses is sent. The aim is to foster friendship between the future leaders of the countries, preventing a return to the constant state of war that has plagued the world for so long.
In this neutral zone the children of tomorrow learn how to wield their magic abilities, inherited through the aristocratic blood which flows through their veins. The heart of the neutral zone is now a sprawling city, built specifically for the purpose of housing the children of the nobility. At the centre of the city stands the academy, an enclosed campus encompassing a little over one hundred hectares of land. Grand buildings built in the various architectural styles of each of the nations provide accommodation, study halls and entertainment for the residents.
However, there is one factor for upset amidst all the positive steps towards a true and lasting peace. A common girl is entering the academy at the behest of the Queen who ushered in this era of cooperation. The purpose of this action is unknown but such a thing is unheard of; the common people are forbidden to use magic even if they were able to. Only those who have the blood of the nobility are capable of wielding magic, inherited from the first magi millennia past. The four countries are now preparing for a war which looms on the horizon; all now rests on the success of the academy.
So there’s the synopsis/intro/blurb. A bit more info down below.
The four nations are:
Elianst (capital of the same name. Queen Elena. To the North.)
This nation borders the Great North Sea, its lands a myriad of river networks creating a rich and fertile land. The capital is found at the centre of a lake into which the three major rivers feed. In a country founded in a land full of water it comes as no surprise that the majority of the nobility have an affinity to water magic; although many others are attuned to wind and are very capable sailors because of this. The newly crowned Queen of this country, Elena of House Mithran, is the one who orchestrated the peace talks.
Gatoukat (no real capital due to the volcanic state of the country. King Hardat. To the West.)
Studded with various volcanoes and the victim of repetitive earthquakes Gatoukat has always been a country with no permanent capital. One might expect a country of fire and destruction to have mages skilled in using the fire element but in fact earth affinity is more common. These uses are key to ensuring the protection of the few established towns and cities which are found in the historically less dangerous regions. Currently the government operates out of the city of Hansic which can be found close to a large group of hot springs, a phenomenon for which the country is famous for.
Frithsa (capital: Highwind. High Patriarch Granth. To the South-East).
Situated atop a long, relatively flat plateau this nation is hard to approach because of violent cross-winds which are especially acute at the steep paths which are the only accessible entrance to the country (except for the paths into the mountain only accessible to those with the correct blood running through their veins). Those with the skill to use magic are generally attuned to wind element although there is also a large proportion of earth element users also; the latter tend to be involved with the maintenance of the paths through the mountain below. The capital of Highwind, aptly named, is atop a slight rise on the plateau with wind whipping all around it. Ancient magic protects the city itself from the vast brunt of the wind but if the city were besieged it would be impossible to enter it as the cages operated by winch to enter the city would have been raised.
Astarn (also shares its name with the capital. King Athel. To the South).
A frozen forestland, Astarn is a place where a warm fire and shelter means survival and anything else means death. The cities which have been established are built of stone and are dotted with open braziers to prevent anyone walking through the streets from freezing to death. Strangely fire element users are very much the minority in this nation; wind, water and earth users are fairly equal in number. Plagued by constant conflict between the settled civilians and the raiding outcast tribes, Astarn has always been a less effective force in the field due to having divide its attention between foreign and domestic security.
Character sheets are a fairly standard affair:
Country of Origin (in this case this is the country from which they are immediately leaving to enter the academy, not necessarily the one they were born in)
Magic affinity (this will be ancestrally based, so whatever the rest of the family are capable of using as well. The father's line tends to be more dominant. No one can use magic until they have entered the academy and been tutored properly).
When writing your character sheet think of what your character's familiar might be but keep it to yourself (i.e. out of your character sheet) until they are summoned. Gives you some time to think what kind of familiar with what sort of personality best matches your character.
All characters should really be members of the nobility but I am open to other ideas, the 'children' mentioned above are students arriving at the academy and are aged between 16 and 20. As for the use of magic before the academy I am, again, open to alternatives. Please PM me before you roll a character with these alternatives so I can work it in properly (this world is stepped in aristocratic superiority and rigid rules).
Also, as you may have guessed, I will be controlling the common girl as she is central to the plot. However you can interact with her as needed, don't feel afraid to do so! I will be rolling a separate character myself whose sheet I will be posting later.
Any other questions, PM me or post down the bottom. IC will be up once we've got sufficient sign-ups and any questions people have are resolved.
Name: Henry Charlton
Country of Origin: Elianst
Magic affinity: Wind
Description: Henry is a dashing you man, square jawed with bright, smiling blue eyes and stands tall at a little over six foot. His brown wavy hair has the windswept look to it without being untidy. Of a strong physical build from hours of weapons training, Henry is the very image of a Royal Knight. He often dresses in the colours of his home country, a blue jacket with gold trimmings and white leather riding leggings tucked into knee-high black boots. When allowed outside of the academy he wears a longsword at his waist, scabbarded in a red leather case tipped with silver but otherwise unadorned.
Biography: Belonging to one of the foremost families in Elianst, Henry has much to live up to. His father is First Admiral, one of the most powerful figures dominating the political stage. Accepted into the Order of the Garter upon the new Queen's coronation, Henry has already gone some way to living up to his father's expectations. Now he is being sent to the academy, as all children of age from the noble houses must, to learn how to wield magic and attempt to forge bonds between the nations to prevent future war. The son of one of the main advocates of the Queen's new policy of peace, Henry had a key role to play in ensuring the academy's success and was determined not to fail.
Anything else: Nothing (as of yet).
Country of Origin: Elianst
Magic affinity: Water
Description: Henrietta is a small girl, standing at a mere 5" 1'. Her hair is a sandy colour, usually tied up into a small bun although now that she attends the Academy she usually wears it free and loose; to avoid looking like the servant she truly is. Slim of body and soft of hand, her job as handmaiden to the Queen for many years has softened her body; in any battle magic would be her only resort. Tending to choose plain clothes over anything fanciful, Henrietta runs the risk of looking like a servant. However, she feels out of place in the elaborate clothing the nobility wear and so opts for those garments which she is used to.
Biography: Much of Henrietta's past is unknown, specifically her origins and her family. Having worked for the royal family for most of her life, raised alongside the Queen, she has become a close friend and confidant of her Majesty. Although not of noble birth, Henrietta was hand-picked by the Queen to attend the Academy under the guise of one of the nobility. Over the years of serving the Queen, Henrietta has become acquainted with Henry and has confused feelings for the young nobleman.
Anything else: A big, big secret!
