Firefly: The Ashes of a Phoenix
Link to the OOC
"You know Jack, it's just been one of them days." Captain Caden Hael spoke almost sarcastically to his friend, who was sitting across from him cleaning a disassembling a pistol to make sure that every inch of the gun was clean before they landed, the friends name was Jack Dalton and he was also the First Mate of their ship the Phoenix. It really had been one of those days, the Captain knew it, the crew knew it, and it didn't seem as though there would be a gorram chance in hell that they could change that luck now. To be honest, the day had started out brilliantly, with the Phoenix and her crew on their way to make a good chunk of platinum from their first job in what seemed to most of them like ages. They had been hired to infiltrate the headquarters of one of the most organized crime syndicates in all of the Border Planets, steal something that could be explained as "priceless", and get out without anyone even knowing it was gone. The item in question was a hard-drive, not your average run-of-the-ship hard-drive, but rather one that contained enough information about illegal activity to make an information broker Go shi (shit) all over themselves, and the man who had employed them was willing to pay a pretty amount of platinum for the job. By this time today they were all supposed to be rich and happy, for the time being at least, and they all know that jobs like that one only come into play every once in a long while...and that was if you were lucky. Everything had worked out, the job was almost done, and the crew was on their way to a planet called Three Hills known for the buy and trade of illegal or black-market merchandise, where their employer had so desperately wanted them to meet on the top of the hour...not sooner...no later. Everything was shiny, but then came the trouble.
Just as they were about to be in an hours reach of Three Hills they were intercepted and ambushed by bounty hunters seemingly more out for blood than profit. Forcefully detouring from their course, and running for their lives the crew skillfully lost them after a chase that took them hours out of the way of their intended destination. All had been lost...literally...because after the attack had subsided and they had barely escaped with their lives they found that their precious cargo, the hard-drive they were on their way to sell, had been damaged from the skirmish, and it wasn't the only thing, the ship itself had just been through hell, its survival was a miracle at all, if it wouldn't have been for the sheer talent and brilliance of their pilot Ariel and their engineer Tess they would've been dead by now, but still the damage was severe enough that they were going to have to land...and soon. Unfortunately for the crew the nearest place is a moon of Three Hills called Conrad, a tourist heaven filled with tropical islands, palm trees, condos, and enough retired businessmen and politicians to run a small country...it was not the kind of place that people like Captain Hael commonly visited. The Captain squirmed a little as the memories of today's events flooded through his mind, the reality of it all was enough to put anybody in a bit of a bad mood...himself included. He blamed himself, because if wasn't for his bounty on Ariel spreading like gorram wildfire then those Gou cao de (dog f**king) hunters would've never been after him. He could've gotten his entire crew killed...just another day on the job he reckoned, and worst of all the little delay had caused them to miss their meeting with their employer...not that the venture would've gone smoothly seeing how the attack just about blew the damned thing to pieces to begin with! When he finally came back to the here and now, after forcing the negativity down for the time being, he realized that he was still waiting for a response from his First Mate. "Jack! Are you even listening to me? If you keep scrubbing that gorram barrel you ain't gonna' have a gun left to fight with!" The man stopped his obsessive cleaning, putting the parts of his weapon gently down onto the table. He looked his friend, his Captain, in the eyes for a moment before responding.
"This isn't the time for your damn sarcasm Captain." Jack Dalton said, his face going from its usual pale to a bright red. "I needed that pay...my family needed it. What am I going to do about my daughter now? Her treatment starts next week and I have nothing to pay for it with...those Alliance assholes aren't going to cure her if all we have to pay them with is your gorram sarcasm Abe! If they don't get the money...they'll cancel her treatment and you know what happens then..." Captain Hael listened to his friends words...taking each and every one of them as personally as he could, this was his fault, he knew that, and he knew that he would find a way to make it right...he had to. He didn't even respond to his friend with words, just a simple apologetic nod, but his point got across to his First Mate. "I'm sorry Captian...I know...I shouldn't be taking it out on you. If it wasn't for that Zhan Dou De Yi Kuai Rou, Badger, that son of a bitch, you never would've been pinned for the Ariel job....I'm just worried ya know? About Keirah...she's not even eleven and she's about to..." The disgruntled man's words stopped abruptly, his angered face shifting to one riddled with fear and sadness. Captain Hael gazed at him, worried about his friend and is family; he heard the man's words again, the fact that he had called him "Abe"...he hated that name, and if anyone else in the entire verse had called him that he probably would've shot them dead in their spot, but the man was the closest thing to a brother that he had ever had...the first true friend he had ever found, and he hated to see him go through this, especially when it was himself he blamed for the screw up. Yeah Badger truly was the reason the job went south back then, but he didn't care; he had never made excuses before and he wasn't going to start now.
"I promise Jack...I'll find us another job." the Captain declared, vowing to his friend.
"I know Abe, I know. You always do." Jack replied to his captain, a half-forced smirk now across his face. "You better get in there Captain, I'm sure the crew's wait'n to hear where we go from here."
"Yeah I reckon' I better...maybe you should get some rest, it ain't long until we land." Captain Hael, after exchanging a nod if understanding with his friend put his hands down upon his knees and forced himself from the comfort of the chair, standing, then stretching, and began making his way out to the lounge, screaming "Crew meeting, right gorram now!" as he did so.
