"Arza stepped into the tavern, this was neutral territory, where folks of both sides could rest in peace, whether to stop for a night on their travels or perhaps check for work, that was why he was here. Neutral territory boards often had bounties for both sides, and he needed all the opportunity he could find, mercenary parties were soaking up work at an alarming rate and there was only so much an individual could do.
As he perused the posters on the board, he noticed one for a particular person. Headhunting bounties were not especially rare, but out in neutral territory they usually were not posted for fear of assassination. This was to kill a neutral party who had significantly pissed off both sides. Arza unpinned the bill from the wall and rolled it up to place in his pocket.
'hey, hunter, that bounty will be mine, so just give me the bill now.' A brute of a man, clearly another hunter, loomed over the elf. Arza wasn't especially short, but elves usually don't get over six feet in height, and this human was definitely over that.
'I'm sorry I didn't see it in your hands, so it is mine... Care to contest it?' A smile like a dagger played across his face, and as soon as that was gone. He was confident enough in his skills, especially to outmaneuver such a large opponent. There was a crowd forming, and jeers for the two bounty hunters to take it outside.
Arza stepped out with his rival, they stood about ten paces apart on the dirt road. As he put his hand on his weapon he got a glimpse of the other man's massive axe. Making a rapid tactical decision, he pulled the halberd from his back and leaped into the air with it, throwing it with a spin like a wheel directly at his opponent.
That was just a distraction
As the polearm left his hand, he quickly reached into a pouch at his side and pulled out a glowing red sphere, the magic faded immediately with use, but so did Arza. High Speed Movement was a specialty of his, he appeared behind his opponent right as he deflected the halberd, but Arza already had a sword at his throat. The duel was over, and he was free to hunt this bounty.
This is a world of a war, between two nations, of bounty hunters and mercenaries, working on both sides and occasionally neither, and of the people caught between it, who have no interest in war at all. The Roleplay will focus on the Bounty Hunters, one of the defining features of the world. And their exploits, occasionally for the factions and occasionally their own.
As you see in the narration, magic exists but works in a strange way. Magic can be channeled by anybody but takes significant energy, very few people are capable of using it on demand, instead, most find small gems that resemble the materia from Final Fantasy 7, you can charge the gems with one specific spell and they will hold one use of it, after that they must be recharged. The charging process takes time and thus is impractical in the middle of a fight.
I haven't worked out the rest of the details yet, but rest assured some traditional fantasy tropes will work their way in, such as the races and other details of the world. I'm also terrible at nation building, so if somebody who enjoys that would contribute I would love that.
