SEASON ONE – EPISODE ONE
The Other, Other Meat
He looked out across the street from the window, it was a cold night, one in which the moon was the star of the show. As he looked he did not speak he only thought on the moment at hand.
“You know… we really should leave this place… it’s not safe…” it was one of his group; there were five of them on this night and he was their leader, he was in charge of their safety and he was in charge of completing their task.
“You mean Point Pleasant? Or this sweet suburban neighbourhood?” He smiled but he knew what she meant. She did not see the humour in his remarks.
“They’re coming… maybe not tonight but they are and when they do… me, you and this little family of ours is…” He gave her a stern look almost freezing her where she stood and completely taking the power from her sentence “I… I’m just saying… the demons, the monsters… we can’t beat them…” he said nothing and they both just looked out of the window together.
“You leave… I have no use for the weak, only the strong… that’s why we’re here tonight isn’t it? You leave with the rest and when they come… we, the strong, will be ready…”
He turned around and smiled to her nodding toward the door and she slowly backing away nodded a sign of respect as she opened the door to leave. He had business this night and therefore had no time for weak people. Walking into the next room her saw six people, both male and female, gagged and bound kneeling on the floor. They looked up at him and whimpered as he scoured the room to see the demons that stood before him. Their faces changed from their usual human selves and their foreheads and brows pronounced along with their sharp monstrous teeth showing their true demonic visage that lived beneath the veil of humanity.
He stood still and looked around the room before taking action and then he stepped forward knowing what had to be done, understanding the next step towards defeating the monsters and demons that were threatening to kill him and his group. His face changed to show his inner demon like the others, he stood before them with the face of a vampire and the heart of a leader, he smiled to his minions at the sight of the men and women on the ground and licked his lips from right to left resting on his fang for moment before closing his mouth.
“Well ladies and gentlemen… let’s get started…” as he stepped forward and picked up one of the women from the back of the head completely lifting her off the ground and bringing her throat to his teeth, he halted for a moment and turned to his group “oh… Alice, she just left, hunt her down and kill her for me…” one of his minions nodded and left the room as he proceeded to feed.
Catherine walked down the pathway toward the school entrance, it hadn’t been long since she had discovered her powers and been contacted by the Watchers council in England. Since then life had been a bit of a blur with teachings of vampires, demons and other things that go bump in the night. Following that there was all the information concerning her role in this new world filled with monsters, ghouls, impending doom and her charge to protect the world from them.
The news had hit her world with a great force and hit it so hard that it had completely flipped it upside down; she had a new school and a new town to live in. It had all been arranged by the Watchers, however their contact had been mostly through telephone and various books they sent her. It was her first day at her new school and she felt more nervous about that than the thought of fighting the undead. School was a warzone and she had clawed and fought her way through her previous school, she had the scars and the battle wounds but all that meant nothing right now… right now she was the new kid and the new kid always got the same treatment…
“Hey… you’re the new girl right?” Catherine looked to see a small slender blonde girl standing before her, her hips cocked to the side and her smile crooked and cheeky, she considered how the girl looked like a drug dealing Cheshire cat and quickly moved on.
“Right…” Catherine answered, she wasn’t new to the game; she had played it before. The new girl had to show her dominance and display her superiority in front of her peers, who were quickly gathering to see what was about to happen “I’m Catherine… and who are you exactly?” Catherine didn’t care for games.
The girl smiled, shrugged her shoulders and waved her arms shortly before hugging the life out of Catherine and walking with her toward the school. The crowds started to disappear and as they left and dispersed the faces of disappointment and annoyance were widespread. The two girls walked up the steps and as Catherine looked around taking in her new surroundings she was struggling to pay attention to what the girl was saying. Her name was Chase, she was the “it” girl at the school and was head of the cheer leading squad and blah blah blah, Catherine had no time for it and she had no interest in it but she also had no interest in creating enemies at her school so she smiled and she laughed and she giggled her way through the conversation.
As they walked through the school they were approached by a short stodgy looking man, he had an air of authority and the look of a man who lived at the height of stress and thrived in it. He walked over to the pair of girls and addressed them both.
“Welcome to Pleasant Point School Catherine… I cannot explain how glad I am to see you making friends already” he nodded to Chase “and thank you Chase for showing her the ropes here at our humble school…” He was the principal of the school; she should have guessed that much and he was right, the school was small but renowned for getting results and producing high achievers. She had been failing her classes and now with the news of being the slayer that was only going to get worse but just for once it was nice to see that not all schools were war zones and not all schools were places filled with bullies and domineering self-obsessed students. “Anyway, you’re very welcome here Catherine and I hope to see you thrive here… for now though there is an important call for you in my office from the local library something about your volunteer work? So glad to see you getting involved in the town spirit already” he smiled and sounded exited “I have great hopes for you!” He waved the two to follow him as he walked towards his office “We can get this all cleared up before classes’ start I’m sure…”
The two girls and the principal entered his office and he proceeded to pass her the phone, smiling like an excited child the entire time.
“Hello…” she said confused as to the reason for the call, she hadn’t asked to volunteer at the library and she didn’t see any reason for them to call her. She realised who it was just before he spoke and she almost kicked herself for not figuring it out sooner.
“It’s me… It’s Mr William B. Cooper…” she smiled at the prospect of this very posh sounding Englishman introducing himself using his full name.
“Well, I know you want to speak to me about this volunteer thingy right? Anything I can help with?”
“Listen to what… er… to what I am about to say and listen well…” she smiled again at how dramatic but nervous his tone was “I will be there as soon as I can… but it is of upmost importance that you do not… and I repeat… do not do anything until I get there, go to school and follow normal routine but until I start your training you are a civilian… do we understand each other?”
Catherine hadn’t fought a vampire or anything else for that matter but now she had been given the speeches on the demons and creatures that plagued humanity she was eager to help those she could. It was a great strength she had been given and it was her weapon to wield and her weapon to save lives with. After everything that had been said to her she struggled with the idea of not going out and helping but he was right; she had no training and was new to the idea of slaying.
“Look… I hear you, I really do, I mean, let’s face it I’m new to the whole idea of erm you know, volunteering and all that but I really am eager to help, I really do just want to make a difference you know…” she saw the principal’s eyes filling with promise with every word she spoke.
“There is something extremely strange happening in Pleasant Point Catherine… something is coming… something bad, Slayers are usually younger than you and are usually trained for years before facing the evil hordes…” He started to stutter and the dramatic nervousness seemed to grow “listen here, you must be briefed you must be trained and you must be prepared and you right now, well, you’re not ready… have I made myself clear?”
“Yes… loud and clear al’capi-tan…” she hung up the phone and took a second to let the information settle, she said she understood him, she said that he had made himself clear but she did not say that she was going to stay in and play nice. She was the Slayer and she had no interest in letting people die because she had to sit around waiting for her watcher. She put her smiley game face on.
“Okay… so thanks for letting me use the phone…” Chase walked over and took her by the hand leading her out of the office as the class bell went off signalling that they were about to start.
“Quickly come on!” Chase said gripping her hand even tighter and speeding up to an almost jog. She turned so many corners in a flood of students, noises and movements and unfamiliar faces surrounded her. The confusion had barely set in before she found herself being led to the top of a dark staircase with Chase standing behind her “this is to remind you of who is in charge here…” it was Chase with her evil grin showing as she closed the door behind Catherine. With all Catherine’s speed and agility it would seem that she had been tricked by a school girl and now found herself locked in the dark at the staircase leading downward toward the basement. She banged on the door but did not want to cause any damage; that was the last thing she needed to be questioned about.
“Help! Let me out!” She banged on the door and shouted for someone to help her realising that she was wrong and that this ‘humble’ and ‘nice’ school was just the same as any other.
