The IC is up: Here
Even among those born with magical talent, a few are singled out as fortunate: those born as planeswalkers. Those born with the gift are granted long-life and an incredible wellspring of power to draw upon, but those are just the side benefits. The true gift of the planeswalker is what gives them their title: their ability to shed this world completely and roam the infinite number of worlds in the multiverse. Truly creatures outside of fate, planeswalkers have an absolute freedom not granted to even the most talented mages. The inevitable rarity of such powers means that there are few indeed who can be turned to as authorities on the subject. Most of the planeswalkers born of our world have, by necessity, been self taught, and thus failed to reach their full potential. In fact, it cannot even be speculated how many have lived out their whole lives without knowing the true extent of their gifts.
-Platinus, Histories of the Planes.
Magic exists, this much should be obvious. A long time ago, it was a part of everyday life, and man lived alongside fantastic beasts and crafted wonders tens of thousands of years ago. We lost all that in the calamity. It's a long story, and a sad one, but not one I have time for today. Something happened which drained all the Mana, the basic energy of magic, from this world. The disaster plunged the world into an ice age, and mana-bearing creatures were either killed or forced to hide in other worlds. Still, even though magic can't be used easily here, people are still being born with the talent. Which is exactly why I'm talking to you. You are a planeswalker. Somewhere, locked inside you is the innate ability to cross over to other worlds. This makes you not only extremely rare, but also potentially extremely powerful. However, without training, it's unlikely you'll ever amount to much. Uneducated, you'll either live the rest of your life as a second-rate hack, or you'll end up killing yourself through reckless use of your power.
That's why Myrrdin founded the Academy. You'd probably know him as Merlin, from the Arthurian Legend. He wasn't earth's first planeswalker, or it's most powerful, but he was certainly the one with the most charitable vision. The Planeswalker academy was founded to train earthborn planeswalkers such as yourself, free of charge, with the understanding that you could be called upon should our world ever fall into danger. It's your choice. Should you choose to accept, certain measures will be taken to ensure all of your current obligations are voided. Be warned, this would preclude your opting out of the program at a later date.
Before our recorded history, the world wasn't as barren and savage as our history books would have us believe. With magic a widespread resource, we were able to build a global civilization that lasted a thousand years. Humans, elves, dragons and hundreds of other “mythical” creatures lived together in relative stability, if not always absolute peace. Then came the cataclysm. An echo of a cosmic event which wrecked an untold number of universes, ours was spared the worst of it. However, our magic was snatched away, our world made unable to hold mana in any great amount. The Elves, who couldn't live without mana, opened a pocket dimension where they could shelter and live on. Only the richest clans could afford the price, and most of the elvish civilization was abandoned to die. Sustained only by cold fury, a few thousand made it to an underground sanctuary, there to tap the leaking mana of the earths core. Dragons, without magic, lost their ability to fly and breath fire, and despite their long life, were sitting ducks for every errant fool who wanted to make a name for themselves in the middle-ages. Those who could not escape to other dimensions were eventually hunted down by over-zealous knights. Humanity, however, was the least effected. The loss of magic destroyed their civilization, and ushered in the ice ages, but we still flourished, spreading out to create the entire magic-less world we know today.
Pretty boring on the outset, but with a species wide talent for survival were many of the more “advanced” races failed. We have the lowest magical potential of the sentient races, but the highest rate of planeswalker talent manifesting. A normal human might live to a hundred if they're lucky, but the gift of the planeswalker can keep a human up and kicking at the ripe old age of three hundred. If you don't want to rely on species to make your character interesting, then play a human.
The descendants of those who managed to buy a place in their pocket dimension, a place called Tuatha De Danaan. Tuatha De Danaan is a massive living forest, which provides the shelter and mana the elves need as well as the mana to hold the dimension open. Due to the limited space, population is monitored carefully, and permission to have a child is only granted to a select few. The resulting state is almost a utopian fascist one, governed by a powerful high council. All elves have some magical talent, and can be expected to live four or five hundred years if left to their own devices. A planeswalker, however, can expect to live up to nine-hundred. Elves mature at about two thirds the rate of humanity, for example, a 21 year old elf could be expected to have the physical and mental development of a human 14 year old.
The descendants of the poor, or the clans too proud to give up this world easily. They make their home in a massive network of underground caverns beneath the Andes. They've manages to keep themselves isolated by magically collapsing the tunnels of any miners unlucky enough to dig near their home. Without the pure magic available to their lighter cousins, a dark elf is considered lucky to live to three hundred, although a planeswalker will live nine-hundred years if they die of old age. Most of their society is influenced by their lack of resources, and cannibalism isn't uncommon among the poorer class. They also have a strong dislike of the high elves who stranded them here, especially since many of the founding clans sacred artifacts were stored “for safekeeping” in Tuatha De Danaan. Elves mature at about two thirds the rate of humanity, for example, a 21 year old elf could be expected to have the physical and mental development of a human 14 year old.
Great big flying lizards. Dragons are functionally immortal, but all of them are planeswalkers, so that may have something to do with it. Dragons age very slowly, any age under a hundred is considered largely infantile. They are at least two hundred before their potential starts to manifest itself. Dragons can shape-shift at will, and any dragons attending the academy are asked to please retain a humanoid form which is not a distraction to classmates or faculty. Because they grow very slowly, a child of two-hundred may only be the size of a horse when in dragon form. It takes many centuries before they attain their full legendary size, but they never stop growing. A two-hundred to three-hundred year old dragon would be appropriate to this RP, but must be an orphan, or have some reason their parent is not training them.
Humans born with a dual spirit, on human, one animal. On earth, they show very little of their second form, due to it requiring mana to manifest. As such, a werecreature only transforms on peak mana days, such as full-moons or Samhain, holding a human form for the rest of their lives. With mana present however, they tend to display an aspect of their second form at most times, whether that's ears, oddly covered eyes, or even a tail. This talent is not passed on by bite, you can only be born with it. Werecreatures age at exactly the same rate as humans.
Vampirism is a magical curse created by a wizard who wanted to reach immortality. It is a parasitic creature that attaches itself to a persons aura, and grants their body incredible benefits in exchange for feeding off the aura of others, specifically by drinking their blood. A vampire isn't weak against holy water, crosses, garlic, sunlight or any of those other things, but can be killed by just doing enough damage. The power a vampire is granted is simply enhanced speed, strength, regeneration and agelessness. A vampire is turned by drinking the blood of of another vampire, and cannot age beyond the moment when this happened. Vampires are strictly forbidden from becoming students at the Academy, any who wish to join will have to hide the aura taint from some incredibly experienced faculty members. If you want to play a vampire, run it by me first.
Appearance: (If you could include a text description with whatever picture you use, that would be helpful, images are often blocked on the internet service I use. Military shit.)
Aspiring special traits/Talents:
Note: It's ok to have a character who knows about magic, just as much as it's ok to have a character who knows absolutely nothing. Due to the rarity of planeswalkers, the skill and age range acceptable in a class is quite large.

Feel free to ask any questions you like. I have a whole set of faculty sheets set up for the teachers I'll be playing, but thought I'd just let you meet them individually.
Name: Aloiene Y’ridnae (alo-ween ee-rid-nay)
Species: High Elf
Appearance: Aloiene has long, golden-blonde hair braided at the top of her head in a French crown style, the remaining hair straight and flowing down to the small of her back. Her eyes are a chestnut-brown color with a gold hue. In regard to her facial structure, it is very fair and fae-like, the beauty standard among high elves. She is tall and slender, her body decorated and adorned almost at all times with high fashion from Tuatha De Danaan, mostly consisting of flowing dresses embroidered with intricate patterns, though she has some more progressive styles from designers she considers, “Visionary,” in her wardrobe.
History: Aloiene was born and raised to parents that had long since resided in Tuatha De Danaan. For the longest time her parents had not wanted children, but growing more emotional in their older years petitioned the High Council for permission to have a child. They had no worries of getting permission as her parents had familial connections within the Council; as such, their request was processed swiftly and soon after Aloiene was born.
She was raised in luxury for her entire life, dining on the finest fruits of the De Danaan working class’ labor. She was educated by a tutor on most subjects of importance in Elvish high society: protocol, poetry, literature, dance, faith, fashion, and, most importantly, magic.
Personality: Haughty, spoiled, snobbish, and proud. Aloiene is a very talented and beautiful elf and she knows it, often talking down to others that don’t meet her exhaustively high standards in a passive aggressive manner at best or with palpable and specific disdain and venom at worst, considering most people, especially humans, not worthy of being in her presence. These standards include being a high elf of standing, being a gifted mage, and having a sense of fashion. Surprisingly, or, perhaps, not so much, she is a popular figure in Elvish high society and has many friends in high places.
Becoming friends with her is difficult to say the least, but once her trust is earned, she is one of the most loyal beings one could have at their side. Toward her friends she is much less icy, but still holds no punches if they mess up, outlining what they did wrong specifically. In these cases, she means no harm, but just wants her friends to improve.
Special traits/Talents: Aloiene is an extremely talented mage, specializing in light/holy magic and preventing negative effects from hostile spells from happening to her and her allies. She also is charismatic and beautiful, being able to charm her way through many situations.
Name: Ciro Ettore
Appearance: He's short, about 4'5". He has dark, nearly black, eyes. He has black hair and white skin. He is very thin, almost to an unhealthy degree. He wears black shirts and pants, and has a matching, once again black, cloak he sometimes puts on over that.
History: Cirino Ettore was born before magic left the world. He grew up with his mother and father in a small coastal village. He was abducted and made a meal by a vampire one night, but in his struggle to free himself, he bit the vampire that was draining him. The rush of power was enough for Cirino to fight back and escape. The vampire didn't bother chasing him, and didn't return to the small village. Cirino lived as normal for a few days after that, until the hunger became too strong. Unable to control himself, he bit his mother and drained her. His father tried to kill him when he saw what he had done, but Cirino defended himself and accidentally killed his father. He fled his home. Being attacked and then murdering his family are the two events he would say made him who he is. They are certainly what kept him from embracing his bloodlust and becoming a mindless monster.
Ever since then, Ciro has wandered from place to place, just filling the time. He studied magic and its applications for centuries, becoming quite skilled. He also got good at hiding the fact that he was a vampire from the world. He still had to drink blood, but he never killed anyone doing it after that first time. He drank as little as he needed to in order to survive. By vampire standards, he was practically starving himself to the brink of death. That might be why he survived the cataclysm. All of the other vampires who were used to the endless mana they got from each kill now had to kill every day for a fraction of the energy. It was no wonder they were killed off so quickly.
But Ciro survived the death of most of his kind relatively unscathed. He'd grown accustomed to the hunger that drove his brethren crazy. He was among the small population of vampires that survived to carry the curse into the coming era.
He didn't have any particular reason for wanting to sneak into the academy. He was just bored, and he thought it would be a good way to waste a year or so. The fact that he was forbidden only made him more interested in getting inside.
Personality: Who Ciro is on the outside is very different from whom he is on the inside. On the outside, he is a young boy who just happens to have a talent for anything related to magic. He acts energetic and cheerful, and loves pulling pranks and getting into trouble. He always looks on the bright side and tries to get others to do the same. Cold this boy turn around and change the mind he was born from?
On the inside though, he is tired. He's lived for so long. Ciro's ageless mind is that of an outside observer to the passage of time. He is incredibly introspective and philosophical at times. He almost never feels any positive emotions, regardless of what his outer persona may show. Apathy, sorrow, depression, fear, anger; that is what he feels on the inside. He is also insane, though he is aware of the fact and considers it perfectly normal for someone in his position.
It could be said that he has a split personality, if he wasn't aware which one was the fake.
Special traits/Talents: He can completely hide any trace of his mana, even as he's actively using magic. He is a skilled magic user when he doesn't have to worry about hiding his identity, and his specialty is defensive and evasive magic, though he can use many weaker spells. He can move quickly and quietly, as well as see in the dark. All of his abilities, magical and physical, become many times stronger if he's drank blood recently, but using blood-mana for power will make him have to feed again that much sooner. This state doesn't last very long though; only a minute at the absolute max after draining a person to near death.
Fun fact: his name means "defender of the sun"
Name: Elliot Lindberg
Species: Werecreature (Bear Aspect)
History: Elliot was born in Oregon, but was raised in cities and towns all along the Rocky mountains. Due to his parents being Werefolk they had to move every 2 to 3 years or so due to their drastic trasformations on Blue Moons, full moons that extremely effect werecreatures to the point where they transform totally into their animal aspect forms. Where on regular full moons they turn into the stereotypical Anthropomorphic selves, Humanesque hulking figures with fur, ears, claws, paws, and etc. Elliot regularly switched schools, lost contact with friends, and periodically manifested magic on a small scale that would land him in trouble and ridicule. Once in a good while his parents would find a town with a school that had fellow magic-sensitive people among them. A few even a teacher or two working their that gave Elliot lessons in mana. Then came Senior year. On the full moon following Elliot’s 18th birthday, during his transformation his parents noticed a change in his aura. A powerful force came through that told them their son was different. They realized that their son was a planeswalker, one of the veritable few with greater power than that is normally imagined. So they sent him to the Planeswalker Acedemy.
Personality: Quite an easy guy to get along with. Not one to make friends with so easily though. He will try to make friends, but after a while grows weary of having to move again. Despite all that he likes to get to know people. Likes to tell jokes, read, and practice his cooking skills. Seems to always be hungry which helps the latter. Tends to be over protective of nature, but that comes with the gift of his aspect and the bit of training.
Special traits/Talents: Control over plants, insects, and small animals like birds, squirrels, bats, and such. Dabbles here an there with healing magic. Adept at a talent he calls Sonic Roar, where he collects as much mana as he can into his lungs and releases a sonic boom.
Name: Nic Smith
Appearance: Nic is 6' even and 130 lbs. He's lanky, more jutting bones than muscles. His mess of brown hair is kept to two inches in length, short enough that it won't get in his light-brown eyes, and Nic hasn't found a comb or brush yet that can win against it. Not that it matters too much, since his fashion sense is about the same: jeans and t-shirts make up most of his wardrobe, then some shorts for when he plays soccer. He's got excellent teeth, radiant on those occasions he'll actually smile enough to show them.
History: He's adopted. That's the first thing of note. Second is that Sarah, his adopted sister, is 15 and quite the beauty already. So much so that, when he was told he could leave Earth to learn magic, Nic was packed and gone as fast as he could. Separated by an entire dimension, Nic is hoping he can stop crushing on his little sister. He wants to be a good brother, so he's trying to deny his feelings for Sarah that go beyond that.
But, that bit of weirdness aside, Nic is a geek. He excels at physics especially, and hopes that a planeswalker will be able to explain why and how electrons function. He played soccer, had a part-time job at an electronics store, read a lot of books (and sis-con/bro-con manga), and never once considered that magic might be real before he was taken to the Academy.
Personality: Nic's an engineer at heart. If something is wrong, he needs to find the solution. It's a wonderful mindset for physics and computers, but not so much with people. He speaks when he feels it's appropriate or he has some necessary information to transfer.
Aspiring special traits/Talents: Physics. Manipulation of, eventually.
Name: Ellie Orleans
Description: While Ellie was born as a man, he's always had the lithe body of a woman, and that is the role he's chosen for himself ever since he turned 13 and started to develop breasts. He stands at about 5'7, with mid-length red hair and shockingly cyan eyes, complimenting his fair skin tone nicely. Generally speaking, he's fond of skirts, dresses and the like, and because of his nature, the flashier the outfit the better. His physical appearance is jaw-droppingly feminine, but due to his poor nutrition, certain features are lacking in the size to complete his image. If one was to pay attention to his pupils or closely examined his teeth, they'd almost certainly notice his inhuman traits, although it would be difficult to attribute them to Vampirism unless they had prior experience with Vampires.
History: Ellie was born of a vampire father and a human woman, so naturally, his life would be as perilous as it was depressing. While he was born with talent, his father couldn't see past his human blood, and abandoned him almost moments after he was born. His mother was struck with grief, believing that if she got rid of the baby, her lover would return, so that's exactly what she did. She abandoned her son to the hands of a local orphanage, and they accepted him grudgingly, raising him up among the other orphan children as if he were human. Over time, the other children grew to fear him, and he used this to gain control over them, making them do his bidding and punishing them when they disobeyed him. This controlling nature went unnoticed by the sisters at the orphanage, so his reign went unchecked, the other children dared not cross him. He never felt like he fit in with the others, he felt...different from them, he was stronger, there was never any reason for him to fit in.
He grew older like the others, but when he reached the age to begin middle education, he begun to realize that he looked like a girl. The thought had occurred to him before, but he had passed it off as just being pretty. Flustered, he continued to identify as a boy for a few weeks, but a group of boys who had only recently arrived at the orphanage saw him as an easy target. Soon, he was being bullied daily, he was caught utterly off his guard, not expecting anybody in that place to be capable of resisting him. In due time, he found where they slept and beat them into submission, but their words stuck with him. It wouldn't be long until he approached one of the girls, took her clothes and tried them on for himself, and when he finally did so, it felt so right. He started wearing dresses every day, he grew out his hair long like a girl's, and when puberty came, it was almost as if he was born a woman. He didn't know why he was like this, and the Sisters at the orphanage punished him at first, but he quickly began to fit in as a girl.
Intent on stopping his cross dressing habits in their tracks, the Sisters sent him to the girl's lessons, where he would be forced to learn womanly things like sewing and cleaning. This only served to encourage him, because of course he was a genius by their standards, no matter what they put in front of him he would master it in days, and they soon had to give up on trying to stop him. Soon enough, he grew tired of the orphanage, and in the cover of darkness, left for the big wide world.
He was 16 at the time, already fully developed as the woman who would be called Ellie. He had forgotten his original name, but he didn't really care. He grew to hate staying in one place, travelling restlessly through America, living the life of a homeless child. At some point, he began to feel something else inside of him, something that wasn't from his inhuman body. He tried to tap into this new power, but it was far more difficult than anything he had done before, and he didn't seem to be making any progress. One fateful day, a man came up to him and told him he was something special, and offered him a spot at some academy. Ellie couldn't deny his natural awesomeness, so he followed the man's advice and joined. Those around him noticed a tiny amount of something different about him, and noticed his inhuman features, but they could never associate it with Vampirism, and his human blood hid his Vampiric nature from their eyes. He never told any of them that he was a man, he never felt the need, so he was officially signed up as a girl.
Personality: Ellie is a controlling, power-hungry individual who hates to go through effort to reach his goals, instead relying on her bounty of natural talent and feminine charm to achieve his success. That isn't to say that he isn't able to work hard when it comes down to it, just that he doesn't really like it. His nature aside, he's a rather pleasant person to be around, and his natural charm attracts all sorts of people into his tight circle of friends. He has extraordinary talent for persuasion and leadership, something he uses to his advantage to remove any possibilities of resistance from his few enemies. Surprisingly, he's rather slow to anger, and isn't the type to hold grudges for long periods of time. Absolutely adores flashy and fancy things, especially dresses. Speaks loudly, as if he were in front of a wide audience, even when there are only a few people around. Has rather inhuman morals and values.
Aspiring Special Traits/Talents: No particular aspirations, besides his thirst for power.
Age: 246 (roughly 15 in human years)
Species: Dragon (Ryu)
Appearance: Max is a little small for his age, however on him, it looks less scrawny and more adorable. He has short silver hair and eyes that look like pure gold and extreamly fair white skin. He wears a warm hoody, never taking it off in public
History: When Max was just 8 years old in human years his parents were captured by mobsters who wanted to harvest their blood to sell on the black market, leaving poor Max just an orphan. Max was forced to grow up on the streets, using his healing magic to make a living. Because he aged so much slower then everyone else, he had to move to a new town every few years. This left him very lonely. Because his parents were captured for their blood, Max has always been very careful not to let anyone know what he is, out of fear that the same thing will happen to him
Personality: Max is a very timid and bashful boy. While he might seem introverted, he just doesn't know how to approach people. In truth, he's really very extroverted, but to scared to make friends. He grew up starved for affection. As such, he relishes and contact with another person he can get
Special traits/Talents: The Ryu are a very peaceful race. While not possessing the raw physical strength of their Dragon brothers, they are naturals at healing magic. This is because the have an extremely powerful healing reagent in their body; their blood. Ryu blood, sometimes referred to as the 'elixir of life', is so full of life energy, that it give Ryu's a natural healing factor. In fact, their healing magic is pretty much them sharing this healing factor with someone else. Repeated doses of Ryu blood can drastically extend someone longevity and slow down their aging to match that of a Ryu's.
Species: Dark Elf
Appearance: Qualme has a lanky frame standing at about 6'7, though he normally stands with a hunch bringing down his height. His skin is a pale grey from years of living underground. His messy hair is a ebony black, save for a few snowy white strands, that usually is in knots from lack of care. His eyes are a deep crimson and always seem to be looking through rather than at people. Though most may not notice, all of his teeth have been filed down to sharp points leaving him with a menacing grin. He wears all black from his leather jacket with a long collar that coves his mouth, a pair of gloves, a long scarf, cloth pants, and a pair of leather boots.
History: Qualme was a peasant even by the Drow's standards, being born to a drunk of a father and losing his mother moments after his birth Qualme came to know the world as a cold and crule place. His father blamed him for the death of his mother and resnted him ever since treating him more as a servent than a son and quickly putting him to work in his morgue. He was thirteen and it was the seventh day of not being feed when Qualme took his first bite, the taste of the flesh was sweet to his young toung. Qualme worked for years in the morgue becoming use to death, to even enjoy it. The only thing he took his mind off everything was the little bit of magic he managed to learn. When his father found out what he was doing to the bodies he disowned him leaving Qualme with nothing in this world. Through all of his misfortunes Qualme was able to find his true nature as a planewalker and made his way to the Academy.
Personality: Qualme is on the surfice a shy and quite person letting others talk insted of him, spending most of his time reading or studying. Under his pale extrior lays the sharp mind of a twisted person who takes great enjoyment in the plight of others, it revels in death and bloodshed. He manages to hide his true sick nature quite well behind a shroud of timidness.
Special traits/Talents: Qualme's years around death has given him a start down the road of mastering flesh magic. The power to control, mend, and reshape the flesh, blood and bones of the dead and even the living if one is strong enough. This magic is normally frowned upon for it's sadistic properties.
Still waiting on:
Q: Do characters have elemental or magic affinities?
A: NO. A mage can use magic to create any number of different effects, any affinity is just a matter of a style the individual mage prefers.
Q: What kinds of things should my character already know?
A: Ideally? Nothing. This is a school for novices, not a place for people who already know what they are doing.
Q: How does magic work? Are there specific spells? Magic words?
A: Magic is more of a primal force which a mage can use to affect their environment dynamically. Spells and magic words are not fundamental parts of the universe, but rather the result of a mage automating certain aspects of his magic. There is not stock list of magical effects, only what a mage is capable of imagining and putting into action.
Q: What about "holy" magic? "Demon" magic? Ice magic? Fire magic? summoning?
A: As I said, there is no such thing as any of these. Magic is just magic, you can do whatever you want with it.
I'll be adding more as questions come up.
