It’s the 24th century: imagine a world with no conflict, no problems, no wars, or violence. This is a new world, a world in which everyone is beautiful; and being ‘normal’ is considered ugly. In this new age, when you turn sixteen, you’re operated on to become supermodel beautiful. There is no ‘fat’ or ‘skinny’. Everyone is equal.
But everything is not as it seems, and the government is hiding something much more sinister. What happens when young Uglies begin running away? When the modern-day scavengers, known as the Smokies are hard at work to bring down the central government? Well...it’s time to choose a side.
"Centuries ago there were billions of people on Earth known as the Rusties. There were so many, that soon enough more than half of the Earth’s land surface was taken over by human beings and the network of farms, mines, oil-fields, and factories that supported them. Eventually their insatiable hunger for more and more of Earth’s resources destroyed them and the human race, and 98% of humanity ended up dying off. Even then, the last remaining 2% of humanity fought and battled with each other for shrinking resources. Only the lucky ones survived the aftermath. This was known as the Rusty Crash.
When civilization rose again, scientists began to study the few remaining Rusty tribes, trying to figure out a way to preserve the human race. They saw how these Rusties engaged in never-ending bloodbaths. They then knew they had to find a way to eliminate war and discontent forever. It took hours and hours of research until one day a researcher rediscovered an old theory called the “halo effect”. Rusty science showed that beautiful people were treated better than their peers, got into less trouble, and were more happy and successful. That was when the surgery (also known as the ‘surge’) was developed to turn young people into pretties at the age of 16. Of course what scientists rediscovered was that Pretties still did fight with one another. It was human nature to want to compete.
They then realized they had to do something more drastic. Fortunately for those in charge, everyone was dying to have the ‘pretty surgery’. After all, who wouldn’t want to be beautiful? If another answer could be found in the operating tank, maybe humanity could still be saved from itself. That answer was, of course, bubblehead surgery. With small alterations to several areas of the brain, a new kind of pretty could be created: compliant, unaggressive, and happy. Of course the committee, then and still known as The Pretty Committee, kept this fact a secret, because, who wants to volunteer for brain damage?
Now? It’s the 24th century: a world with no conflict, no problems, no wars, no violence. There is no disease or crime, just beauty. This is a world in which everyone is beautiful, and being ‘normal’ is considered ugly. Through years and years of research, the surgery, now known amongst the younger generations as “The Surge”, has finally been perfected. At the age of 16, all young Uglies are mandated to receive the surgery, whether they like it or not. They are then put into the operating tank and come out 48 hours later as a completely new, beautiful citizen.
But everything is not as it seems and only the Smokies and the Pretty Committee know the truth…the real truth- about the brain legions and the corruption of wanting to keep everyone bubbleheads. But what happens when young Uglies begin running away? Rebelling, trying to find a way out? When the modern-day scavengers, known as the Smokies are hard at work to bring down the central government? Well…it’s time to choose a side. Beauty or freedom? Perfection or madness? Fantasy or reality? Because with every lie comes a truth, and some we cannot bear to face."
Littles are anyone under the age of twelve. Littlies still live with their parents (known as middle-pretties) and are cute and small enough not to be called uglies. This is the only stage of life when traditional family ties are considered appropriate.
note: In many cities the suburbs are separated from Uglyville by a swath of forest called “the Greenbelt”. This enforces the differences between ages- leaving your parents’ home requires crossing a symbolic “wild zone” of trees and parks. Littlies are discouraged from playing in the greenbelt which is reserved as a place for Uglies to act out their wild impulses.
They are between the ages of twelve and sixteen. Not cute enough to be littlies, not old enough to get the operation. They live in dorms in Uglyville.
note: Uglyville is separated from New Pretty Town by a wide river, which Uglies are forbidden to cross without permission. This prevents them from keeping in touch with their older friends who already had the operation, further helping to hide the bubblehead effect.
Pretties are Uglies who have had the operation. The operation includes a full skin graft, cosmetic surgery, body morphology change, and the replacement of teeth and other bones with stronger materials. Most important, and secret, is a form of brain surgery. This is known to Specials and Smokies as the “bubble-head surge” which makes Pretties less aggressive and overall less likely to question the social order.
note: New pretties add la or wa the end of a friend’s name. If the name has an l in it, they use ‘wa’. If not, they use ‘la’. For example, Tally-wa, Shay-la.
After several years, the initial effects of the brain surge would wear off, leaving Middle-Pretties bored and unexcited with New Pretty Town’s distractions. After they take a test which determines where they go and what they do with the rest of their lives. They are then relocated and allowed to marry and have children.
note: The more difficult Middle-Pretties who were rebellious as New Pretties and Uglies are often recruited into Special Circumstances which then removes the brain legions and they serve as wardens, firefighters, Rangers, and emergency-room surgeons.
As middle pretties get older, they have minor operations to change their appearance, replacing beauty and youth with markers of wisdom and authority. At age eighty or so, most people retire and move to Crumblyville. Because life-extension surgery keeps late pretties alive into their middle-hundreds, most will live much later than eighty.
note: late pretties are referred to as Crumblies. The term ‘Crumblies’ is also used to describe anyone older than the speaker. For example, Uglies often refer to their parents as ‘my Crumblies’.
"We don’t want to hurt you…but we will if we have to."
Special Circumstances are also referred to as Specials. The Pretty Committee decided that noteveryone could be a bubblehead…there had to be some people who weren’t. They had to sacrifice their own innocence and happiness to stay watchful and successfully govern and guard against danger in a world of bubbly happiness.
These Specials border on inhuman. They are much faster, much colder, much stronger than average humans with a cold beauty that will stop you dead in your tracks. They handle everything that Pretties can’t face. Some are police and firefighters, after all, they have to be faster, better, stronger than normal humans. Others are scientists who have to make cold and rational decisions to save the human race from itself. Some are the last line of defense against troublemakers and runaways. Though they play an important role in society, they are urban legends to Uglies and Pretties.
They are Dr. Cable’s special Specials. They originally began cutting as Pretties; the only way they found was an escape from the happy bubblehead bliss. They tried to escape, but were caught and brought back. Then transformed into a new division of Special Circumstances, they live in the wild and dedicate their lives to hunting down the Smoke. Originally, they were unaware that what they were really doing by triggering adrenaline was counteracting the bubblehead legions, not just a cloud of bubbleheadedness brought on the champagne and lavish lifestyle…and they still don’t know the truth of what was done to them by the Surge as Pretties.
The Smokies are a group of people who were either born in the Smoke or runaways from Uglyville. They thrive in the wild and live off the land. The Smokies are the only people other than Special Circumstances who know about the bubblehead-surge. Soon enough, the Specials began to catch on to all the missing Uglies and began to watch more closely. They’ve been trying to find a cure, but the main priorities have always been increasing numbers and increasing resources. They have a few on the inside, especially park rangers, who are sympathetic to the cause and will often send over materials in the form of a small hot air balloon, and even if these materials aren’t necessary, they’re always viewed as little luxuries.
*Note: Only necessary if playing a Pretty who is either in a clique or wants to join a clique. Otherwise these aren’t relevant.
Hot Airs - The members of this clique are those that hate to be on the ground even and are obsessed with ballooning and all sorts of flight. They are always up in the air, flying around into the dead of night, laughing and singing. They usually live high up in apartments and prefer to be at higher altitudes, such as balconies and rooftops. They also tend to call anyone who isn’t a Hot Air a “groundling”.
The Crims - The crims are a group of New Pretties who love to wreak havoc and cause trouble. Tricks are their specialties, and they are one of the biggest if not most infamous clique in New Pretty Town. Anyone whose anyone is apart of it (usually in secret). These clique members do not like to be revealed because they value privacy and secrecy when pulling off a trick. The clique is watched by Special Circumstances and those who show an outstanding amount of free thinking are eventually recruited.
The Swarm - This clique is a tightly knit one that uses a skintenna surge to create social bonds. Their skintennas are all on one channel, so whenever one member says something, they all hear it. They only go places in huge groups and generally don’t talk to anyone outside the Swarm. Due to the fact that they can always hear what everyone else says there tends to be a lot of inner clique fighting.
Naturals - These are Pretties who are really into gardening and camping. Though not as brave or adventurous as Rangers, they are more likely to go off into the woods as opposed to attending a normal party.
Twisters - The Twisters are viewed as the most anomalous clique in New Pretty Town, and are often doing outrageous things like making themselves look ugly for parties. This clique often looks down on those who choose to get even more beauty enhancing surgeries, and prefer go to au naturale instead. They are the most unconventional clique in New Pretty Town as well, and also experiment with the way they dress, do their hair, and activities they partake in. While they don’t reject the big Surge itself, they just prefer to stand out and be different from the rest of the crowd. Their main intention has always been to twist the perspective of society. They also find the Crims extremely overrated and wouldn’t be caught dead with one of them.
Bogus - means bad, not good. It is the opposite of bubbly.
Bubbleheads - A dismissive terms used by Specials or Smokies to describe Pretties.
Bubbly - means a lot of things to Pretties: from the champagne they drink, the way they feel at parties, to describe how they feel when they like someone. It also means good, fantastic, awesome, great.
Fashion-missing - uncool.
Icy - What Cutters/Specials say instead of bubbly.
Pings - Notifications received from City Interface messages, warnings, etc.
Surge - Short for ‘surgery’.
Tricks - The city is very tightly controlled so whenever Uglies can trick the authorities a small victory is won. Tricking is much like hacking in our generation, not fooling just one person but undermining a whole system.
Bungee Jacket - A jacket one wears to prevent oneself from dying after jumping off something very high. The magnets in the jacket correspond with the magnets in the grid and act as sort of a bungee cord.
City Interface - Much like the internet, the City Interface is what people use in society and around the world to interact with each other. The only difference is that it’s 100% watched by Special Circumstances and privacy virtually doesn’t exist.
Eyescreens - Surgical implants that allow the user to see the city interface at all times.
Eye Surge - Surgery that implant little jewels into the whites of your eyes that allow you to tell time.
Flash Tattoos - Tattoos that move or are triggered by a heartbeat or other biological functions. Especially popular with Crims and Cutters.
Glitterbombs - Flashbangs, they only stun the target.
Hoverboards - Hovering board that allows the user to fly on a board within the city limits due to the magnetic grid built underground. When off the city grid, they only work near the magnets in rivers.
Hovercars - Floating cars that middle-pretties use instead of boards.
Self Heating Food - Used by Specials when in the wild, the food self heats when set off using a chemical reaction.
Special Hoverboards - Specials use these super-engineered hoverboards because they go much faster than regular ones and also use lifting fans instead of magnets. This way Specials can travel anywhere they like
Sneak Suits - Adaptive camouflage suits used by Special Circumstances.
Surge Tank - After being operated on, Pretties and Specials are then put into surge tanks. These tanks are full of nanobot-saturated saline to preserve and mend body tissues after such a stressful operation.

Faust, having been a Special Circumstances agent since the age of nineteen, lives for serving Special Circumstances. He never felt like he belonged in New Pretty Town, and unlike the rest of his peers, he grew up completely aware of the presence of Special Circumstances, and having two parents who worked there certainly helped. Being the second oldest of the Thierlund children, he was recruited to be a Special much earlier than one usually would be due to his connections. As a Pretty, he was a loose cannon. He was much more rebellious and caused enough trouble that it was a significant gamble to recruit him so early. Dr. Cable and all of his superiors thought he’d lose it, be unable to handle the pressures of serving such an important cause, but the one person who believed in him was his father, Brett, and though Faust liked to do whatever he wanted, he knew that his behavior would directly reflect onto his father, who was also the only remaining parent he had left. Once a member of Special Circumstances, he dedicated his life to serving Dr. Cable. He believes every word that he’s told by The Pretty Committee that the bubblehead legions are for citizens own good, and that rebels need to be stamped out. He is Dr. Cable’s go to man when she wants a mission accomplished, no questions asked.
Faust isn’t content with being mediocre at his job though, and is constantly working to stay ahead of the rest of the agents on his squad team. This includes expanding his horizons in numerous areas of expertise. Combat training is a routine part of his schedule and if you get in his way, he won’t hesitate to show you exactly what he knows how to do. His expertise however, is weaponry. He loves knives, guns, grenades, the whole works because it doesn’t come easily to him. Faust is someone who needs a good challenge to keep him going, and weapons are exactly that. Since they’re an extension of his body instead of an actual limb, he always feels like he can do better and hone in on his skills even if he is already very lethal. They’re his favorite form of playtime and when he has spare time, he’s always thinking of new weapons to pitch to Dr. Cable. So far, she hasn’t approved any of his ideas, but he’s confident that given time, and knowledge, he can convince one of them.
Personality: Like all the rest of the Specials, Faust is quick, precise, strong. His body is his most valuable asset, and he owns it. He knows he’s attractive, and often forgets the fact that others around him are too. This causes him to act like an arrogant and conceited individual most of the time, when in reality, he just doesn’t know how to express himself or convey what he’s really feeling. He’s never really had to deal with people on an intimate and emotional level before, and still lacks emotional maturity at 23. In this way he’s really quite socially awkward, but most don’t realize it unless they get to know him well enough. The only people he’s actually kind to is his family members and Dr. Cable. Other than that, he’s got a huge ego, and while he lives for the thrill of the fight, he never doubts his ability to come out on top. He’s fully confident in his abilities and his charm. Known as a notorious lady killer, his only weakness is for new technology and beautiful women.
