This roleplay will take place in Rome, most specifically northern Italy concerning the Roman conflict with the Gauls. Nothing is set in stone, but that's where I want to go with this (I still need to do some research).
It'll follow a general and his legion. The host, assuming somebody wants to host this in place of me, will be the general. He will have several 'captains' under him (unclear on Roman military hierarchy). We'll fight battles, develop strategies, we'll win, we'll lose, etc... typical Roman stuff.
But I want it to be more than just some random hack-n-slash RP. I want there to be some sort of 'drama' in it, something that motivates each and every player to actually do stuff, while at the same trying to fend off Gauls and conquer more land for the 'glory of Rome'.
In that respect, each of you need a character who is compelled to do something. There will be betrayal, death, corruption, etc all involved.
I'm considering having everybody control up to two characters: a Roman captain and a member of the Senate, and you'll be RPing as both.

-I'm going to try and make a story centered around the General and a certain Senator, who basically blackmails him into doing something (because this particular General would be capable of doing what the Senator needs him to do). Then I'll try to mold the players personal stories around that story to incorporate them into it as well.
-As Captains, you'll be controlling groups of a few hundred soldiers (hastati, equites, archers, etc) who you'll be using in conjunction with each other.
-I'm not going to let anybody fight for the Gauls. You may be a Gaul, but everybody here will fight specifically for the Gauls.
-Sorry, no female soldiers in Rome. And no female Senators.
-Hiring assassins... well, that's up to you.
