Haven: A haven is another name for an inhabitable place. This habitation is under the general requirements for Humans. It is rare, but some haves are actually in the same cosmos and can be traveled to and from through interstellar flight. Most, however, cannot be reached through such means, and one must travel through "the rift" ... a void of nothingness (including time and space) in order to reach another cosmos (called "cosmos" as in a bubble of space/time. I use this word because the terms "dimensions" or "universes" are not properly used in accordance to their definitions.)
Manna: Manna is the magical forces that exceed matter and energy, thought being one of them but there are a great many natural and un-natural kinds. This is the power and pieces that builds most technologies in this setting. We call our technology "electronics" because it is run off of electricity. These technologies are called "magic" and they run off of manna.
Mage: Mage are manna engineers. They know how to construct and repair magical devices and how to cause manna reactions (called spells) in order to power these devices. Keep in mind, though, these magical devices are not necessarily material, they can be energy or a careful construction of forces that do not register on any modern terrestrial instruments.
Why no Guns?
Technology is hard to come by because of its limits. In addition, the use of blessings protects particularly well against projectile weapons and shrapnel. Usually these are overcome by a marksman pouring his will into one shot at a time, or a melee combatant controlling his weapon while en-route to its target.
Melesians: (The Throngs)
Melesians are the name for the human race. It precedes and extends beyond Earth (Terra.) Terrans (Humans from Earth) are considered very odd in the proceedings of things and generally considered backwards even though they have a massive population and manufacturing. It is considered different and not better. Terra is located in a Manna void, meaning that it is particularly deprived of powers that make magical technologies run. At one time it was a vital location to wage war. However, the Melesians drove the Fairy out with a doomsday weapon. Upon conquest the alliance broke down and their unity crumbled into warring factions. This has made other species give a wide birth to Terra. Outside of earth there are a number of worlds that are Melesian, Melesians are kind of like the rodents of the intelligent species, they can be found almost everywhere. Other than a number of haven-states, there are a few notable governments that spread beyond only one haven.
The Noble's Confederacy:
These lands only span a few havens, and are ruled in a very similar fashion as the chivalry era of Europe. However, because of the distance between havens and with there being predators lurking about, the origins of this government found rulership by a king to costly an endeavor. Instead they established an election process by a limited few... those who owned a whole heap of stuff already. This became the Noble's Confederacy which basically was a collection of ruling rich people who owned everything seeking mutual protection.
The Arcanite Dictation:
Ruled by powerful wizards, the Arcanite Dictation became a union of quite a number of havens. Located on the edge of Faerie lands, they have sought to freeload off of the well earned magic of the Faerie. This has involved numerous conflicts to experiment and expose the magical development. This information is then used to gain authority and power. Among the races of men, the Arcaneite Dictation is ruled by the master wizard who seized control of a number of the Noble's Confederacy though a military and arcane coup. Now, the better the wizard, the higher on the totem pole you are.
The Faerie: (The Seducters)
The Faerie are those creatures strait out of Earth mythology commonly known as Faeries. However, the Pixy (small humans with insect wings) are only part of the Faerie empire. They are mostly peaceable people with unusual ways that confuses primitive people such as Humans. They are peaceful, and hold a very powerful magic, the strongest of all the nations. They are renown explorers, usually silently observing rather than making a whole hullabaloo when they visit. They focus on freedom and justice, and will give up land if it is for the benefit of the indigenous life.
There are also those among the Faerie who are the lawless or cruel, mean jokes, or killers. These are remnants of the great struggles between the Faerie and the Fomori. Goblins are a race who was nearly wiped out by the Fomori, but were saved by the Faerie. The Trolls are genetically engineered soldiers that are nearly obsolete relics of the great and bloody conflicts of the past. There are numerous aspects of the Faerie underworld that no Human should venture into.
They are ruled by Danu, the queen of the Faerie. Those in service to her are called the Tuatha De, which are basically elite forces and the military of the Faerie. A number of the "species" are actually part of the same with different variations in their performance much like ants have workers, warriors, and queens. Danu has been alive for 6000 years, and is the mother of much of the Faerie. However, Faeries also have the ability to reproduce on their own. Danu holds a council of the other allied races and she usually follows the voice of the majority, but does hold a strong grip on what is right and peaceable. Her rulership mostly focuses on protecting her people from enemies and provision for their needs of land, beyond that she usually takes a hands-off approach. This distance has enabled the Faerie and the Tuatha De Dannin to be perceived as two entirely different peoples. It is not uncommon for a Faerie to completely ignore the requests of the Tuatha De and not be punished or forced in the least. The Tuatha De have a history of conquering or displacing competitors for their own benefit (As was their conquering of the Fir Bolg and the near annihilation of an entire people for the sake of establishing new territory for their people)
On the other hand the Faerie (not the Tuatha De) rarely inflict any sort of hardship extend past justice or vengeance brought upon individual criminals. This distinction between government and people has actually been quite beneficial to the Faerie. Frequently the people are called the "Good Neighbors" and are welcomed on havens normally hostile to the Tuatha De.
The Fomori: (The Conquerors)
Fomori are creatures that are similar to the ocean and its inhabitants. They are a union of numerous worlds ruled by the Maclir dynasty. While they are intelligent, and reasonable, they are also an empire at the peak of their expansionistic era. They take worlds to their liking through military might if need be, and are not above enslaving the populace. They control several dozen worlds, and their arch nemesis is the Faerie who they have been warring with for tens of thousands of years. Try though they might, Fomori magic is considerably weaker than that of the Faerie, and thus little gain is made.
They are comprised of a number of races. One of them is all one side of a body. Balor (one of their conquering generals) was renowned for wearing a goat-head helmet.
The Nemed: (The Assimilators)
The Nemed are noble conquerors. When a new noble is born or an expanded rank created where there is no room they pool all forces and conquer another Haven rather than redistribute their lands. Though viewed as no-good killers, they are one of the most stable governments. The Nemed control every aspect of their citizens lives, down to who someone is to marry. They absorb new cultures into themselves, often stranding the hostile factions and military on an asteroid they cannot escape from. Once absorbed, they disburse the populace throughout their empire, never to see another of their culture again. Once there, they embed them in families to learn from each other and also spy on each other. Every citizen has a level of information they are permitted in accordance of how proven they are to the government. Because they are mortal and also do not stagnate like the other nations, they rapidly advance and improve almost constantly, keeping their enemies on their toes.Technologically, the Nemed are some of the most adept at dealing with the physical world, and therefore has kept the Fomori as well as the Faerie at bay.
--In addition to these races listed here, there are dozens of other species. As a player you are free to develop whatever you like.--
