[The name of the Roleplay is subject to change]
So anyway... I've recently got into this Anime called "Accel World". And I've wanted to roleplay it for quite some time. However, no active roleplays existed, so I decided to take matters into my own hands . For those of you who don't know what this is, I'll give you a run down. However, I HIGHLY recommend watching the Anime, or reading the original Light Novels to get a better understanding of it. I'm serious... The Anime does a better job of explaining than me. (For those of you unfamiliar with this but know of “Sword Art Online”, the author of both stories is the same person: Reki Kawahara.)
However, knowledge of Accel world is not needed to participate. It helps, but it’s not necessary as I’ll do my best to explain it here .
On another note, I’ve only watched the anime series (which covered volumes 1-4) and the first few parts of the 6th volume, since that was about as far as the English translations went at the moment.
And a word of warning: This WILL be a lengthy post
It is the year 2044. The world is now mostly a technological utopia. A new piece of technology known as the "Neuro-Linker" (a device worn at the back of the neck like a half-collar, which taps into the users 5 senses) is now widely used, and utilized to access virtual networks that have effectively replaced the computers and mobile phones, with personal holographic screens that appear in front of you (and can only be seen by you) and are used in a similar manner to touchscreen technology. It is also now used to access the internet or “Global Net” as they call it. Unknown to most of its users though, a program has been secretly released to the public. This program is known as: "Brain Burst"
Brain Burst is, at its core, a virtual-reality fighting game (much like Tekken, except from a first person view, is dynamic, and has much more mechanics than the usual fighting game), but it possesses a powerful ability. The program takes control of the person's heartbeat and brain functions, increasing their activity, and “accelerates" the person's perception of time. Using Acceleration, they can seemingly freeze time around them. A person in the "Accelerated World" can feel 16 minutes pass within the program, for every 1 second in real time.
Acceleration is a powerful ability, since people can take advantage of it in the real world (Such as using it to score high in tests or win in sport competitions thanks to the slowed perception of time. In fact, they can even increase their physical speed for a short time). However, using the Acceleration ability costs "Burst Points". And these points can only be gained by fighting and winning against other players known as: "Burst Linkers". Defeat on the other hand, will cause you to lose more points.
Burst Linkers fight using
Duel Avatars are the virtual avatar that you use when inside the Accelerated World’s battlefield. However, you do not create and customize it manually. The game does it for you.
When you first install Brain Burst, you will have a nightmare the next time you go to sleep. The reason behind this is because the program is analyzing your fears, traumas, and hopes. After the program has analyzed your emotions, it will then construct a Duel Avatar that is a manifestation of all these elements.
The look, name, and battle abilities of your Duel Avatar all come from your emotional scars and how you’ve chosen to deal with them (or how you “hope to deal with them”). In a sense, the Avatar is a reflection of your fears, weaknesses, and dreams.
This is why it is a fighting game; to be victorious and earn more points will allow the user to continue using their acceleration ability, while losing all of their points will cause the program to automatically uninstall, make sure it can never be installed on the user again, and erase the player's memory of ever having Brain Burst at all. Once a Burst Linker has had a taste of the game’s power, they must keep satisfying their hunger, and so they endlessly fight.
The End Game goal of Brain Burst is to reach "Level 10". However, no player has ever done this, and none have dared because of the harsh requirements to level up to 10: In order to reach level 10, you must defeat five Level 9 players, while being a Level 9 yourself (Which is already a difficult feat). However, in a duel between Level 9's, the losing player automatically loses all of their Burst Points, causing the program to instantly uninstall.
Only 7 players have ever attained Level 9 and they are known as the Seven Kings of Pure Color (Red Rider, Blue Knight , Green Grandee, Yellow Radio, Purple Thorn, White Cosmos, and Black Lotus) and each of them have become the leader of a Legion (which is a "gaming clan" of sorts.) that have dominion over different parts of Tokyo. Players refer to them as “Blue King”, “Green King”, etc. instead of their actual names as a sign of respect.
Six of the Kings agreed to a Peace Treaty, but the seventh (the Black King) chose to fight and risk it all. Because of a rumor that whoever reached Level 10, would meet the game's creator, and discover the true meaning and purpose of Brain Burst. None of them shared the Black King’s sentiments however...
So, the Black King betrayed the other six by assassinating the Red King while he preached for peace at the 1st meeting of the Kings. The Purple King despaired at sight of her lover’s severed head, the Blue King retaliated in a furious frenzy, and the rest of the Kings joined the brawl. The Black King fought like a madman, but was unable to kill anyone else. When the match timer ended, all the Kings were logged out automatically.
The remaining five Kings placed a bounty on the traitor's head. The Black King went into hiding, and the Black Legion was eventually disbanded.
However, two years later (in the year 2046), the Black King re-emerged, along with a small band of powerful Burst Linkers (which made up the new, albeit small, Black Legion) and declared war on the other Kings; announcing that they would destroy the sham that the Kings called a “Treaty”.
And this is where our roleplay's journey begins...
The Legions and their leaders are as follows:
Red King (Scarlet Rain) - Prominence
Blue King (Blue Knight) - Leonids
Green King (Green Grandee) - Great Wall
Yellow King (Yellow Radio) - Crypt Cosmic Circus
Purple King (Purple Thorn) - Aurora Oval
White King (White Cosmos) - Oscillatory Universe
Black King (Black Lotus) - Nega Nebulas
The Seven Great Legions territory map (And other information):
Grey areas are neutral territory (or territory controlled by smaller legions). These areas will be the main focus of our roleplay
Miscellaneous information (This is info that a Burst Linker ought to know):
*Originally, the leader of Prominence was "Red Rider" (Hence the name: Seven Kings of "Pure Color"). But he was killed by Black Lotus when the Black King chose to fight, thereby removing the program from him and erasing his memory. A free-for-all competition took place between Red Legion candidates to decide the new leader (since the group was beginning to fall apart). Scarlet Rain was the last one standing, eliminating over 30 other candidates during the fight. She has since become the 8th person to become a Level 9, and (due to her victories attained without moving an inch) has the nickname “Immobile Fortress”
*Aurora Oval has a special hatred for Nega Nebulas because their leader (Purple Thorn) was the girlfriend of the late Red Rider.
*Crypt Cosmic Circus has generally adhered to the Treaty signed 2 years ago, but their leader (Yellow Radio) is a master manipulator, and is prepared to do anything to reach his goals... Prominence is on high alert with them because of a recent attempt on the life of their current leader (Scarlet Rain).
*While Blue Knight is only the leader of the Leonids (The Blue Legion), the other Kings look up to him as a source of wisdom and fair justice; often acting as a mediator for large disputes. Because of his reputation (and very intimidating Duel Avatar), players are often surprised to find that he sounds like a young boy.
*The new Nega Nebulas has only 5 members at the moment (including Black Lotus), but other players are fully aware of how powerful this small group is, with a winning ratio that fluctuates in between 75-100% in weekly battles.
*There is a mysterious group known as the “Acceleration Research Society”; little is known about them, other than the fact that their members cheat, hack, and crack the game’s code for different reasons. They use Brain Burst as a tool for their own ends, rather than a game, and couldn’t care less about the welfare of other players. Their ultimate goal is unknown.
- This roleplay will be set after the events of season 1 of the anime, and volume 4 of the novel. The Black King now has a small group of Burst Linkers making up the new Nega Nebulas who have re-captured their lost territory, and are repelling attacks from other Legions encroaching on their lands, or are after the Black King’s bounty.
- We will be playing as new Burst Linkers (or perhaps, experienced ones) who will take part in the events breaking out in the Accelerated World. More specifically, within the neutral zones (or the zones uncontrolled by any of the Great Legions). This is in order to stay out of the way of the official story, and have a story of our own, while still interacting with canon events. However, you are free to play as a member of one the Great Legions if you wish.
- You will be a member of a neutral Legion, helping the Kings as one of their subordinates, or a lone wolf (which will be difficult because of all the advantages of being in a Legion)
- We will probably interact with characters from the show and novel itself on rare occasions, as long as we can keep them "in character". And as long as we do not drastically change the events depicted in the anime and novels.
- If enough people declare interest, only then I will start working on the OOC. I've got a bit of a busy schedule, and would rather not waste time making something that will just be ignored . As I've said, I will explain the finer details of the Accel World Universe in the OOC, in case potential rolelayers are unaware of the Anime or original novel. But if anyone asks here, I will gladly answer.
