In another world much different from our own, was one where the supernatural existed alongside humans. For a long time, there was nothing but wars and fear. However in recent years new agreements had been reached. Three of the main forces in the world, Humans, Weres, and Vampires had come to an agreement to end the wars. In order to live together concessions were to be made. The Humans agreed to not kill any supernatural creature without just cause, which meant said creature had to be in violation of a law and handed over to their respective people for punishment unless otherwise indicated. Human witches were also required to submit themselves to their ruling body, the council of witches. Illegal magics were banned.
Weres, the many different kinds, were recruited to keep the peace. They became the police for the towns and cities. They weren't allowed to run wild in their non-human forms without cause. Which meant only the police could do it, and only when someone under their protection might be harmed. The Weres took their responsibility very seriously. They laid claim to entire towns and the packs moved in and kept their people safe. Due to their nature, most Weres never left the town or city their pack claimed so not to trespass on a different pack's territory.
Vampires, creatures of the night, were confined to the dark hours. They were allowed to take humans, Weres or other creatures they found upon the streets to feed upon under certain conditions. First was that they could only do this after curfew. Curfew was an hour after sun down and an hour before sun up. That was the only time a Vampire could legally take someone. Second was that they could only take from the streets. They couldn't take from any buildings, homes, cars, etc. Since there were always idiots on the street, there was never a lack of food for the Vampires, so there were no problems.
One law that applied to everyone was no killing for sport. Vampires were allowed to kill to feed. Weres were allowed to kill in defense of others. Humans and witches were allowed to kill in self defense. No one was allowed to kill for fun. If someone was found doing this, no matter to what species, the Weres would step in a put a stop to it.
So the towns and cities could live in peace with each race. Of course this didn't mean that everyone got along all the time. Or even that everyone mingled. Most of the time everyone kept to themselves. Weres to Weres. Humans to humans. Vampires to Vampires. The Weres ranked themselves by authority. Dominance was everything. Humans did it by wealth. Vampires by Houses, or blood, depending on how you looked at it. The other races not part of the triangle kept mostly to themselves with their heads down, not getting into much trouble.
But trouble always came. Today it was a young human girl. She was killed sometime during the night. Her body left out in the middle of main street, naked, covered in bite marks, for the world to see. She was the third victim to be killed this way. Everyone was tense and stressed. The Vampires were breaking their end of their agreement. There was no proof at this point that the killer wasn't acting alone, but the fact that the killings continued was damning. People were getting restless.
Denver lowered a camera as he finished taking pictures of the crowd. His brown eyes narrow and watchful. Denver was a Wolf. Son of the Beta of the town pack. He was also just a rookie for the police force. Which was why he was taking pictures of everything around. The wolf ran a hand through his short brown hair as he took a small break. The Were in charge was Mandy, a werelynx, and she was currently talking to a few of the other members of the Were force around. She didn't look happy. But no one was happy today. This was the third day in a row that this call had come in. Hopefully the corner would get here soon to take the poor girl's body away.
Denver raised the camera again and took a few more pictures. When he was finished he turned in the camera to one of the forensics people wandering around the scene. There was no doubt in his mind that this scene was no different from the first two. Pristine. Not a trace of anything. Not even a scent. Of course, Vamps rarely left scents behind other than a slight musty smell. Denver forced down an angry snarl. His nerves were fraying and he wasn't good at keeping his temper in check. Or his mouth for that matter.
Denver wandered over to where Mandy was and caught the full force of her glare.
"Ma'am?" Denver asked carefully. Careful to not say anymore than Ma'am that is.
"Damn it. That was one of the Vamp houses. They're going to send us company." The Lynx said disgusted.
There were a few growls all around, including Denver.
"You're joking. That's stupid." Denver's mouth shut quickly when he was glared at again. Oops.
"No. It's smart for them. They're trying to find out what we know. Cunning Bastards." Mandy again.
"When is it coming?" This was Charles, an older wolf.
"Soon. I wouldn't be surprised it was already here watching us." Mandy spat on the ground. "That's enough lollygagging, get back to work."
With no choice but to get back to work Denver sighed. Today had gone from bad to worse. He muttered under his breath as he joined up with Carol, his semi-work partner. They had been paired up for these cases, but only to canvas the area and ask people questions. Upon hearing Denver's mutterings, Carol chuckled. She was an easy going person, for a crow.
"Don't keep it in." She chuckled again. "Might be bad for your health."
"You're bad for my health." Denver retorted.
Carol smiled, not offended, and smacked Denver on the shoulder. "Get to work dog."
Denver stuck out his tongue and did just that.
