It's a curse.
.Character you wish to portray:
Dennis 'Denny' Colt Jr. A.K.A The Spirit
.Hero, villain, or walking the line?:
.Powers and physical attributes:
Denny appears a handsome young man in his late twenties. He has a broad shoulders, akin to the build of a boxer which lead into his toned and hardened body. In his civilian identity, he appears simply as a man who dresses slightly out of date but otherwise is quite attractive. Dark blue eyes and chestnut brown hair, Denny is what some might call traditionally good looking. As the Spirit however, Denny goes back to his roots, dressing in a costume inspired by his old private investigator garb. A specially made black business suit, lined with a mixture of kevlar and nomex with an armored tench coat over top of it. The trench coat is lined with ceramic plates on the chest and back along with a titanium weave to ensure its protection and durability. On his face, Denny wears a simple navy blue domino mask and around his neck a deep red necktie. Lastly, his personal 'coup de grace', Denny wears a wide brimmed fedora on his head which like the coat has ceramic plates in order to keep his head safe. The brim is also made from a rigid metal allowing the hat to be used as a last resort weapon.
After his exposure to Dr. Cobra's serum, Denny was given various abilities. The first of which is that Denny has become seemingly ageless, having yet to age a day since he was dosed with the serum. Despite this originally being diagnosed as an effect of the stasis, Denny has yet to age since being woken up three years ago. In addition to this, Denny's body has increased slightly in durability. While a knives and gunfire will still break skin, Denny's blood clots at an accelerated rate to reduce the risk of bleeding out, in addition to this his bones are very strong capable of withstanding large of amounts of stress as well as jumps or falls from heights which would normally severely wound if not kill a man. In the case of extreme injuries to his body, Denny will fall into a healing coma. Though this renders him defenseless, in forty eight hours Denny can heal from most major injuries.
The serum also increased Denny's strength, although Denny won't be lifting cars over his head any time soon. He is however strong enough to push a car over on its side, albeit with a lot of exerted effort. His stamina is also well above average, allowing Denny to run or fight without exhaustion for an extended period of time.
Aside from his new found gifts, Denny has a lot of skills from both his time on the New York Police Force and during his past three years with S.T.A.R. Labs. Denny is an excellent shot, and while he original carried a basic six shot revolver, he has been re-outfitted with twin Browning Hi-Power 9mm pistols. The second pistol is meant to be a back up in case disarmed or low on ammo (though Denny does carry additional munitions on his person.), Denny is capable of wielding guns akimbo when necessary. Though his forensics knowledge and techniques are out of date, Denny is an excellent detective capable of solving a multitude of different cases. S.T.A.R Labs staff have also attempted to update Denny's education though due to his lack of understanding of modern technology Denny has yet to fully grasp these techniques. That aside, Denny learns very quickly, an ability that was only further enhanced by Dr. Cobra's serum though not to superhuman levels. Merely his mind retains the 'tabula rasa' state, allowing him to learn without hindrance of past knowledge providing a hindrance through bias. Denny has picked up a variety of other tricks from his experience, aside from being a good shot, Denny is a capable old fashioned brawler having been trained boxing during his time at the academy. He has attempted to update with some mixed martial arts training but Denny relies specifically on boxing in most situations. Denny is also something of an escape artist, capable of getting out of most bindings and restraints. Like most private investigator's, Denny is skilled in tracking a target and remaining hidden through various forms of stealth.
Denny prefers to stalk Central City from the rooftops, running from building to building. But S.T.A.R Labs has provided him with something a little faster, an experimental vehicle dubbed the autoplane. In its base form, the autoplane appears as a Dodge Challenger, but with the push of a button, the vehicle transforms to a flight capable form allowing Denny to chase suspects across the country if not the world if necessary.
.Origin and backstory (as you see it):
Dennis Colt Jr. was born to loving parents in the late roaring twenties. Growing up through the dirty thirties, Denny learned how to work the hard way and upon turning the age of eighteen, he immediately headed for the Big Apple and enrolled into police academy. Starting at the bottom, Denny worked his way through the ranks, tackling every topic and aspect of the job and training with more spirit than his superiors had seen in nearly a decade. By the mid forties, Denny had reached the rank of Detective and was known for being one of the most honest and headstrong men in the New York Police Department. Though he excelled as both a criminologist and detective, Denny always felt limited by the 'red tape' surrounding the law and decided to resign from the force to become a private investigator. As a private investigator, Denny began to brandish a form of vigilante justice now that he was free of paperwork. Eventually, a case came across his desk leading Denny on to the trail of a Dr. Cobra. This Dr. Cobra seemed to be responsible for a number of kidnappings in the Manhattan area and Denny was determined to put a stop to it.
Tracking down Dr. Cobra to a private yacht, Denny stole away and bided his time hiding below deck as he eavesdropped on the conversations of Dr. Cobra and his cronies in order to learn their plans. From what Denny gathered, it seemed that they were keen on creating a formula which would turn an ordinary man literally into Nietzsche's Ubermensch, a super-man. Armed only with his revolver and his wits, Denny swore to take the mad man down. Ambushing the first henchman that crossed his path, Denny swiftly made his way to Dr. Cobra's mobile lab where he found the madman completing his serum. A large canister of it had just been seal as Denny entered the room. Rushing the Doctor, Denny struggled with the madman only for the doctor to gain the upper hand and escape from the lab. Drawing his pistol, Denny aimed for the retreating man but his aim was suddenly thrown amiss as the ship rocked violently as it went over a large wave. The bullet ricocheted off of the interior of the ship, impacting with the canister behind Denny causing it to explode all over the private detective.
Attempting to wipe himself off, Denny rushed back towards the upper decks only to find out the ship was now sabotaged and Dr. Cobra had escaped on the ship's only dingey. Denny found himself struggling to move as he fought to get to the ship's bridge. The last thing he remembered seeing was that the ship's course was set due North before his vision went dark and his body fell to the floor in a rigor mortis like state.
Nearly seventy years passed until Denny's eyes opened again. The ship had drifted North until it had run out of fuel and was then carried by the moving currents only to eventually collide with an iceberg where it remained lodged until the day a ship sponsored by a man by the name of Ebony White found it. Ebony White was not only a rather wealthy man based in Central City but also a researcher for S.T.A.R. Labs. Originally on an Alaskan Expedition in search of evidence that alien life had touched down in the arctic, White was more than surprised to find the detective perfectly preserved in the ice. Even more exciting was the man's shallow breathing as though his body had gone into a comatose or stasis like state. Immediately airlifting the man back to Central City, White and his team went about revitalizing the mysterious man until one day Dennis was figuratively brought back from the dead. Alarmed and confused, Denny had to almost immediately be sedated though the team was more than relieved to hear the man speak English. Over the next few weeks, White and his team slowly learned about Denny as he too learned about the new society he was now a part of. Through further testing, Denny and White's team discovered Denny's various abilities while Denny was given courses in order to bring him up to speed on modern technology, events and society. Though Denny did learn at an excelled rate, he still remained as a fish out of water. Knowing he could never fully integrate with this society, Denny expressed his wishes to White to aid the city in 'spirit.' As a man he could never be anything more than an artifact from the past, but from the shadows, he could be like the other heroes around the world. So Denny supplied with everything he needed from S.T.A.R. Labs set up his own base of operations, by day he was just a man living in an apartment high above the city, but by night he was a guardian in the shadows, a Spirit of Justice.
.The burning question - Why this character?:
I chose the Spirit for starters because I highly doubted anyone else would, and because I felt as though I could bring a fresh perspective to this character. Aside from the recent movie, it is unlikely most people have heard of the Spirit which meant he was essentially a base idea I could take and mold into a new update version of the character particularly by taking hints from the Marvel Movieverse version of Captain America, who like my version of the Spirit is sort of a 'Fish out of Water.'
.How will this version of your character differ from others? How will it be Ultimate?:
My version of the Spirit is drastically different from any published version I am aware of. For starters I believe I am the first person to bring Denny Colt Jr. to the twenty first century. In addition to this, I turned his relationship with Ebony White on its head as well as recharacterizing Ebony White himself. This is Denny Colt with resources and able to act outside the law like he always wanted to. On top of that, I believe I had adjusted his powers in order to make him a more notable hero in a world of literal 'gods'. Denny Colt can now be a contender without needing Batman's resources or Superman's powers. I also wanted to make sure he had a cool car, despite the autoplane coming from Canon.
.What do you believe you can bring to the RPG?:
I believe I can bring a consistent character with a his own unique subplots as well as the full ability to interact and relate with numerous other PC characters. As I usually only play in games which I am the GM, I believe I know how to respect a GM and to follow their cues for setups in order to ensure a plot advances as opposed to stagnate by contributing to redundant situations. I like to think of myself as a decent writer as well with an enjoyable style and more than capable of writing the sufficient length and beyond to ensure I earn my place in this RP.
.Provide a short sample post as your desired character, in three paragraphs or more:
Sitting behind the steering wheel of the supercar, Denny Colt Jr. or as he was known now, the Spirit let out a low whistle as he watched the showgirl walk through the back doors of the seedy club.
"Lookit that gams on 'er. You seeing this White? I'll wager she's a real share crop."
From the car's radio came the voice of Ebony White, the millionaire scientist who was responsible for bringing Denny back from the brink of death. Though Denny wished he had been able to do it about seventy years earlier. So much had changed in the time he had been comatose. Denny often felt he didn't known the world anymore, there was technology available he could never had dreamed of. But at least one of the things Denny loved in life had stayed tried and true. Women were still beautiful and as lovely as ever.
"Keep your eyes on the job Colt. Remember I'm only here to advise you in case you run into anything you're unfamiliar with. You're the detective here, we need your mind on the job, not on your... how do you put it? Your johnson?"
"You catch on fast cat!" Denny replied as he stepped out of the car and picked up the small headset that White had given him. Fitting it behind his ear, he squinted as the device felt unnatural and uncomfortable. He had no idea how the people of this century could wear these things all the time. "Anything I should know about this particular speakeasy or is it just the same every other sauced up hole in the ground this city has to offer?"
"You'll find after awhile, everything out there gets pretty mundane. At least it did until you and the other super-friends showed up. The world was changed for ever when a man who could should lasers from his eyes fell from the sky."
"Sounds like my kind of cat, you'll have to introduce us someday..." The Spirit paused as he walked up to the door. The two bouncers looked at him with a snarl. Their hands fell to their weapons as they saw the mask on his face no doubt they already realized he was here to cause their employer trouble.
"I thought you were going to be stealthy today."
"Be cool daddy-o! I was, but then I got a little stir-crazy doing the stake out back there. Besides, these gorillas won't be much of challenge." Denny smiled smugly beneath his fedora he lunged forward quickly sucker punching the first bouncer, before ducking under the other's arm causing him to shoot his partner in the foot as the Spirit moved his gun arm. Stomping on the man's foot, Denny followed up with a quick elbow to the gut and an uppercut to the man's jaw before grabbing the collar of his shirt and spinning the man around before tossing him at the first bouncer. The two men collided with the nearby alley's brick wall rendering them both unconscious.
"See, piece of cake Ace. You worry too much!" The Spirit said as he opened the door only to be greet by the butt of a shotgun.
"Well hot damn, looks like I'm going to get some more kicks after all."
.Preferred roster pic? (No preference, and one will be chosen for you):
Character You Wish to Portray: Walter West
Hero, Villain or Walking the Line? Hero
- Kinetic Energy Redistribution: Walter was granted the ability to take the speed of objects in motion in his vicinity and add it to his own, or add said kinetic energy and add it to another object, though only for a limited time. (example: He takes the speed of a handgun bullet travelling at 750 mph, the bullet drops to the ground and now he can operate at a maximum speed of 750 mph for an hour, if he uses half of said speed he operate at twice the amount of time) In the beginning, he'll only be able to absorb from one object, but as time passes he could absorb more.
- Accelerated Healing: By redirecting his Kinetic Redistribution ability to an open wound, internal injury, or cancerous tumor towards himself or others he heals at a much faster rate (about 10x) than the average human.
Walter West was once a young man living in squalor with his parents as an only child, but he always had a positive outlook on life and was nearly contagious. Before he had the ability to communicate full sentenced with proper grammar, his mother had been an anti-depressant taking waitress. His father had been an alcohol loving, strip club visiting semi truck driver. After Wally could express his child logic and go-get-it attitude, his mother had become a much happier person, eventually taking over the restuarant she worked at, and his father spent more time with his family, even getting sobered up so he could take a job as a mechanic for the police force.
Then 9/11/01 happened, and Wally was of a young age had been en route to a collective school track and field event in New York City when the worst moment since the attack on Peark Harbor had occured. The bus full of high school runners, pole vaulters, and discus throwers collectively decided to risk their lives for their fellow Americans. They worked side by side with firefighters, policemen, and other volunteers, Wally even got into an arguement with his parents about going home, but lost out.
Mere weeks went by, and then his father made a very noble, yet scary decision for his family and signed on for the US Armed Forces, telling Wally that on that day that his son was his hero. At such a young age, he and his friends had done something nobody excepted them to do, and he was proud of him for that.
That was one of the last conversations he'd have with his father, and at such a young age and seeing the brief moment of horrors he had seen, he forever believed was one of the original superheroes for making such a choice.
Unfortunately, his father died in early 2002 from an IED detonation, and Walter was now and forever the man of the house, never losing his positive attitude, but he did develope a habit of saluting every Military serving man and woman he came across.
8 YEARS LATER
Walter, now a 16 year old high school sophmore and part time mechanic's intern at a bike shop, had a relatively good life, now living in the suburban area of Central City with his mother, now a locally famous restuarant owner (part of the reason being she saved the Mayor from a heart attack). He had been present at the time, eating a free dinner there like most nights, but then the television caught his eye.
All across the world, a compiling of ameuter footage was being shown of a flying person catching a downed aircraft in Metropolis. Then he brought himself back to reality, and helped out his mother by calling in the paramedics, but he never could get his mind off the flying man, the one that would soon be dubbed "Superman".
Walter was witness to a great atrocity on 9/11, but now, superheroes were popping up. He was glad for this, but at the same time a little bit angry at them, an emotion he had hardly ever felt, his reasoning being that if they had surfaced just a few years earlier, his father would still be alive. Nevertheles, he appreciated what they did, heck even the Flash he liked. Some guy who could run at supposedly the speed of light, a hero, yet he also felt he was putting the cops out of work as well.
Then came the interstellar threat of Sta'rro, a legion of parasites that took invaded Earth. Walter and his mother found shelter in a church during this time, and as Walter prayed for one of the few times he did, the collection of heroes, or Justice League, beat back the invasion and saved Earth.
From that moment on, Walt and his mother had stayed true to that church, becoming followers of the Christian faith, even as supposed aliens and products of other gods now walked among them...
Enter the second year of the superheroism era, and Walter, now 17 has a job at the motorcycle shop, even taking repair jobs occassionally for the police department of Central City. He has a good job, though his familial relations have become slightly strained as his mother spends more and more time devoted to the restuarant.
One day, as he was cashing in a check at the bank when none other than The Trickster, and the Pied Piper made their presence known and took hostages, including Wally they had 30 customers and employees to use as bargaining chips, and as Wally prayed that the Flash would turn up, he never did.
So taking matters into his own hands, he snuck away and formulated a plan to fight back. His plan consisting of a guard's sidearm, the silent alarm, and hope. Outside, the police and SWAT had gathered under the command of Police Chief Fred Chyre, and were ready to strike when they heard gunshots...
Inside the bank, Wally had confronted the two villains and while he talked the Trickster down, The Pied Piper was about to use infamous flute weapon, so Wally fired a few rounds into the ceiling, and the police came a knockin'.
As the scene was secured, Wally declined an interview with the media and met Fred Cheyre, asking him to keep everyone away from him, believing himself not to be a hero, just a guy who had done the right thing, and as he made his way home on foot, that was when his life changed...
As had been stated earlier that day by the weatherman, a lightning storm with complimentary rain had made itself known in the city, and as Wally was crossing an intersection, a bolt of lightning struck the stop light, and by extention, Wally.
As Wally blacked out from the surge of all that pain, a fleeting amount of images flashed through his mind's eye, none of which made any sense to him at the time, but as he blackef out, he felt an alien sense of relief, and then, nothing...
365 days passed since that seemingly unfated and random lightning bolt had struck Walter West down in the middle of the street.
Since then, his familial relations were strengthened with his mother, he had struck up a sort of friendship with the Police Chief, occassionally going on ride alongs with him.
But two things were weakened, the first being his faith in superheroes. The Flash, the fastest man alive apparently couldn't find the time to stop a bank robbery, or just him, spasming in the street, helpless until the paramedics had scooped him up. They were the real heroes.
The second thing to be shaken was his faith in God. If a superhero would ignore him, then why wouldn't a diety?
In those 365 passing days, there were a few occurances that had seemed odd to him, but he had shaken them off as just him being tired. Occurance number one was a motorcycle he had been working on and now had decided to test drive down an empty street. It had been going 60 mph one second registered on the speedometer, but the bike soon started to go a little slower, gradually decreasing in speed.
Another occurance was at a track meet, and while he was in a relay race against a few other guys, he was in last, but those ahead of him started to slow down, while he sped up even though he was going his fastest.
As he walked home one day though, he he'd been ambushed by a group of thugs, they had beaten him, they had humiliated him, but then something happened. As he yelled out for help, his attackers seemed to have slowed down to a crawl, and he had suddenly seen everything so clearly, so sharply. He then stood up, shakily, but even faster than he had ever dreamed....
And he ran.
Why This Character?: I wish to play Wally as an average young man, going through what all young men go through. Ranging from girl problems, attempting to find a job to support himself and his mother, and trying to realize who he really is and his purpose in life.
How is this Character Different, or Ultimate?: This Wally is not directly involved with the SpeedForce energy, another reason I wish to play as this character is that he is like the Peter Parker of Ultimate DC, having constant problems in life and no luck in the lady department.
What Can I Bring to the Table: Ideas, a good teammate attitude, and friendly personality.
The night it happened, it had been raining rather heavily, and Wally was soaked after minutes of exposure and the water glided down his leather jacket seamlessly, his dark hair hanging down the front of his face.
Yet, for some inexplicable reason, he enjoyed rainy nights.
He turned a corner of a busy street, passing by a convenience store with it's neon signs flashing in the night not really feeling the pangs of hunger yet.
Walking a little further, he passed an alleyway, but coming towards were a couple of gangbangers dressed in sweats, the water caused them to get soaked and appear to lumber towards him, so he turned around hoping they weren't actually following him.
Coming towards him from the opposing direction were three men, the one in the middle wore a wife beater and baggy, yet soaked jean shorts.
"Well shoot," Wally muttered then spoke up, "what do you guys want?" he asked, attempting to find out and negotiate some way out of the situation, but out the five thugs, nobody spoke a word. They just kept coming towards him.
So he took the only way out that he could see, and entered the alleyway at a quickened pace, not yet ready to run yet, but then the one dressed differently grabbed him by the back of the neck and pushed him against the side wall.
"What the Hell, man?!" Wally yelled after slamming against the building and almost dropping to his knees, "you want cash?!" he asked and started to reach for his wallet, but then one of the other men grabbed the hand and forced the wallet out of his back pocket.
"No cash," he said simply, with what sounded like a tinge of a russian accent, then threw the wallet down on the pavement, before kicking him in the ass knocking him down hard on his hands and knees.
"So if I don't have cash, what the hell is this about?!" he exclaimed and started to stand, standing on bended knee, when the head of the pack walked around in front of him and started to stare him down before speaking.
"You and I have a mutual friend, one you put in Iron Heights," he said simply with a crooked smile, though the shadows of the night had blurred out most of his facial features, hd let the memory of Wally's fifteen seconds of fame sink in.
Not to long ago, Wally had stopped a bank robbery by supervillains Trickster and Pied Piper, and apparently they had hired some goons for vengence. The thought had never crossed his mind that they would do something like this.
"Well shit," Wally sighed, and then the man landed a beefy right hook against Wally's wet left cheek, knocking back to all fours and he started to cough up mouth blood, he looked up at the man, the emotion showing in his was that of genuine fear, "will they take apologies, or some sort of payment plan?"
"Payment plan?" the man asked with a laugh, and behind Wally the others started to laugh as well until the leader stopped and spoke again, "you a smart ass?" he asked, then kicked him swiftly in the side, causing him to cry out in pain and clutch his side, "sure they want payment, but not the kind one can give away so easily," he chuckled and watched Wally whimper in pain.
"Please don't, I have a mom, she'd, she'd be devastated," Wally said through heavy desperate breaths, and looked up at his assaulters,
"if any of us guys had a sense of compassion , we wouldn't be here," the shadowed man jested then got down so he could grab the beaten young man by the hair and punch him square in the face, the crunch of a broken nose could be heard clearly, followed by a sharp cry of terror in the night sky, drowned by the sounds of falling rain, then as he stood up and nodded at his cronies.
Like wolves to a meal presented to them, began to beat down on the young man, his screams for mercy going unheard, most likely by the end of the night he would become a subject for the obituaries.
Then something happened as he screamed once more, the rain rushed down at it's constant pace but all five gangsters slowed down until they were hardly moving, slowly nudging him with their feet, barely bumping him with their fists. One of the cronies was going to pull out a knife.
So not taking the time to question the situation, and seeing red through his eyes as blood ran down them, he stood up shakily and started to run. Yet something even stranger happened, he was moving even faster than normal, faster than he ever thought could be possible.
He passed the convenience store in a blink of an eye, crossed the street with another blink. He looked to his left and saw a police car was waiting for the light to allow him to pass, ydt it was in the process of changing color.
Inside the police cruiser, the rear view mirror mounted speed radar device registered the young man at moving 45 miles per hour...
