A vast land filled with grazing cattle, fluffy white sheep and acres of farm lands full of fresh growing crops. Beyond the fields laid a small town, houses and shops sprouting up around the village near a large castle with a stone wall and guards at the gate. Inside the gate is where our story begins but it certainly does not end.
“Lady Alyssa, are you listening to me?” YANK. An old seamstress bickered as she yanked on a purple dress.
“No actually I wasn’t. I do apologize; my focus has not been on my gown since your assistant opened the curtains to the forest.” The crystal gaze of Princess Alyssa LaMar turned back to the window as she stared out into the darkened forest. From her father’s point of view and the understanding in which she was raised, they owned that part of the kingdom as well. But her father, the king, has forbidden anyone to enter into the forest; which was something she never truly understood. Heading tilting to one side, her blonde curls falling off her shoulder to hang freely in the air, she gazed in wonder at the forest. Had the phrase ‘curiosity killed the cat’ been thought of during her time, she would have been that cat.
Ever since Alyssa was young, she always had a urge to explore new places and learn new things. By the time she could walk she was running around the castle finding every nook and cranny she could without allowing anyone else to find her. By the time she was in her late teens, the people in the village knew her face and wouldn’t even give her a second thought until she gave them attention but from the time she was sixteen until now at twenty five, all of her efforts to get into the forest had failed. But tonight, tonight was going to be something different!!
The old woman groaned as she poked at the fabric hard enough to cause the young princess to jump, “Your mother never fussed this much with me.” The piercing gaze of the old hag dug deep into Alyssa, her mother had passed away no more than a year ago in a slaughter, her head was on a post and her body parts were thrown about the castle grounds and young Alyssa was the first to find the scattered remains of her mother. Nothing on this earth was more shell shocking and earth shaking than that moment; the moment of death. “I will have to continue this tomorrow.” The old woman said pulling off the gown off the blonde’s small curves and left her standing bare at the window.
As the old woman and the young assistant left, the blonde princess turned her gaze back towards the window as she stared out into the forest; a smirk moved across her fill lips, pulling the right corner up. Tonight was the night, as much as she’d love to see the forest during the day, it seems as though through the night was going to be her only time to escape.
Nightfall arrived and the Alyssa was dressed in a small pair of comfortable brown peasant pants, a white oversized shirt and black work boots at her feet. With her long blonde ringlets of hair pulled back into a pony tail, she really didn’t look like herself, much as a royal. Pulling open the door of the balcony she stepped out onto it taking in a deep breath. Tonight was the night, the night to go away and get away from it all and explore a place she had yet been able to venture to. The shining white smile moved across her soft pink lips as she swung her legs over the banister and began to climb down using the ivory as balance. It didn’t take long to get to the ground floor of the two story building with a small thump of her boots hitting the dirt. A dash of a mad woman took her to the front gate where she peered around to see the guards were off doing their circled walks. Smiling to herself she dashed again running straight down the road and hooking a hard left.
Her dash lessened from a run to a jog, to a walk than to a complete stop in front of the dark woods. Taking in a deep breath she plunged forward, diving into the great unknown, which would have been nicer if it wasn’t so dark. The first couple feet into the forest, the young girl had to blink a lot and hold her arms out in front of her just to find her way. After a few yards in, her eyes finally adjusted to the darkness and she began to notice things more distinct around her. A delicate look of the forest around her made her worry to touch the trees and the plants. Soft and simple yet beautiful in detail, her imagination made it into the wonder it would be in the day time.
The aw and wonder of the place around her lead her deeper and deeper into the forest, so deep she lost her footing and tumbled down a hill. A shriek left her as she rolled over and over doing down and down and down until finally landing in a cloud of dust with a sob of pain as she looked down at her leg, her leg was large, blistered and puffy, it had become sprained. The young blonde’s eyes watered as she reached down, her tan hand resting against her leg and wincing as she gave it small squeeze, it was her ankle, her ankle had become twisted and now she was stuck. Sniffling she rolled her head back and looked up at the sky, or what would be the sky if there wasn’t a foliage of trees above her. Now she was stuck, in the dark, in a forest who knows how far in, and no one knows she’s there and above all… she was injured, great. Just GREAT!
