I'm as new as can be to this website, so I'm kind of wary about starting my own roleplay. That's why, if anyone would be interested in starting something along these lines with me, to guide me along and just work together on it, that would be very awesome.
Geisha: Geisha are NOT prostitutes, which is a common misconception. They are japanese businesswomen, who are a cross between artists and entertainers. They dance, play instruments, and talk with men in teahouses, pretty much acting as the perfect party host. While the may flirt, they never marry(a married geisha is a retired one), nor do they engage in sex with their "customers".
Maiko: A maiko is a juvenile geisha, who is taken under the wing of a "older sister"(generally a older, succesful geisha) to learn the skill before they become one around the age of 20. In the earlier times, girls training to become a geisha and first a maiko would begin schooling at 4 years old, going to special schools where they learn hospitality, music, and dance.
Okiya: An okiya is like the house of a geisha. It is run usually by a retired, high geisha known as the "mother". She is the woman who takes on girls, pays for their education and training, and then takes on a portion of their income until they become independent if they choose to at all. Usually, this woman would pass on her okiya to her blood daughter- though if there isn't one, she may choose one of her better geisha instead.
Teahouse: A teahouse is pretty much a cafe, restaurant, other building/collection of rooms where geisha entertain customers. A geisha does not invite men to come over to her home(or okiya)-- she comes to a teahouse where her customers already are. By being there, the men stay longer(ordering food and drink from the okiya), and at the end of the "party" they pay for the time spent with the geisha to the teahouse, which sends the profits on to the Okiya later on.
Pretty much what I'm thinking of is a roleplay based around Gion/Kyoto, Japan, in the geisha districts- somewhere not long before WWII. If anyone has read or seen Memoirs of a Geisha, you know exactly what I'm talking about. Players could each belong to their own okiya, either being a geisha or the head of an okiya, depending on what we would decide. Everyone would start out as a maiko, and work their way up through the roleplay. The interactions between us could be just general in the story, or centered around a single, popular teahouse.
Is anyone interested?
