The basic premise is you take Earth and create your nation out of left over countries and provinces of larger countries. The amount of population you have and your tax rate determines your budget per turn (24 hours), and your initial population is determined by which territories on the world map you pick. Then you balance your budget and choose what portions go to military, economy, happiness, research, etc. and that determines what your nation becomes. You get to choose what your country researches and you can make up technologies and military assets and things as long as they are feasible for your country, appropriate for the time period, possible in real life, and most important not Godmods. Then you choose how your country interacts with others. That's the basic gist.
Because of the complicated nature of the game it is pretty much required that there be multiple moderators to govern the game. Moderators determine the outcome of battles that two countries initiate (based on troop numbers but also other things, such as tech strengths/weaknesses and a random factor), make sure everyone stays within the rules of the game and the site, play as NPC countries (if any), and devise Random Events for every game turn. These can be country specific things like "your country experiences a famine and you lose $10 million in productivity" or "the west coast of your country experiences a 6.5 magnitude earthquake and you lose 1/10 of your population" or more general world-related things like "the economy is in a slump this year so prices on everything have risen 25%" or worldwide weather patterns. In my opinion, it's what each player can come up with for their country in terms of technologies and assets they design themselves and the random events dealt by the moderators that can turn the tables very quickly that make this version of CaN fun and long lasting. If there's enough interest I'll explain all of this further and we can even vote on how certain aspects are run. I'm all for changing things to make all players happy (It says Collaborative in the title for a reason).
To keep track of everyone, I'll keep a member roster in the OP of the thread if there ends up being one, as well as a regularly updated world map. This is the first collaborative decision interested RPers can have a say in. I have two Earth maps in mind that I need help deciding on.
We also have a third option, which is to collaboratively (or if one person has a planet idea they're really itching to use) design a new planet to inhabit from scratch. That way we could make up and assign population values for territories instead of having to look them up. So, less work and more creativity when complete, more work in the process.
Also, due to the nature of the persistent world I plan to create with this game, it can easily become like the bar/tavern RPs and be always open for people to drop in and out of whenever they like. Nations rise and fall, after all.
Finally, if you haven't gathered from all the above information, this is a nitty-gritty RP. It's not a swooping story arc composed masterpiece of Internet literature, it's you running a country, with all the down-to-Earth (literally...if we use Earth as our planet that is) budgeting and rivalries and such that come with that.
