Once upon a time, and happily ever after: the two great predictables of fairy tale history. But of the middle and the after are unclear. Welcome to The Middle, the insane asylum where fairy tales turn bad and the charmed are damaged.
"Once upon a time..."
They say history repeats itself... and in the Enchanted Forest, it does. The same princesses and princes fall in love, over and over again, reach that happy ending and press reset, starting all over... replaying the same adventure over and over again. It has always been this way. It is a land of circles, of tied ribbons and of sealed fates, where time swings back and forth calmly. It's better this way; it always has been, ever since the first story was told with its own ending. With each variation, with each new retelling, a new tree formed, and from there the land would expand, creating more space for a single story to play out. No one ever passed the boundaries. No one ever knew. They lived in blissful ignorance, happy, content.
But sometimes, the story goes unfinished. Sometimes, the listeners forget and stop caring, or worse, the readers forget. It is then that the land begins to corrupt, darken and rot... and spreads, a fatal infection that none of them had ever seen coming. Now the Enchanted Forest is haunted, and the castles have seamed together to form The Middle, a desolate and miserable institute for the fairy tales gone wrong, once stuck in happily ever after, now looping over and over in dementia and insanity.
With every single fairy tale ruined, there is no order and no organization to the Enchanted Forest any longer. People wander, people go weeks without eating, but here is the cruelest card of all: there is no death. The looping of time, the immortality of story telling, now corrupted, has degenerated into a curse unavoidable.
There is only one way to overcome the curse, and it is near impossible: to find one's own happy ending... and keep it. Different stories mingle and intertwine and sometimes, history does repeat itself... and sometimes, history ends up turning inside out.
But this is The Middle. Anything can happen. It's The After that scares us the most: who knows what could come after this?
This would most likely be High Casual. It's just an idea, not completely developed or fleshed out... The basics, really. But if this is interesting to anyone, speak up! I know this is an overdone idea but it's always a fun one... And it's a lot of fun to imagine how a character could go insane, right?
I'm a little concerned about having the same characters of a story, though. There are plenty of ways to make Snow White go insane, but it may get old very fast... If you have any suggestions, please help me out.
